- No cars to drive
- Leave time: Currently we accrue 8 hours (or more depending on years of service) of leave/sick time per month. Under 12 hours, and officer loses 4 hours of leave/sick when they take a day off.
- Court time: Conceivably, an officer could be awake 16 hours or more a work day if he has court that only last 2 hours. Of course we are figuring in travel time to and from work, 1 hour each way. Humans are not built to work 16 hour days and then turn right around and report back to work. The is an outright hazard to the officer's safety.
- Manpower scheduling: The goal of 12 hours is to put more manpower on the street. If you are letting officers leave early or come in late or even giving them the day off because they have worked too many hours, then the purpose is being defeated.
- North Precinct will be the guinea pig and the decision maker. At the end of 90 days, if they like it, then the entire department goes to it. Seems like they would have chosen a precinct with a high call volume.
- And why North Precinct? When Dunwoody succeeded, the precinct was cut in half, and kept the same amount of manpower. There was no major shift of officers to other precincts. Why not Tucker of South where they stack calls up all day long?

12 Hour Shift Experiment Postponed Until January 2011
Because of "issues that need to be worked out", the experimental 12 hour shift has been postponed until January 2011. The "issues" haven't been made public, but we can only guess.

Major Idiot, uh I mean Ellison, wanted to do this when he was a captain. He presented it to an Evening Watch roll call and when the officers brought up family time and part time jobs, he just said "learn to deal with it or go without". Maj. Calhoun brought Ellison's brilliant plan to a stop after hearing the officer's complaints. Ellison loves it because as command staff, it doesn't affect him. Just another example of a stupid plan foisted on the rank and file by an unaffected somebody wanting to get noticed.
I'm sure my kids will learn to deal with it.....they'll learn to hold me in contempt for not "being there" or sleeping in on the long work weeks........my part times......they'll just hire SO...who will call PD for J2... yeah....all parties will just learn to "deal with it"
I suggest ANYONE that remains employed at this PD start looking for another job if you haven't already. Hard to believe some still remain I know but Ellis has publicly explored suggestion of city-hood for current Dekalb County to obtain more funds. Again, freeze what you have if anything at all and move on while you still can. It's coming I ASSURE you.
12-Hour shifts will not go farther than 90 days...its too harsh and constraining to do on a stressful job, especially for an officer.
Well the good thing is that command which I assume is the Chief has taken note of the great dissatisfaction of the troops and postponed the change of hours. I would be unsurprised if the 12 hour shift idea quietly disappear in a couple of months.
Chief O'Brien, we need you back to prevent this kind of crap from demoralizing the cops in the trenches. The department desperately needs vision and direction to revitalize the staff and catch more of the bad guys.
We also need our invisible DA Gwen Keyes to prosecute the criminals all the time instead of when its convenient, and the judges need to start putting these people in jail for some serious time for violent criminals.
Another thing I am noting around DeKalb is the increasing amount of policy decisions made by our managers and BOC that have major impacts on the employees only to find that our managers and elected officials and staffs are all exempt from the policies that they have enacted. When they get called out on it they offer the lamest excuses and still refuse to follow policy.
Ellis states in the first sentence of the county CEO web page at http://www.co.dekalb.ga.us/portals/ceo/index.html
"DeKalb County has continually operated as one of the more PROGRESSIVE, EFFICIENT, and ACCOUNTABLE Governments in the state of Georgia". (emphasis are mine)
Mr. Ellis where is the ACCOUNTABILITY of your office for giving large raises for your personal staff or asking for a budget increase for your office while requiring the rest of the county to make considerable budget cuts, pay cuts and employee raises went out the window a decade ago under Vernon Jones.
Where is your ACCOUNTABILITY when contracts are canceled and then are given to new contractors directly associated with your campaign manager?
Where is the fracken' EFFICIENCY in your bloated, highly paid staff of at least 15 occupying the entire upper floor of the Ponce Bldg (10-15,000 square feet. Do you call this EFFICIENT? You moved GIS out to your old offices and moved yourself in at considerable cost, approximately 35 grand to the county and the considerable disruption and loss of EFFICIENCY to the GIS department.
Security costs at the Ponce Bldg trebled while security costs at the Maloof bldg remained static because the BOC still needed security from irate county employees and citizens. And you call this EFFICIENCY?
The only word factual in your description of DeKalb government is PROGRESSIVE, an ideology known for its ideas in expanded government, high taxes, social Democracy and "Nanny state" cradle to grave social and welfare services that DeKalb provides for anyone claiming poverty status.
The rest of us are screwed.
As former chiefs and executive "LEADERS" can attest the line officer here is not impotent, quite the opposite in fact. WE have the power to get you dismissed or incarcerated as has been proven time and time again. For future reference DON'T forget it and ALWAYS be fair and put your public safety first. Don't mistake reserved demeanor for weakness or ignorance. We WILL take the despicable out as we do everyday, sooner or later.
Chief, Citizens of Dekalb, Burrell Ellis, Commissioners:
We run to the sound of gunfire. We chase after fleeing suspects at speeds that, in the unfortunate event of an accident, would be fatal.... and we "check" on suspicious people that make the man of the household cower in fear... but,
We're scared.... I'm scared.
Though I make less than $200K, my taxes are going UP in January...
The Number of furlough days is/may be increasing....
My check is decreased with each passing holiday.....
The cost of pension and health care benefits IS increasing....
Though my eval was over 3.0, my pay rate IS frozen for another year.....
Will I be able to make ends meet?
Will my part time (EXTRA job) work around my department's desire to go to 12 hours shifts?
Lots of uncertainty.
I'm scared.
A City at War With Itself: Chicago - Fast Tracking To Anarchy (Understanding the Organizational Paralysis of the CPD and the Mission to Recovery)
http://highwayroadrunner.blogspot.com/2010/07/chicago-on-fast-track-to-anarchy.html
I read this and thought that this should be added to the blog to the creater and owner of the blog. Im calling out to the Brass because I know there is one out there who has enough guts to stand up and fight just as this one officer did and actually leave his name.
That's what it takes for this department to get back on track.
If your out there its time to start fighting back. Do you have the guts! Or are you going to just sit back and let your fellow officers suffer. If know one stands up then I could only assume that everyone in the high ranks only cares about themselves.
I know one thing myself and others words cannot change the department we just get stomped on by brass and told to keep our mouth shut and work. The brass have more power than we do its time they take action for us.
Rough Tough Can't Get Enough !!!
Dedicated Motivated !!!
SEMPER FI !!!
Why not make some suggestions NOW for particular supervisors that are intelligent and honest enough to lead and speak for officers at large. The word will get to them and perhaps with known support they can implement necessary and hopefully immediate change.
I think it's safe to assume it would need to be a Sgt. Lt., or someone of a rank that is not appointed and is merit protected for obvious reasons.
Lt. Steward at East Precinct has always been one to call BS on ridiculous policy, etc. He is intelligent, articulate, but most important his own person and would be a good choice. Don't forget supervisors, this fight is for you too.
I really don’t think O’Brien cares what a sergeant or a lieutenant thinks. Well, maybe just a couple who are lucky enough to be in the inner circle. But for your suggestion to work it would have to be someone who speaks well and has some sense. It can’t be one of these crazy supervisors who should probably be in a mental ward instead of policing. Maybe there are a few candidates.
how about Lt. Reiner? He was a good sgt. he was promoted to Lt. recently..he really looked out for officers and will take a stand for whats right...any other ideas...
The bottom line is that the profession of a P.O.S.T certified officer is an honorable one and respected by any community and its leaders worth their salt. This simply isn't the case in Dekalb and never will be again in out lifetime. If you are UNFORTUNATE enough to still be working for DKPD just get out asap keeping your head high that you are a police officer and leaving for a moral community to work and live. Your career is with P.O.S.T nationwide and not with this ghetto circus called Dekalb County. Your career can be what you expect and should be, in a normal civil society, BELIEVE ME. Godspeed and good luck...
Ok can anyone name a supervisor that you would go into battle with, if so that is the one that needs to be your voice.
I see your point and I agree but I am not going to battle with Steward or Reiner. Come on man, are you guys serious? I would get killed in that battle. And did you see the earlier post about no crazy guys? Not so much Reiner on the crazy part but geezzee. Go to battle with him?
Derwin Brown would call a SOB a SOB. And I don’t mean behind closed doors. Too bad (in more ways than one) he is not still with us. Most officers, BOTH black and white, respected him and THAT is hard to find in this department these days.
The pressure is on at east. The "blitzes" are beginning to be forced since everyone is running scared after comstat meeting. The weak ones are easy to identify as the stress makes them lash out at the undeserving out of frustration and their own ineptitude. Keep up the good fight men, the pressure cooker is getting turned up haha. ...IDIOTS
Don't even bother taking a promotion exam here. Decatur has made it clear no promotions will be filled or created yet they still have unrealistic expectations of supervisors. You'd better keep up with what's going on with pending calls and radio while correcting a package that was fine but had a 7th person decide he wanted something phrased differently. Keep sweating the small stuff and the inevitable suit will take you down. This doesn't even function as controlled chaos any longer. IDIOTS...
And at east they're writing officers up for issuing citations on 41s where a more appropriate charge would have been warranted even though the one made still applies.
Can we get Dave Fraiser fired from the upstairs.
Your worthless and now that you sit upstairs you think your shit dosent stink.
Make damn sure you dot the "I"'s and cross your "T
' s boys
Hopefully current supervisors won't continue to be ass kissers and do what's right for once. You'll ultimately be rewarded if that's your goal. This current regime will collapse soon and what you do now will be remembered. I PROMISE...
Yeah there is an overabundance of "crazy" supervisors here. Seem as though they are trustworthy and honorable one moment then completely prove they don't have your best interests or back the next. When the pressure is on their true colors always show. It's obvious who stands up for their troops and defends them in their almost impossible job. We ALL know who they are.
I can think of a few damn good supervisors that I would go into battle with anyday.
Then yet I can think of several, I would do nothing more than use them as body bunkers, while I drive on and fight the good fight.
Look if you know of specific supervisors that you think or sorry, then post their names.
If you know some that are worthy and would stand tall for you well then do the same.
You know peer presure is a hell of a thing!!!
Jeez guys what the hell, is it pick on supervisor day or what???? Sure lets all post anonymously about how all supervisors suck, no matter the rank. Then we can post about how all officers suck and are either stupid or lazy. Then why don't we post names just because someone might have hurt my little boy feelings over the years.
My god, we have the possibility of a 12 hour shift coming and most of the posters here are posting childish rants about some supervisor or the evil command staff.
Do any of you ever wonder how the CEO/BOC are able to beat us at every turn? Do you ever take the time to listen to yourselves? We sound like a bunch of spoiled children throwing a temper tantrum.
Use this blog to post intelligent and thought provoking statements and you might be heard. Use this blog to post a childish rant and well......you get the idea or probably not.
Say what you want but im still not goingto write any citations, until we reach our goal.
If you still are standing tall with me then be heard.
Hey Anon at 8:56 PM,
Why don’t I just come over to your house and you can tell what I should write on this blog. Hell, you can even write it for me. And why don’t you do my taxes for me while I am there. I am sure you are better at that than all of us.
If you would take the time to actually read, you would know that nobody said that ALL supervisors suck. People have said that many supervisors suck. I tend to agree with them. If you feel differently then you should just say so. Even make a list of great supervisors in this department as you see it. You see, that is how it works on a blog. Everybody offers their opinion. People disagree sometimes.
You get to offer your opinion just like the next guy (thanks to this blog!). But what you do not get to do is tell me what I should write!
Hey Anon 5:48 thanks for making my point. If you need help with your taxes maybe we can work something out.
Slightly off topic....I'm sure glad I went to Rec Ct today on my DAY OFF and had to wait for everybody to check in until almost 1000 just to look at an insurance card and recommend a warning...yup, sure am glad...
