Joining The F.O.P. Just Got Easier

The DeKalb FOP has been highly visible fighting for our officers. This has sparked incredible interest from rank and file officers to join and participate in this noble organization. One little thing has held many officers back... dues.

The Executive Board has been working for months on different options to lessen the burden of once-per-year dues payment. You now have three options: 1) the traditional check/money order, 2) monthly bank draft (ACH), or by 3)credit card through PayPal. To take advantage of these options, just click the "Become a Member" tab to the left to get started.

The DeKalb FOP is on the move. Come aboard and get involved!

How Many Freaking Times Can They Do This?

"County staffers are developing bid proposals for outside consultants to help with restructuring departments and outsourcing some services." Can you believe this?

How many tens of thousands of dollars did the taxpayers pay for the Georgia State study? And the study before that? And the study before that?

Commissioner Boyer says "The public is not going to accept no cuts, no furloughs or no layoffs with a tax increase."

Here It Comes!

At the upcoming commission meeting June 28, 2011, the commissioners are set to vote on reducing our accrued leave time.

We can't figure out why the BOC delays putting it's meeting agendas on the county web page. but here it is for your viewing pleasure.

Remember that the commissioners don't play by the same rules as we do, so this will not effect them at all. They'll keep accruing their leave at the same rate, if they don't raise it.

We hope Mr. Jackson Jr. will be there to speak up for us along with the F.O.P. and as many officers as the room will hold.

Atlanta PD Rolls Out State-Of-The-Art Police Cars

Atlanta PD rolls out state-of-the-art police cars while we push ours to the side of the road.

Where are our new cars anyway?

What Would 1.5 Million Dollars Buy You?

At a time when we are facing massive cuts to our benefits (Item 19). the county is spending nearly 1.5 million dollars annually on cellphones, with internet access.

That's nearly $250 for each county employee a year.

Exactly who has these phones? Do you have a phone? Does the officer sitting next to you have a county cellphone? Who is benefiting from this massive phone bill? Does the cellphone provider bid on this each year?

Room for corruption? Nah, this is DeKalb County, there's no corruption in DeKalb County, right Commissioner Rader?

Why not just give each and every employee, (except Commissioner Sutton, cause shes not an employee remember, she's a commissioner) a $250 bonus each year?

A Word From Mr. Jerry Myer Jackson Jr.

"My name is Jerry Myer Jackson Jr. My Father was a City of Atlanta Police Officer from 1935-1960.

For many years I sat in Panthersville Lodge F&AM 543 with the Honorable James T. Stanley and other fine DeKalb Officers.

Is is my Pleasure and My Duty to stand for All who are being Raped and Robbed by these Elected Officials in DeKalb and Elsewhere.

This Board of Crooks gives their Staffs raises and DeKalbs Finest off days. Not to mention they cut the Budgets of DeKalb Police & Fire and then have Lush Expensive Meals catered in on BOC work days at Tax Payer expense.

This type of Corruption could not exist if we had a Caring and Responsible District Attorney. Can I say that on this page ? LOL

And Jeff Raider who thinks DeKalb Officers are overpaid what a sack he is ! This latest land deal - Park On Lavista Rd - Nothing but a Developer Pay Day ! Send this Developer his new Tax Bill of 2.1 MILLION this week and fire this a$$ hole Property Appraiser in DeKalb ! How many more Lands in Districts 1 & 2 are under appraised ?

Also let me say that I wish to Apologize to the Officer at the BOC Meeting that I raised my voice at ! Hey this Old Marine was in Combat with Master Double Dipping Crook Johnson !

The BOC does not scare me nor does Little Lord Faunteroy Ellis and I will not miss a meeting and I will be there for you Guys - The Real Heroes of DeKalb County -"

June 13 Meeting With Commissioner Elaine Boyer

This is nothing short of horrible news for all employees, especially public safety. We don't have any advise for you, but you better prepare now.

"Many thanks from the employees for this blog, you do make a difference!

Participating in the meeting were Commissioner Boyer, Bob Lundstrum, Boyer's Chief of staff (COS),Edmond, COS, Lee May. Jay, numbers guy for the BOC. Ken Choate, DeKalb retiree and two entities that prefer to remain anonymous at present.

Commissioner Boyer was gracious and genuinely glad to see us at the table for discussion. I thought the meeting was productive in several ways, both sides laid out the issues in a direct and forthright manner, valuable information exchanged, and some new players were introduced to DeKalb politics.

On the negative side. The Boyer BOC contingent was quick to emphasize that the ERCS proposal was just a proposal and not an official act, I pointed out my fear that the proposal would be dropped on the employees without warning, and I was assured the BOC would give about six months warning to the employees of the impending changes to benefits. Gee, thanks.

The BOC staff downplayed the financial increases to the employees, but as the facts were laid out, it was increasingly apparent that the goal of the proposal is to financially raise the employee contributions for the old pension plan to such a high rate (66 percent!) as to be unaffordable to the average employee, forcing the employees to migrate to the vastly cheaper “new” pension plans lower rates.

Mates, I hate to say this, but the situation is even worse than I thought. You are in deep trouble with the pension contributions and benefits and its about to go down the toilet. I thought that the tactic would be the old double up trick of proposing an increase to 66 percent and then dropping down to 50 percent, I was wrong. The whole idea is to force the employees to voluntarily leave the old pension system by making the old plan contributions so high that the employees can not afford them unless they work a second job. Your old pension will be vested to the date you sign over to the new pension plan.

This scenario could have been avoided two years ago if the BOC had reorganized and downsized the county two years ago. Instead the employees are being played as fools."

Best of luck, guys!

One Suspect Arrested In The Shooting of Officer Landers Burton

Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot Monday during an armed robbery in Stone Mountain.

DeKalb County Police Department, DeKalb County Police Department Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot Monday during an armed robbery in Stone Mountain.

Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot in the buttocks shortly before midnight Monday at the Landmark at Mountain View complex on Green Bark Circle West, according to DeKalb police Lt. L.A. Ruffin.

The suspect in custody is a 21-year-old man who was earlier identified as a person of interest, DeKalb police spokesman Mekka Parish said. His name and photo are not being released by authorities until additional eyewitness lineups are finished, Parish said. He faces charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault against a police officer.

Ruffin described the incident as an "armed robbery that elevated to a shooting when the victim tried to defend himself."

He said police were looking for two men who fled in a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Toyota Camry, after stealing the officer's wallet.

The second suspect has not been identified, and the investigation is continuing.

Burton, who has been with the department for three years, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Tuesday. He was in critical but stable condition.

Caravan Against Crime

A Caravan Against Crime will take off in the Glenwood Road corridor at 9 p.m. on July 17 to look out for criminals and deter crime.

A convoy of vehicles driven by community residents, and members of the faith and business communities will join the police on the caravan that will start at the I-285 Flea Market and end at midnight at the Christian Jubilee Full Word Baptist church, 3858 Glenwood Road.

District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson said they want to disrupt the cycle of criminal activity.

“We want to support the community and show that we are not going to tolerate the criminal activity on the streets,” Johnson said.

Now what is this going to accomplish? Waste of fossil fuel, money and manpower. Maybe Lil' Larry will wear a clown suit too.

County To Purchase Land For Five Times Its Worth

Even-though we don't always agree with Commissioner Raders politics, we used to figure him for a pretty sharp guy. Boy has he proved us wrong. It looks like he's nothing more then a cheat like the rest of them.

He is backing the county's purchase of 6 acres of land in his district for 5 times it's worth. He explains the land appraised higher by a private appraiser because a private company does a more accurate thorough job than the county.

Huh?

You mean a private company can do a better job than the government? If the county appraisers are off the mark by 500 precinct, no wonder the county is broke.

If the county appraisers are that bad at their job, then fire them! Think of the millions and millions of dollars not being paid in property taxes. This alone could pay for our furlough days, plus give us a raise.

Or could it be as simple as the whole land deal is dishonest and illegal? You would never guess that the one profiting from this deal is one of Rader's campaign contributors.

Surely this has the attention of our District Attorney. Nah.

Commissioner Sharon Sutton Keeps On Stealing Taxpayer Money

Commissioner Sutton is a disgrace. As an economics teacher in DeKalb County, she was caught, even had warrants issued for her arrest, for writing bad checks. Thus not honoring her word.

She miss manages her money so poorly, she has bills that go unpaid. Again, untrustworthy.

In the past, she over-spent her taxpayer funded budget on lavish hotel stays and meals that cost more than allowed by county per diem.

It's been found she continues to abuse and steal taxpayer money without any fear of retribution. The county commissioners should censor her at the very least. She should be removed from all committees. All her county credit cards and budget accounts should be taken away before she is placed in a corner and told to sit.

Her conduct should be questioned by the county school board, with some type of punishment. What kind of an example is she to the students she teaches?

The FOP, other officers and the general public need to demand a public apology from her at the next commissioners meeting. She needs to be called out, if for nothing else, to let her and the other commissioners know we are watching.

Her elitist attitude, during these difficult finical times must be stopped. When time comes around for the commissioner to approve our upcoming furlough days, you can bet she'll vote to dock your pay faster then you can say "super size it."

And as far as accepting a check from her? We think a money order from Quick Trip would be in order. While she's there, she can pick up a box $1.00 hotdogs to hold her over.

Eyes Wide Open

A perspective from a South Precinct crime victim, courtesy of the blog South DeKalb.

"Policing"
"A friend of mine had his home broken into recently. The police responded and we started talking about police coverage where he lives. What he told me was astonishing. He said on any given night there are four cars patrolling an area from Moreland Avenue to Wesley Chapel/Flakes Mill Rd south of I-20. Yea that’s a huge area. I was shocked that an area that is so huge would have only four cars. My first instinct was to think the officer was exaggerating, but when a second car showed up, he said the same thing without knowing what we and the previous officer had spoken about. After a little bit of searching, I found this map of the South Precinct. If these divisions represent individual beats within the precinct, then I can see how its possible for only four cars to patrol the area. But even worse is that these same areas are becoming crime-ridden but a surge in police coverage has not kept pace. It seems to me that the police are in a respond to incidents stage than proactively policing areas that are vulnerable to criminal activity".

New Uniform Shirts Go In Effect June 6

I wonder who picked this date for us to start wearing the new shirts? Is the date just a coincidence? With Yarbrough's thinking, probably not.

But we would like to thank him for the shoulder patches that are not centered and basically look like crap.

And now that gas is over $3.50 a gallon, we would also like to thank him for the added financial burden of having to have chevrons and rockers sewn on.

But we guess the guys in TAC, CID, all the aides and the motor officers don't have to worry about that do they? Seeing how they have a take home car and all. Just think, every time gas goes up, they are basically getting a raise.

As usual, uniform stepped on once again.
