I literally got a headache listening to this. I am so angry, and so sad for you, and wish I could fix it for you. It's just SO WRONG. Bless you. (and if I hear anyone complaining about response time or DKPD in any way, I promise you I'll slap the shit out of them.)

Wow, good job Wiggs. The thought of replacing retirees with new, and hopefully qualified, officers taking up to one year had slipped my mind. But, you nailed it right on the head. I appreciate what you did. It's kind of hard to get up there and say all that when the BOC already had their minds made up anyway.

So people, why are we here experiencing this mess in the first place? It is because DeKalb County over the years began taking public safety for granted and neglected to keep proactive. The intentional and negligent decline in public safety has caused decline in the school system; blight in the neighborhoods; experienced and honorable police officers to leave by the hundreds; and equipment that is outdated and dysfunctional. Now, the BOC has killed any efforts for us to really recruit anybody.

I think DeKalb is in a second coming of the Great Depression. And sadly, unless the BOC ever gets serious about public safety, this county will never again be what it once used to be. Because Jeff is right. Unless DeKalb creates a pay and benefits package that mirrors or exceeds surrounding jurisdictions, DeKalb will never again attract quality public safety personnel. And that includes adjusting the package to include the experienced and loyal officers you still have here or they will still continue to leave.

DeKalb, are you scared yet? You had better be!

I like Jeff, but he is missing one huge point here. Once all these officers retire they won't be replaced anytime soon! Those positions will be frozen. That's the way in which the County saves money people. However many officers leave will represent a reduction in the available manpower. I guarantee you those positions won't be unfrozen until 2011 at the earliest and THEN there will be the one year breaking in period. Add the early retirees in with anyone else that resigns/retires from now until next year because those spots are FROZEN. We may lose 150+ for an extended period before this is over.

Glad to see Wiggs has the guts to stand up for ALL of us, from the 3000 badge numbers all the way up to Chief O'Brien.

Wouldn't worry to much Jeff. The Early Retirement Packages started arriving today. From the looks of the numbers the county is using they should be called "Another Ripoff" packages. It's obvious the Pension Board and/or the county used lowball numbers - I rather doubt many people who were considering early retirement will take this farce.

Someone please explain something for me. Mr. Ellis was the first one behind the camera when the Rapist was caught. He is taking all these things away but wants to be in the spotlight when things are good. I hope he does not become camera shy when things go bad because of the budget he and the BOC passed. Get ready for the bad media. I also want Mr. ellis to be the first one to talk to families when an officer is killed because of his budget. Powder up Mr. CEO
