No Money For Air Conditioning

We have been told the county is trying to cut back on electric power expenses. They are now cutting off the air conditioning Friday through Sunday at headquarters. Reports are temperatures inside the building are reaching as high as 90 degrees.

The commissioners are now making us work holidays with no pay, and now they expect the people at headquarters to work in sweat shop conditions.

Are Burrell and the commissioners working in the same conditions? Somehow we doubt it. Just like they are not cutting their pay as they sit on their elitist thorne and cut the pay of the working people.

Let them eat cake!

How much more of this are we going to take? No one has the balls to say or do anything about it. Everyone is too worried about their own position in the department to stand up for everyone below them.

Work holidays with no pay? Even if the holiday fell on your off day, your pay was still cut!

Anonymous said...

First they took our sick checks at the end of the year.

Then they took our pathetically low merit raises.

Then they cut our pay 10% every time there is a holiday.

What's it going to take for someone to take a stand?

Work slow down! They want to pay us less, we should produce less!

Hahaha, this is unbelievable! this makes me sick to my stomach - how you can treat people who put their lives on the line every day for a dollar with such contempt. It hurts to even imagine being injured in the line of duty or killed while working for DKPD. For an agency that takes no pride in themselves let alone me. What a disgusting thought.
Is this the same low disciplined, budget agency that wouldn't accept my application because I informed them I decided to smoke marijuana ONE TIME? This agency is a piece of junk. I'm offended they had the nerve to tell me they wouldn't accept ME, a highly dedicated individual of integrity when they (the brass) themselves are corrupt cowards who take no pride in there work. Heck, my current mindset is they can keep their employment application; I will find a dozen agencies who would be PROUD and PRIVILEGED to have me patrolling their streets with the passion and quality a law enforcement should have!

Riddle us this.....we have a whole Police Unit (TAC Officers)tapped out to provide the CEO security at his building and its just for him.(Dont forget about the private home security for the CEO being tasked out to Tucker Prct Uniform Units) This does not include the full time Sheriffs Deputies who are his personal security and driver. Wonder if that would cover our cooling and heating bills for a year?

This is just embarrassing. Don't the commissioners realize crime still occurs on the weekends?? Victims and suspects need to be interviewed on the weekends!! I've realized the commissioners would drop their pants and actually sh*t on us if they were offered the opportunity. But how dare they make witnesses and victims sit in that building without air conditioning??

I know we as officers and detectives don't count for anything. No one gives a sh*t about us, but what about the perps?? I wonder how INTERVIEWS and CONFESSIONS will be handled in the future? You don't think a defense attorney is going to bring up the fact that our "mean" detectives forced their client to sit in a steamy, hot room for long periods of time?? How many confessions are going to be SUPPRESSED because our detectives made the perps suffer in a hot room??

Way to go, dumbasses!!

Outrageously stupid. How productive do they think people are going to BE under those conditions?? I swear these people are tarded.
Has anyone found out if boc gave up their 10% ?
I DON"T WORK FOR THE COUNTY!!

hmmm no ac.. 5th floor chock full of computers with piss poor software that generate TONS of heat.. i give it 1 weekend for the 911 computers shut down

Well, from past experience, I guess the game plan on what to do about another slap in the face is to ...............do nothing.

Optimus Prime said...

Well, somebody has to say it:

When are we going to stand up for ourselves and be heard? We keep on taking the mounds of $*#! that are being shoveled on us but nobody has the balls to say enough is enough. I propose a strike. Not a pansy "ticket strike" but a "if you don't make things better real %*&#ing quick then ain't nobody gonna get help in DeKalb" strike. Who's with me?

Anonymous said...

Its just Center Precinct and Center CID without any air. It must be 90 degrees on the ground floor. Its cooler outside than in the building.

Anonymous said...

And Cpt. AJ wonders why arrests and tickets are down.....besides the fact that the Major wants POAP's of the parks, libraries, and "high crime areas", its things like this that drive down morale and productivity.

But hey.... its only radio, CID and uniform that work weekends. The POS's at the top don't work Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Do y'all remember set off days?.....roll off weekends and you won't see your family for a year.

My first thought, this can't be true! Second thought is this is DeKalb County government! of course its true! Hopefully at least they left the air-conditioning on in the 6th floor.
George Mathews of Facility management is in charge of HVAC, and you can check with him about the the details of this. My guess is that they are just cutting back the thermostats to like 80 degrees on the weekends.
If you do talk with George find out if the 330 Ponce and Maloof buildings are being turned back also. George is a fairly reasonable guy and can probably tell you how to get the A/C problem fixed, like having your director send his director a letter justifying the need for cold A/C in the building on the weekend, example: the suspects and perps tend to get rowdier in the heat creating a safety issue to the officers. If you work this through your chain of command I know y'all can justify getting the A/C turned back on.
As for the BOC and CEO, In DeKalb government we have the Producers and the Moochers. The producers perform services to the citizens, the moochers take money from the producers so they can do more mooching. Probably 70 percent of DeKalb politicians including our judges are in the Moocher class. Our tax commissioner Claudia Lawson is not a moocher, she produces; our BOC and CEO are undeniably moochers, expanding non-productive staff, taking funds from vital services so that they can work in air-conditioned splendor behind multiple access-controlled doors and several DeKalb cops and deputies to back them up.

Expect this to get worse before its gets better mates, I don't believe the CEO or BOC are evil but they are certainly misguided.

I'm sure more than 3/4 of the people that get on here and complaint don't live in this county. Therefore, you have no power to change this Gov't, you can't vote!!! Of course you have the right to reside where ever you like, but remember the commissioners are only interested in numbers not your useless complaints!

For you non-resident employees I would suggest you get an application and join the FOP, remember the commissioners are only concerned with numbers. This is an endorsement for the FOP but their president is the ONLY person I've seen bring the issues publicly to the commissioners. Work stoppage and ticket slow down will not work because there aren't enough supporters.

Where's 46 with the "Tough Questions" now?

All this crap against the rank and file is nothing new. It has been going on in one way or another for decades. This blog just get's it all out front now. Same jerks, different names. I remember in the old building when the toilet's from the jai above CID leaked down into the CID area. It just leaked down on the detectives...not the royalty. This went on for a long time. No one in authority seemed to care. The PP wasn't dripping on them. I remember the A**s hole aide to the CID coloned gettin PO'd because we moved the desks out of line to miss the Piss. Same jackasses, different decades.Let's not get on to the promotion BS...too far back..but that was a doozie too. The good ole boy system. The fair haired boy gang. Sickening political a** kissers.Don't ever wonder why people have bad attitudes around here. It's Piss poor management.

For the record, i'm no fan of Terrell Bolton. I was one of those laughing at Vernon for hiring in 2006. However, where is the illustrious Public Safety Director and Knight in Shining Armour O'Brien. It seems like everyone was hitting back flips when he was appointed to interim chief but now it seems like things have gotten worse. I wonder if they are turning off the AC for empty county buildings on the weekends as well. I bet they have some excuses like the computers need the air and so and so Where is the police union? At least Scott Kreher, when he's not being a dumbass is up in the Atlanta City Council's face about APD conditions when warranted. Ditto for the Friends of Cobb County Police. Where is DKPD's allies?

Anonymous said...

We need a real knuckle breaker teamser type union.Oh..but that wouldn't be nice would it. How come only we have to play nice? They use our good work ethic against us while they continue to put the screws to us and I'm not just talking about AC.

Tennis Elbow Sid said...

I guess if nobody showed up for work one day, they would listen then. I guess that will never happen, but if we decide to I'm in.

Optimus Prime said...

I've got one so far? Only one? Thank you Tennis Elbow Sid, but I don't think a 2 officer strike will get much attention.

I know Bolton is part of the evil empire, but at least when he was here he was about taking care of the troops. When the A/C went out at East Pct he quickly addressed the issue by bringing in portable A/C units for us. Small things like that are important to us. Instead we got the rank and file sitting in there A/C filled offices and the guys at center are having to hold roll call outside because its cooler. Way to go!!! "Leadership from the top"

Calling all cars! said...

Bill, you have to listen to us on this. When officers are saying that Tebo is actually better than you are, then there is a real problem.
Ive known you for a long time now and would never have expected you to allow this.
When I walked into Center Precinct the other day, I actually seen a thermostat on a Captains door that read 87 degrees on it.
It is a glass building surely its going to get hot inside, but the funny thing was while I was there I took a tour.
It was only hot on the 1st and 2nd floors, everything above that was being cooled by the ac, why is it that??
Im fed up with being treated so damn shitty.
If that damn air is shut off again this upcoming weekend I will not be coming into work, it will become a sick day for me.
And I hope that every other officer does the same.
Come on Bill take a stand for us damn!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The DeKalb Commission voted to allow the Development Authority to use over $1.5 million a year for new bond payments to build over 2000 condo/apts and a hotel at the GM site.

The Development Authority is currently paying $50K a month for a "consultant" to help "plan" for the development.

That tax money should be used to help Public Safety - not pay New Broad Street to build a mega-development.

Well its Monday and still no air conditioning for Center Precinct.

I bet the fourth floor is cool and nice to work. What about it CHIEF?

Anonymous said...

I hope someone is letting all of the defense attorneys know that their clients are being subjected to interrogations in sweltering heat!

No one gives a damn about us officers, but maybe if it gets out that perps are being subjected to this kind of treatment, something will get done!

Anonymous said...

this is such bull shit weekend duty major felony not 1 but 2 homicides and we had to sweat our asses off in that building. its just not worth it when the small things are being taken away. i should borrow scott kreher's baseball bat and take it to 1300 commerce.

http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=24602

While OSHA no longer sets an inside temp requirement, they do have a recommendation which is well below 80 degrees. Maybe someone needs to see this?

Anonymous said...

The OSHA post was well intentioned, but what gave you the idea the DeKalb commissioners cared about how they treat their employees?? The way they cut our pay and tried to call it a furlough? The way they took away our sick checks? The way they took away our merit raises?

If you want to get this fixed, forget about complaining how we, the employees, are being treated. Your complaints will fall on deaf ears.

Who is going to stand up for the perps? They shouldn't have to be interrogated in hot rooms with no air conditioning! Even the terrorists in Guantanamo have air conditioning! Where's Amnesty International? Where's the international calls for shutting down the third floor of DeKalb County?

Anonymous said...

OSHA can't do anything to the county, they don't regulate government agencies for working conditions like that. Otherwise, our "Academy" would have been shut down long ago.

The interview rooms on the third floor are actually nice and chilly. If you need to cool off, get on the freight elevator and take it to the third floor and stay right there between the halls of the interview rooms. There is an AC vent in that area keeping it frosty.

Again you all make the choice to work there, You all remind me of a woman staying in a abusive marriage just for the kids, You have excuses why you stay there but if your really not happy LEAVE

Anonymous said...

To Anon at 6:43am,

It's not that simple. In case you haven't noticed, the economy sucks right now and jobs are hard to find. A lot of quality officers have been here a long time and would have to start all over at the bottom if they went to another department, which means they would take a huge pay cut. Just because the economy is bad and a lot of people can't afford to leave the department doesn't mean the county can treat us how ever they please.

Rumor has it, City of Chamblee is hiring 15 more Officers, If your record is good some Depts will hire you as a Srgnt. If you look, you just might find something or stay there and take it. If a wife knows her husband cheats, do you blame him for always cheating or blame her for being a coward?

I'm Ron Burgundy? said...

It's so damn hot... milk was a bad choice.

Anonymous said...

Chamblee is hiring 15 officers. They took all of PIB to I-285 and Savoy. The next portion the will be taking is PIB to I 285 on Ashford-Dunwoody. That means less money in taxes for the county Thus more money taken from Officers paychecks. There is money in the form of grants out there and millions in your Recorders court. Look at the new fines they have to be making up money somewhere. Why don't the BOC listen to the Officers will it take Officers getting killed before they see what they are doing? Look at Tampa how will the CEO and BOC tell the family of a slain officer that he was really working for free when he gets hurt or killed because they wanted to abuse officers by taking Holiday pay and 10% from checks. Open your eyes call your local media and have them investigate. We would not have that happen here in Cobb so why should you in DeKalb. GOOD LUCK Brothers in Blue

You need to think of the publics well being. While I do not agree with Optimus-Prime in a COMPLETE no-show; I believe a compromise is a solution. Perhaps, maybe only SWAT, Sheriffs office and a few (i mean FEW) rookie officers should show to work while all others make like N.W.A and Fight tha' Powa!!! This would get the message across as response times (which are already crap from Dekalb police officers to be frank - blame 911 if you want)would be EVEN slower and community interaction and policing quality would decrease even further. This should get a rise from the media.
Remember, first and foremost come the citizens you are sworn to protect, even if you work for a crap agency the citizens like me rely on you for all our policing needs and to keep our communities safe. Now..maybe if they give you AC and a decent car...perhaps you can kiss babies too.
Now..with that being said; I'm out to East precinct to get my ride-along papers. hrm..maybe i can convince sgt. to let me carry on this one..hehe...hehe...ahhh... good times with DKPD. I truly do enjoy riding with dekalb more than any other agency for some reason.
God bless my friends. Stay safe. Remember why you wanted this job in the first place. Focus on the good, look past the bad as best you can and be thankful you live in cities and counties far, far away from Dekalb.

ummm Public Enemy said Fight the power.. NWA said EFF the police..but I get your point..just dont show up for work with a damn clock on your neck..

Ok lets tell try and tell the truth just one time. The AC was broken not turned off. The entire building should have been demolished from the get go. But wait lets see which one of our past CEO's worked for Bell South? Oh it was Vermon oh and we cant forget Joe "The Snake" Stone, what did you say Ken Hamilton did also. Maybe some insider trading going on there.
