Officers Fatally Shoot Perp Stealing a Police Unit

We hope this turns out ok.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
DeKalb County police fatally shot a man who authorities said tried to steal a police vehicle Friday afternoon after he had been Tasered.

The unidentified man later died after being taken to a hospital, according to Channel 2 Action News.
A witness told Channel 2 the man, who the witness said looked like he had been beaten up, was wielding a knife when police were called to the scene on Wilkins Road in Decatur around 3:30 p.m.
When the man ignored officers’ commands to put the knife down, the witness said they used a Taser to subdue him.

Shortly afterward, the witness told Channel 2 shots were heard, and the officers were seen firing into their own vehicle.

An investigator told Channel 2 the man appeared to be trying to steal the police vehicle when he was shot.

Guess he won't be making that mistake again... Great job officers.

Glad the officers are okay..... for just such a reason, I always carry my PBA card... hope they had that or FOP to protect them from the department.

Strong work! Tally this year:
APD:4 DKPD:5

How are ya'll liking the private EMS services? They don't throw down like some of the old Dekalb medics I know.

I read the story and there a LOT of unanswered questions in this one.
Stay safe out there, boys and girls.

The DeKalb Medics were good, jumped on a 22 one night with me, reached for my cuffs and a medic had them about to cuff the guy. But if you worked for a private e.m.s. you would probably have no desire to do that and would get fired for helping if you did.

Hey Ken C that's the problem all the facts are not in the story. Do us a favor and don't give your worthless opinion unless you know the facts. Thanks for your cooperation

The two points addressed will be shooting at potentially moving vehicle but easily countered in that perp previously threatened public with knife and was immediate threat if not stopped. Case closed and job well done, so long as a Dekalb jury doesn't have to vote on it.

KenC,

Just because you don't know everything that happened because the only info you know came from the AJC doesn't mean there are a lot of unanswered questions. Believe it or not, there's people who know things you don't.

Hopefully video was recording. APD has 24/7 GPS and video to dispatch according to proximity etc and DKPD just now has hit or miss video which will once again allow speculation on perps family part to sue right up the chain. When will we get it together to protect our own.

To Anonymous at 9:34 am... You just chastised Ken C and asked him to "don't give your worthless opinions unless you know all the facts." I went back re-read his comment. He never offered an opinion, just an observation. The same observation you made by the way, that there was a lot of unanswered questions. What exactly was your point??? You just came off looking petty about something other than Ken's comment.
Good observation Ken!
I would love to hear the rest of the story if anyone can share it.... someone other than Anon at 9:34 though, please...

Lots of questions... leave it at that until the facts come out.

That being said, the media generally has only part of the story. Let's hope that is the case here....if not, this will not go well.

Right now, all is just speculation judgement of partial information.

Saying there are lots of questions is expressing an opinion. Just because you don't know all of the facts doesn't mean there are still many questions. Your ignorance or lack of knowledge doesn't mean the information isn't there or is unknown. You don't speak for everyone.

Hey anon 1229...

Thanks for the enlightning comment! However, we think it's important that you know;
"Ignorance" is a synonym (and not the kind you put on toast) for "lack of knowledge."
Allow me to give you an example:

"Anon 1229" is a synonym for "douchebag" (the kind that attempts to write pretentiously to make himself look smarter than he really is).

Enjoy your synonym toast...

So if the suspect is shot through the driver's window of a county unit could that not mean he was in the unit? And if in the vehicle does that not mean he was attempting to flee the scene? Refresher course boys & girls about what the employee manual says about fleeing felons....Are we allowed to shoot fleeing felons? Yes many questions need to be answered. This is why everyone that works for the county needs outside legal repression. The county is only going to lookout for the county. They will always hang the Officer out. Yes we only have a split second to make a decision. But then comes the media (tv & AJC) to tear apart the story slowly. That's when the county usually gives in to peer pressure of the media and the public and puts it all on the Officer. This way the county can not be sued. Look at how many Officers were fired years later after being cleared by IA only because the media gets involved.

A lack of knowledge about something doesn't make someone an ignorant person. You can be very smart but have a lack of knowledge about a particular topic. Synonyms have can have the same or a similar meaning. Maybe you're the one who thinks they are smarter than they are?

To 10:13 pm you hit the nail right on the head. DeKalb is famous for hanging out their public safety employees. Then only report parts of the truth to the media and then the employee is tried and convicted in the court of public / media opinion. We have seen it time and time again. Sensationalism sells stories not the truth or facts. You are right and after those employees are cleared through the legal channels no one from the county makes a public statement expressing that the employee was wrongly accused. Quick to go on the news and blame not very quick to apologize and right the wrong. This destroys the officer / medic / or firefighter's family and thanks to t he internet he or she will never be able to erase the original wrongly reported story. They should have to pay and then they wouldn't be as quick to go public with b.s. trying to look good and scapegoat the employee.

"Unconsciousness" is also a synonym for "ignorance" but they aren't exactly interchangeable now are they?

Anonymous said...

This is why most intelligent officers don't go out of their way to help those that will immediately turn on them for their own benefit. Officers take their time, serve as a mobile report taker after the fact, and pray they see a retirement age unabashed due to this ridiculous litigious society in which we live. You reap what you sow society, good luck, you're gonna need it.

Saying "there's a lot of questions about this shooting" is giving ammunition to people who would want to throw this officer under the bus. If you weren't there, you don't know what happened so it's best to keep your mouth shut and give the officer the benefit of doubt. Next time, it might be your shoot.

Ponder this, my "douchie" friend;
If ignorance is defined as a "lack of knowledge," aren't you in essence stating;

"Your "lack of knowledge" (ignorance) or your lack of knowledge yada yada...

You also use the conjunction "or" in your poorly thought out comment designed to belittle the opinion of the author as though there is a difference between a "lack of knowledge" and your attempt at impressive writing,"ignorance." It was used in the same sentence and same context.

To the person who brought up that "unconsciousness isn't interchangeable," really? Well, you wouldn't use them in the same context in the same sentence and use the conjunction "or", now would you? I don't know, maybe you would. The point is that perhaps one should think before calling someone you don't know "ignorant" so as not to look like a "douchebag" OR "bag of douche."

Have a great day or "period of light."

The difference between "ignorance" and "lack of information" was explained, so you no longer lack information. If you still don't understand, then you're ignorant.

I think some people need to re-read 17-4-20 especially section (d). I'll leave it at that.
