Dekalb Sheriff's office has approved a 15% to 20% percent pay raise in October. Sandy Springs has just approved a 20% pay increase for police officers. Last year Atlanta police received a 30 % pay increase. What will Dekalb county do to retain officers and to bring the pay and benefits for officers up to the same level as other Metro agencies?

Dekalb is the lowest-paid department with one of the worst retirement options and the highest cost for health insurance in the metro area.

Dekalb will promise the officers a pay raise and they might even get a 6 or 8 % raise and they will be told another 85 is coming soon. but as usual the second half never comes. see the commissioners do not care about the police department and they have promised them raises for over 20 years and they have even given small raises with broken promises of raises to come but the raises never came.
we have been lied to for years and taken advantage of when is someone going to tell the truth about our corrupt county.

veteran officers with 15 years plus were left out of the last pay study increase, they were told several lies about making things right but it never happeded.

if you are thinking about becoming a DeKalb police officer please do not apply here, this place is the worst place to work for and you will regret working here after 5 years I am ready to go work at Walmart aS LONG AS I CAN GET OUT OF HERE.

Dekalb county is in self-destruct mode and the C.E.O. and Chief Cardi B Ramos are the ones destroying the county and the morale.

I would take Vernon Jones and Cedrick Alexander over what we have now.

Im sure the recent authorized unlimited OT is their big plan to keep people from leaving. News flash for the new officers, OT is only short term solution seeing it doesn't effect your pension when you leave. Not because most watches cant even fill every territory but they think thats what we want. There is no doubt anyone above LT doesn't care if a watch puts out 4 or 15 officers on a shift seeing the average is 6-7. LEAVE WHEN AND IF YOU CAN

Dekalb Commissioner's, CEO nor Chief cares about the officers! If you can get out leave! All they care about are food and vaccination drives. That money could be paying officers.

There's a rumored 22% increase. 10% this year 12% next year for PO1 through MPO. But I wouldn't hold your breath. They'd need a 22% across the board for everyone this year to stem the hemorrhaging. On top of this you'd see tons of SGTs and LTs switching to DKSO if their officers are making more money then them.

Dekalb county is losing officers by the dozens, we are at a critical level for the officers in DEKALB. Yet the CEO, Commissioners, director, and the chief will not face the truth and have their heads in the sand. Dekalb offers the worst benefits package in the metro area, we pay more for our insurance than any other agency within 100 miles of the metro area. The retirement for new officers is the worst in the state and the pay is 27% lower than other metro agencies. Yet Dekalb county has the highest crime rate and the largest call volume of any other agency.
Its really simple if you pay your officers and give them a better benefits package and not treat them like garbage they will work harder and they will stay with the department longer.

I have been here 25 years and I have not reached top out pay yet, as for a two-stage raise don't believe anything ell you, we have been lied to in the past on three separate occasions and told we would receive a two-part raise. we never see the second part of the raises the commissioners always table the second part and tell us the funds are not available. see we have laid down and accepted being lied to over the years and they know they can get away with telling us we will get a two-part raise and they never give it to us. we can't be mad at them because we have shown them we will accept the lies and do nothing about it. we can only blame ourselves for not fighting for what we were owed years ago.

Anonymous said...

sounds like a disgruntled 25-year veteran does not appreciate a raise.

Anonymous said...

no, I will take any raise they give me because they owe me that. and for being disgruntled, no I am not disgruntled I am disappointed. if I were disgruntled I would not come in and do my job the best I can do, I would not want to help our department. but I am tired of being lied to and tired of being treated like a dog by the command staff.

Anonymous said...

if you officers believe you will ever see the second part of a raise you are fools, and if you believe that I have some oceanfront property on candler rd for sale at a good price.

Anonymous said...

please do not fall for the lies from the CEO you will never see a two-part raise and please do not come to work here this department is where all hopes and dreams and souls go to die.

worst pay, worst retirement, worst insurance , worst working conditions.

the CEO, commissioners, and the Chief Cardi-B does not care about your workload or your pay and benefits. Cardi-B is the reason most officers are leaving the department, she tells them to go if they don't like what she is doing. well guess what Ramos they are going and now you have so few officers that officer safety is critical at this point. but we all know you don't care. that is why we are leaving.

Anonymous said...

the commissioners know they can lie and give you a small raise and you will stay and never ask for anything or the second raise. they do not care about public safety and they know we will not fight back.

Department is the baby
Ramos is the father
CEO is the mother

Ramos is the reason so many officers have left, along with the commissioners raising the cost of insurance and the crappy retirement the county has to offer. This CEO will be known for the downfall of Dekalb county. He is the one who allowed the new pension and the high cost of insurance and the one who hired Cardi B Ramos.

Anonymous said...

Chief Ramos said publicly that she had done all she could for Dekalb and wanted a job in Texas, but they realized she was an Idiot, now Thurmond just lets her stay and ruin the department more. where the hell is the public safety Director what does he really do? Ramos just goes around him and goes to the CEO for whatever she wants, think he is here to just collect a check he does not really do anything at all.

The officers who have been here 15 plus years are the officers who are keeping this department going, yet those are the same officers that get shafted on the raises and get all the crappy details. we have veteran officers and veteran detectives driving the worst vehicles in the county and we ask them to do more with less. look at how they treat the veterans and do not give this place your soul get out while you can.

Anonymous said...

Homicides, Rapes, Assaults, Burglaries Auto thefts, and fatalities are all at record numbers this year. these CID units are working as hard as they can and yet they are treated the worst. they are questioned and degraded on how they work cases and if someone complains about a case the commands staff does whatever the so-called victim or perp wants without consulting the detective much less the law that applies. instead of working our cases and giving us the tools we need to do our job we are pulled for uniform assistance and special weekend details.

Anonymous said...

to the last post, I understand you have a caseload but the uniform is so short-handed they can't cover all the territories in a precinct. officer safety is nonexistent. we have to have officers work over just to put 8 to 10 officers on the road. we are all short-handed and overworked, I am surprised more officers are not using EAP because of the stress from the workload and the treatment of the command staff.

Anonymous said...

if I am injured or killed on duty please be sure my family gets a copy of the watch list or my assignment so they can sue this county for lack of backup and for always putting officers in a dangerous situation.

Anonymous said...

all the new vehicles are going to uniform officers, none will go to CID or SOD yet they are the units that respond to all critical incidents.

Anonymous said...

if you have under 10 years here you need to leave and go to a department that will appreciate your dedication and hard work. we have been lied to for years and things have never changed they have only gotten worse here. the two-part raise is a lie and a scam to just keep officers here, they know they can dangle a carrot in front of you and you will fall for the trick.

Anonymous said...

I will gladly trade you, Lt. White, for Albritton, my luck Albritton gets promoted and comes to the same precinct as White then the whole precinct is screwed.

Anonymous said...

Ramos will not leave she has nowhere to go now, after her comments and now that most of any reputable agency looks into her they will not take her. we are stuck with her until Thurmond leaves.

Anonymous said...

I don't doubt it is bad there, but look at some of the smaller agencies in Dekalb. Stone Mountain, Avondale, Clarkston, Lithonia. Most of them are at critical staffing levels also. They can't keep anybody either...

Anonymous said...

we will not get a decent raise if one at all, lets think about this the CEO called the media and sent out emails county-wide about a SIGNIFICANT pay raise last time, and anyone who was post-certified received a massive 4% raise. so if this is his idea of a significant raise we will never be paid on an equal scale to the metro area departments.

I have been here for 6 years now and I regret wasting my first six years in a department that treats the officers so badly. I understand why the veteran officers are so unhappy and why they hate coming to work. I have enjoyed the friendships I have made and the experience is invaluable, but I can't work for a department that has no future and one that does not appreciate any officer at any rank and treats veteran officers so poorly. one day I will be a veteran officer and I do not want to regret my career so I will be leaving for a better department soon.

anyone with common sense should leave and tell everyone they know does not work for Dekalb county it is a corrupt and unethical place to work.

I left DKPD over 7yrs ago and other than my first year at my current department and the Covid Pandemic for 2020, I’ve been making 6 figure police salary at an agency not so far from Dekalb. Actually it operates in Dekalb County as well. BEST DECISION EVER! I’m just here to laugh at all the officers who are still here and afraid of change but are crying about how they hate this place. JUST LEAVE!

This County treats it's Police like animals. They talk down to you, try to write you up, suspend or terminate you. You cannot take a day off (because of man power). We do not acknowledge you have life outside of the county shame on you. Also remember 700 Sworn Officers maybe 8 years ago. According to some politicians, murder increase is because of CoVid. People are hungry. Jail and Judges kept releasing folks back on streets. More people are doing drugs, alcohol, depressed and do not want to work. I say close the Police Department Down let the Sheriff's Department hump calls and investigate instead turning arrestees away from entering the jail.

Chamblee got a 15% raise last month, a merit raise this month, plus another coming Jan 1. Go work somewhere where the citizens and council support law enforcement.

The employee manual used to be less than 50 pages. The latest update is a 51 page dress code. We used to have class a and class b uniforms. Now we have class a b c d e f g h I j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x and y.

Vaccination and food drives are all they’re concerned with. Please stop with these Covid surveys, either demand we get the vaccination or FIRE us! Nosey bastards!

Does anyone know if the department signed us up for the thousand dollar bonus from the state?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if the S.O. ever implemented those raises ? I heard that despite what the email says, there has been no county approval for a mid-year budget adjustment for the S.O. and no raises are forthcoming. Can anyone confirm one way or another ?

Back in the 90's we walked the sidewalks, had t-shirts printed, billboards, etc. It got a lot of attention and traction. It was never repeated even though we went through the same shit over and over. no raise, minimal raise, we need to do a study that lasts 3 years and then still not do anything, point the finger at the CEO, CEO point the finger at the commissioners, a raise if you've been here this many years, blah blah blah. It's all a big game to pacify you all and kick the can down the road - and you all take it, which is why they keep doing it, over and over. I've always said the problem is that you guys are not organized. Get your asses together, walk a picket line in front of the Maloof bldg, get a non-police spokesman (or an untouchable officer, you know who he/she is), talk to the media, get the citizens on your side, show the real stats - the one's they dont want the citizenry to know about, and put your situation on the street and in the media. They will only pay attention to that. Something about a squeaky wheel. Be respectful, state the facts and play within the rules of policy and there is nothing that can be done. In fact, the "leaders" will quietly support you. No, they won't get out there and march with you - this is something you must do. Quit pointing the finger at someone else to do your bidding. All the best - a retiree

How is Collins still employed here? I heard he failed two drug t sta but has had zero consequences. Guess he's got his old Homicide buddies making things "disappear" for him. SMH.

It’s probably to late to salvage the retention rate with a “sure to be”,paltry offer. Lack of upper management leadership, benefits, pay is the kiss of death for any professional organization. Most importantly, public safety. Loyality is a thing of the past. Do what is fight for yourself, and especially your family. Best wishes, and luck to all.
