Over the past week, Gwinnett County Police Department was heavily advertising a job fair on various radio stations in the metro area. They were boasting of their state of the art police academy, a driving track and, not 1, but 3 in-door firing ranges. Oh, and they have take home cars……for everyone.
Well, they have nothing on DeKalb County Police. We have an academy that is a converted school built probably in the ‘60’s. We have an OUTDOOR firing range, but just one, who needs 3? Driving track? We have I-285. And where we really leave Gwinnett in the dust: We have 6 RV’s. They have none! Oh, and we don’t have take home cars (unless you are ICP)
We win!

You forgot to add that Dekalb Officers have a lot less job related stress.
With all those ranges, I'll bet the officers in Gwinnett have a hard time sleeping at night when they don't go to the range to practice. The expectations must be pretty high.
I sleep a lot better knowing the standards have dropped in Dekalb.
I've slept like a baby each and every night, since they dropped the number of practice rounds from50 week to 50 every two weeks AND limited us to one range at the extreme southern edge of the county. Bet the officers from Tucker, Center and North hit the range all the time.
I gotta tell ya I have been to Gwinnett's indoor range. You wanna talk about nice? Its unbelievable. They havea 25yd, 50yd, and 100yd range all in door. They have blue lights so you can practice in low light conditions. They are big enough that you can drive vehicles inside the range so you can run scenarios, and they have funky contraptions that roll over and pick up the brass. For $30 million its a nice place aaaand I didn't even see the track.
WE USE TO HAVE AN INDOOR RANGE, BUT I THINK SOMETHING ABOUT ASBESTOS IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR LUNGS. OH YEA WE HAD A BLUE LIGHT FROM 1973 UP IN THERE TOO, IT WAS THE BOMB... AND THE BARRICADES AT THE "NEW" RANGE...."STACK YOUR OLD OIL BARRELS"....CAUSE WE ALL KNOW HOW MANY OIL BARRELS WE RUN INTO ON THE STREET. I BET DUNWOODY PD WILL HAVE A INDOOR RANGE INSIDE OF THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY WITH 25 STALLS SO ALL 25 OFFICERS CAN PRACTICE AT THE SAME TIME!DEKALB IS THE PLACE TO BE IN GHETTO ENFORCEMENT!
PS. TOM WHITTINGTON FOR CEO!
In the late 70's and early 80's DeKalb Police had a strong leadership and progressive thinking individuals. The county was one of the first with MDT's and going to 9mm semi-auto handguns. Everyone hears stories about how we used to be one of the top 10 departments in the country. Unfortunetly since that time the police department needs have not been addressed by its leadership, politicians, and citizens. Sadly our training facilities, equipment, and buildings are all in need of replacing or significant repair. No one wants to address it and no one wants to pay for it. Approximatley 12 years ago we had to pay for the "new" CID area in the OLD jail with seized funds, unbelievable don't you think? The supposed new headquarters looks good from the outside until you realize the failure of the interior design. I won't even mention all the nice old equipment brought in for the 3rd floor and below or the nice camera system that doesn't work and elevators that always break down. Atleast the 4th or 5th floor where taken care of, coincidence??? Tucker precinct was the last purpose built precinct and it had to be partially donated by the Cofer family, everything else has been a hand me down or worse. Obviously the citizens of Gwinnett feel differently about the importance of public safety and have made it a priority.
