Dunwoody doesn't sound all that great. It looks like career advancement will be very difficult and 5/2 makes it even less appealing.
I hate DeKalb, but if the politics here are bad, can you imagine what it will be like there.
I'm still in disbelief that the politics of Vernon Jones and some of the BOC members has caused this Dunwoody situation. Who can blame the citizens when there has been such gross mismanagment? The county overpays $20 million in contracts and no ones raises an eyebrow? Is there one major purchase in the last 8 years that even works as advertised? Where are all the watchdog groups and why isn't the media holding these politicians accountable? Will DeKalb ever recover from the last 8 years?
REALLY? A 5/2 work week with 16 Patrolmen? Thats going to street a max of 3 units per shift. Someone better rethink that. Chamblee and Doraville are much smaller than the proposed Dunwoody area and we street 7 and 8 cars a shift. Give this a little thought guys. People are voting to be part of a City to get better service and trust me they expect it!
I don't see how Dunwoody PD is going to man three shifts/24 hrs day with only 16 patrol officers. It won't work.
FROM MY UNDERSTANDING I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE WILL BE 5 OFFICERS PER SHIFT WITH ONE SUPERVISOR BUT YES I AGREE WITH ALL OF YOU...THE MATH DOESNT WORK OUT WITH ONLY 16 PATROLMAN. I WILL FIND OUT MORE FOR EVERYONE BUT THE 5/2,TAKE HOME VEHICLES AND SALARY ARE FOR SURE.
16 Patrolmen? I'll admit I'm not familiar with the physical borders of the proposed city, but that sure sounds small. If I'm not mistaken, Sandy Springs has over a hundred officers.
I really figured they'd take most of North precinct. I know north has more than 16 patrolmen. If this is true, you can pull my name out of the hat.
Guess I'll have to just pray the next CEO will do something to make things better. Johns Creek has ugly patrol cars, but in light of this they look a heck of a lot better.
From Anonymous in response to Dunwoody.
This has been the problem with the City of Dunwoody...the math just doesn't add up.
Citizens think they will reduce their taxes, get more services and acquire property that the citizens of DKC paid for.
It doesn't add up. That is the reason Rep. Chambers and other members of the DeKalb House delegation voted against the cityhood.
Please be thoughtful casting your ballots this July.
I would think patrolmen that are long-termers will not find Dunwoody a great prospect - too small and no "action." As for the vote, the entire Dunwoody case seems to boil down to having the citizens "feel" like they have more control. Not a good deal in my opinion. But then again, my feelings are not so easily swayed ...
From the Citizens for Dunwoody website, although this plan for the D'wood PD is not writ in stone, their numbers are what everyone has been working with -- I don't know who "Inside Man" is and where he got his numbers -- that's the way it works with being anonymous on the internet and writing your "scoops" in all-caps, folks may not believe you. See if these #s make more sense:
POLICE
17.How greatly improved would the response be with a city of Dunwoody?
Initially, a city of Dunwoody would plan to increase the number of officers from 28 to 35, an increase of 20 percent, which would increase the number of patrols and dramatically improve response time to citizen calls. Creating a city police force would also avoid the current situation where officers are called to deal with crime outside of Dunwoody leaving residents with a smaller police presence as officers assigned to Dunwoody respond to incidents in other parts of the county.
from: http://www.citizensfordunwoody.org/faq.htm
SO STEVE...WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS THAT MAKE MORE SENSE? ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE 20% INCREASE IN OFFICERS WHICH EQUALS TO 7 OFFICERS FOR A TOTAL OF 35? ONCE AGAIN TO ATTRACT MORE QUALIFIED OFFICERS....HOW ABOUT STARTING THE OFFICERS AT $50,000 INSTEAD OF $42,000 AND CHANGING THE WORK WEEK FROM A 5/2 TO A 4/3 OR A 4/4! ANYWAYS 35 OFFICERS IS NOTHING...SANDY SPRINGS STARTED OFF WITH 80+ AND GOOD GOD LOOK AT DORAVILLE WITH 100+ OFFICERS!! OH AND STEVE IM GETTING THE INFORMATION FROM SOMEONE ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FENCE!I LOVE MY CAPS LOCK IT SETS ME ASIDE FROM THE REST. WHO AM I?? I AM A 9 YEAR VETERAN WITH DEKALB POLICE WHO IS FED UP WITH THE PLACE.JUST LIKE "GADGET" YOU PROBABLY WILL NOT POST AGAIN.
PS-TOM WHITTINGTON FOR CEO
I'm guessing alot of the proposed manpower numbers are coming from what the county currently provides. Historically, Dunwoody has only had 3-5 beat cars during a shift. The biggest drain on manpower will be the mall and it's surrounding businesses. People have made careers out of being slugs in the 20's and 30's. I know because I had to work next to some of them. That's why Whittington patrolled up there for so long :) So the 16 officers comes from having 3 shifts of 5 officers with 3 working and 2 off on any given day. They could also augment their manpower with auxillary officers keeping their POST certification up as Clarkston and others do. Honestly I don't see a problem with the starting salary for the work that will be required. Also remember the take home car should be looked at as a 5-8k yearly benefit. The bigger questions for many will be what their leadership will be like and what type of retirement/401k they will have. Obviously if you're looking for upward mobility small town departments are not for you, whether it be Dunwoody or anywhere else. Not trying to pick a fight with you insideman, but no way in hades does Dunwoody need 80 or 100 officers, their crime stats just won't support that and if you're so fed up as you state why aren't you at one of the departments you listed? With only 9 years service you have a lifetime of misery left with the county.
