I'd vote for the restrictive policy.

Over half our officers don't fully comprehend the decision to chase and its ramifications. I trust them with my life, but when it comes to chases they don't make the right decisions. They don't know when or just won't call off a chase.

That being said, we need more training and more equipment. We need to be trained to PIT fleeing cars and we need stop sticks and PIT bumpers on the patrol cars. Stop the chase when it first starts!

That all costs money, so I don't see any changes in the near future.

It take gut's for a supervisor to call off a chase but that is his / her job no matter what the troops think. Sergeants should take the lead and not leave it up to a higher rank to call it off...better yet the officer should know when it's too dangerous for the public and call one off. In a rare case I've herad a "peer leader" veteran officer jump in a call one....made the sergeant look like a slacker. It's not worth killing an inocent citizen over a stolen car or similar violation...or anything for that matter.Good supervisors are the backbone of the department.

It looks like Charlotte has a real police chief unlike DeKalb County. The Charlotte chief is interested in combating crime and maintaining order. Bolton is nowhere to be found and could care less about combating crime. Mr. Ellis...please hire the chief from Charlotte...he is a cops cop and that is what we need in DeKalb County.
