BOLTON: “My heart is here and I want to be here and I’m going to be here.” He also said, “If anybody is mistaken about that, they better go read the law [providing civil service-style protection to the police chief]. … I would not have taken [the job] had it not been merit protected.”
Ok, we'll say it: Bolton lies! He is not merit protected.
How soon he forgets:

The only person Chief Bolton has helped was himself and his friends.
If Bolton's heart is here and he "wants to be here"....
Why is it that he works "out of town"?
Why does his family live in Texas?
Why is his primary residence in Texas?
Why does he have to go somewhere to "visit" his family?
Most people who interview for and accept a job out of town, pick up and relocated to the city where their job is located.
Is he afraid of the rising crime rate?
Is this a temporary stepping stone used to revive his failed career?
By the way, I watched the story on Fox 5 news.... Was that a County Tahoe or Expedition parked in his driveway?
According to DeKalb County Code he is merit protected.
Please cite the code section.
"According to DeKalb County Code he is merit protected."
I can't find it and would like to get a better understanding.
Sec. 1052. Authority of board of commissioners to establish merit system.
(a) There is hereby authorized to be created and established by the governing authority of DeKalb County a merit system of personnel administration, to be known as the DeKalb County Merit System. The said governing authority shall be authorized to create such merit system by appropriate resolution, which resolution shall specify the department, personnel and officers of the county government covered by said system and the effective date of said system.
(b) All employees of DeKalb County may be placed under said merit system except: All elected officials; all deputies of the sheriff and tax commissioner; the marshal, clerk, and deputy clerks and deputy marshals of the state court of DeKalb County; the assistant solicitors-general; county attorney, assistant county attorneys; all deputies of the clerk of superior court; the court reporters for the superior court, and state court of DeKalb County; and the sheriff of DeKalb County.
(c) The governing authority of DeKalb County shall not discriminate between employees under the merit system and employees not under the merit system in the granting of merit salary increases.
(d) The chief of the DeKalb County police department shall be under the DeKalb County merit system.
(Acts 1956, p. 3111, § 1; Acts 1968, p. 2047, § 1; Acts 1970, p. 3499, § 1; Ord. No. 84-00, § I, 8-8-00)
We all have Merit System protection. People get fired everyday with that protection. What makes this idiot think he cant get fired. Just stand by TEE BO
Thanks for posting the Code! A real bummer that the chief is specifically mentioned as being under the system.
I guess the lawyers will have something to fight about.
If they do decide to remove him, my guess is he'll make a big public show then privately explain that it will be cheaper to pay him a kings ransom to leave somewhat quietly.
Time will tell.
Always remember: The Board Giveth, The Board Taketh Away. Maybe it's time with this "New Day" about to roll in for DeKalb, that this merit-protected writing be re-written. Like, out with the old, in with the new. Wouldn't be the first time the BOC decided to rewrite county policies and codes.
