Here are a few questions we received from a poster, and they are valid questions:

  • Why has DeKalb Officers Speak had nothing to say about the biggest rumor going around the police department? You seem to know about everything else going on but have not mentioned Wiz Miller and John Pearson coming back to run the place. Could it be that’s your click and your going to finally get your whining self promoted? Whew there is plenty to talk about with those two so let’s get it rolling.

We here at DeKalb Officers Speak try very hard to be as accurate as possible before we post news or editorialize. So far we are pretty proud of our record of accuracy. Not to mention TeBo “uninvited” all captains to the Compstat meetings.

No, we are not part of any “click” and really don’t care about promotions. But we do want the most qualified persons promoted and appointed, and so far Bolton has failed miserably.

As for the rumors of John Pearson and Wiz Miller: Yes we have heard the same rumors and more. The rumors are; they are coming back as Director and Chief, in no particular order. But as of now, that is all they are; rumors.

Would they be good for the department? John Pearson would not be good for the department. He is the most humiliating and degrading person walking on this earth. He has a questionable background involving domestic violence. We could go on and on about him but we won’t. We all know the type of person he is.

Wiz Miller: Wiz is a nice guy and he stood up to Flemister and Graham which probably cost him his job here. He does have a law degree. But what makes him anymore qualified than the next guy?

We don’t need anymore “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”, which these two will bring. We are hoping Ellis will search nationwide for the most qualified people before he appoints anyone. This shouldn’t be too hard, we’e sure the list that Vernon ignored is still laying around somewhere. Botlon was not on that list, he was on the list of people NOT to hire.

So to sum it up: Pearson would be a disaster for this place on the heels of TeBo. Morale is at an all time low because of TeBo’s promotions and wasteful spending, and officers without health insurance. Pearson would be a death blow. Wiz Miller: Ellis probably can do better.

Slamin Ethel agrees: Pearson never did me wrong in any way. Although while I did work for him I did witness his behavior towards other officers.
They were no more than fear tactics to force them into his way of thinking.
He spoke to officers like they were children instead of someone who had to wear a gun just to go to work.
Terrible choice Mr Ellis, and yea I agree and commend Wiz for standing up to Flim Flam and Graham. You have our support for that but we need someone with more experience in law enforcement, my choice would be someone with years of experience and only one person comes to mind around here. LT TOM WHITTINGTON has made his life at this department, it is the only job the man has ever had and started here at the age of 17 as a radio operator. He has been here over 36 years, and guess what he is still younger than any other chief we have ever had. I cant think of someone with more experience and heck he can come from within the department.
But I don't expect he will ever go beyond where he is, but to put other lame ducks above him is a travesty such as but not limited to, Horner (idiot), Waddelton (idiot), Eunice (idiot), Ramey (idiot, incompetent, sell out),and so on.

You know .. when you have a dirty house.. sometimes it makes more sense to go OUTSIDE of the house for a fresh start. And no.. this isn' what happened last time.. Having TD Jakes get Eddie Long to give his boy a job doesn't count as an honest hiring procedure...

Hey John if you are tired of reading these comments then just stay off of this web site. Horner and the rest of the upper command staff are idiots and if you think they, “earned” their promotions then you are also an idiot. Horner is a professional ass kisser. Give me an example of outstanding leadership shown by Waddelton or Horner. Bolton has not promoted anybody because they earned it. He doesn’t even understand the concept. He has and will only promote people who share his low morals or people who Vernon told him to promote. That is it. Everything else is a LIE.
John Pearson can be a hard nose jack ass. I think there can be little denying that. He certainly could use a few classes on people skills. BUT at least he says what he has to say to your face unlike these cowards we currently call a command staff. Pearson also has a very good understanding of real police work. Maybe he has mellowed out some in the last year but I don’t know that to be a fact. The domestic matter is completely overblown.
As for Miller, let’s start with the fact that it is W. Z. Miller and not Wiz Miller. Those are his initials. His mother did not name him Wiz for crying out loud. I think he would be an outstanding choice for chief. He is very smart, he is well educated, he has a backbone and he cares about his officers. How many police chiefs in this country have a law degree and are former assistant district attorneys in their own jurisdiction? Damn few I promise you! I am tired of outside people. I want someone who knows DeKalb County!

FYI: It's "clique", not "click".

And Pearson is a bully who has no business even being mentioned for the chief job.

Why is it that pissed off Officers can write a good blog post detailing what's wrong in the Department but, can't write a detailed report narrative to save their life.

Wow are you really ready to hand J. Pearson the keys to the kingdom. Lacks people skills?? No kidding. The man has had to be transferred at darn near every superior officer position because of those great people skills of his. If I remember correctly he was once shipped off to Code Enforcement. Some one has always been over him to control and contain him. Trust me, if he is made chief we will NOT be better off. J Pearson is simply not respectful of others and suffers from a severe "bully" syndrome. This department desperately craves leadership, integrity, and respect. Does that honestly describe him? God help us! Also lest we forget, it was J. Pearson that gave his "you're not part of the team" speech to one W.Z Miller and probably Chief Ector too while working for Chief Bolton. How's that for a "stand-up", "tell it like it is", kind of guy? My what short memories some of you have!!!!

I feel that former Chief now ADA Miller would be an excellent choice for Public Safety Director. In fact, I am thrilled at the possibility of having an intelligent, articulate, educated individual leading our department. Furthermore, he understands the law from the job of the street cop all the way through that of the prosecutor, and that's an incredibly valuable perspective to have.

Morale-wise, I wouldn't assume that all officers want some other person combed in from a nation-wide search. That person would still be a stranger, with a limited understanding of the people and places in our county. After Chief Bolton, there's a lot of mistrust in that.

I do agree with the assessment of Chief Pearson. I will praise him for his ability to get things done and a pragmatic, no-nonsense attitude. He's smart. But he is a Bully, plain and simple. I don't trust him not to abuse such a position by using it to revive old grudges and get even with people who he perceives to have wronged him in the past. I see serious potential for abuse of power in such a chief, simply because he can.

"I feel that former Chief now ADA Miller would be an excellent choice for Public Safety Director".

Who is this ?

I am a DeKalb Officer, like many of the other people who post here. My badge is silver, not gold. I have no personal connection to Miller, if that is what you are asking.

Of course, you may not believe that, and I would certainly understand the skepticism. But I have no real way to "prove" my identity, absent posting it, which I don't intend to do.

My badge is also silver. The silence from Decatur is deafening. I'm losing hope and fear we will finish our careers doing follow up after the crime.

I guess someone has to do the report and go through the motions. The victim has to have something to give the insurance company.

Its too bad this department has sunken down to an avenue towards pension. I had hoped to do more as a police officer and detective.

Let's all hope and pray that Pearson is just a rumor. If not a rumor and he does become Chief you can bet your bottom dollar that Dale Holmes will jump back up in the ranks like he did when Graham and Flemister were in charge. You can also get ready to count the number of cars Pearson will have assigned to him. Not the cars assigned to his staff but to "him". When he was there under Marinelli he had a Crown Vic, Explorer and a Jaguar. Yeah you heard right. He found out that Narcotics has seized a Jag and he made the call and said to bring it to headquarters. The Jag was parked under the sallyport in one of Pearson's old parking spots. And it wasn't driven by anyone except him. Who cares about car shortage or a undercover car for narcotics, "I'm J. Pearson and I need the Jag to style in.I feel for you men and women at DKPD. If you didn't leave under the "Tebo regime" you probably will if Pearson get's in. Or you will give it mighty serious thought. God bless each and every one of you officers who come in each day and do your job. As for all the "Tebo butt kissers", may you reap what you sow. As for the new Director. I say bring "Wiz" on and I hope he stays the same as he was when he was an officer before. I never heard of Wiz doing anyone wrong and he looked out for his people and himself.

A retiree's comment: Very glad I am not there to see first-hand how things have gone down so badly during the tenure of Vernon Jones; it is bad enough hearing about things from friends and the news. One can only hope that the situation will get better with the new administration.

As for Tom Whittington being Chief, why on Earth would he want the grief of THAT job so close to his retirement? Trust me, he is much better off riding out the time he has and then getting the H out of there while there is still a pension fund.

John Pearson is a very intelligent man and has many abilities, but unifying a fractured police department would not be one of his stronger selling points. Enough said.

W.Z. Miller is intelligent, much more modest and accomplished than J. Pearson, and has a better grasp of "downtown" politics than Pearson or Whittington and, like Whittington, he is to be commended for his long and devoted service to the department and the county. But I wouldn't want him to be Chief - for his own sake! (See above.)

As much as it may gall some of you, perhaps the best candidate for the job of Chief would be someone from another jurisdiction close enough to DeKalb to be familiar with "the lay of the land" but not so close as to be embroiled with the current cliques.

... and my candidate for DOPS? Almost all other jurisdiction nationwide that used to have a DOPS got rid of the position.

By the way - when W.Z. Miller worked for me, many of us (of all ranks) called him "Whiz" as a compliment to his intelligence and fortitude. He never mentioned that he didn't care for it. If he did object, I hope he accepts my belated apology.

Be safe out there...

What happened to putting people in the command ranks that have actually accomplished something like long time, accomplished Robbery - Hommicide person with a stint in IA. No one should be in high command without having Internal Affairs xperience.Learned that at the FBI academy.Too many prety boys have already been in charge here. How about a real hard nosed police vet that knows the in's and out's of police work and administration. Is there even such a person left?

O.k anonymous,You are really showing your ignorance, prejudice, and your grasp for straws. You call yourself a law enforcement officer and I bet you can't give not one thread of proof that T.D Jakes or Eddie Long had anything at all to do with the hiring of T Bo which I know for a fact they didn't nor were they consulted. The fact of the matter is this was Vernon with the help of the new Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson aka Former SAC of the ATL field office of the FBI who got on TV and stated that T Bo was the greatest thing since sliced bread. If your going to throw two great men under the bus at least have the balls to give your evidence to support it, otherwise go back on patrol and spend the rest of your careers as a MPO or Sgt which is probably as far as you will ever go spreading lies like that.

lets take a poll... how many of us are on the border of leaving this place, and the only thing keeping us here is because we know change in the the near future. Umm yea ok, lets bring in pearson, I assure you the people who are at the fence and ready to leave will be gone! The next chief has to be an outsider without a doubt. Maybe if this was a department of 50-100 you just promote within, but not with a department of this size!
