Barely a week has passed and again David Simpson of the AJC authored an article in the AJC falsely declaring crime is down in DeKalb County. Click Here This after we posted the yearly stats calling into question his first article. (See: Someone Once Said, Lies, Damn Lies and Stastics).
Bolton is feeding propaganda to Simpson claiming aggravated assaults are down. Sorry, but we must have missed the “special enforcement” against aggravated assaults. Strange how robberies and homicides are up, put assaults are down. Surely no one is cooking the numbers.
Bolton is quoted in the article as saying “even a small percentage decrease is a huge reduction”. Huh?

The entire article is flawed and incredibly misleading but did you notice the astonishing error regarding auto thefts? The figures listed in the AJC show 6,392 Auto Thefts for 2007. For 2008 the figure listed is 6,776 Auto Thefts for a difference of +6%. In the SAME article that list these crime figures David Simpson states, “Larceny over $500 and auto theft both dropped 6%...” Actually auto thefts increased 6% Mr. Simpson but don’t let the facts get in the way of a story you want to write. This error would not have made it past a Jr. High School teacher checking homework but I guess it passes for journalism at the AJC these days. Murder is up, Rape is up, Robbery is up, Burglary is up and Auto Theft is up but CRIME is down. This makes perfect since to Bolton and David Homer Simpson.
TeBo - Darth Bolton - Revoltin' Bolton has been manipulating the media (or strong arming the media) for years. This enlightening 7 page article was published by the Dallas Observer on January 16, 2003.

"Bolton has deflected criticism with stubborn denials, a dose of one-on-one political charm and a media strategy that for more than a year has kept him largely out of view.
The Dallas Police Department under Terrell Bolton is burdened by terrible morale, spotty management and simmering resentments caused by mass demotions and some bizarre key hires, but those issues are seldom heard in public.
Anyone who dares criticize Bolton runs straight into a single-minded bloc of black politicians and activists working overtime to watch his back. Turn up the heat on the chief, and a few sparks--pickets at one's house, or harsh allegations of racism--are certain to blow back."

"After Price and a group of protesters burned a stack of newspapers outside The Dallas Morning News in early 2001, an event it never reported, the daily backed off its aggressive news coverage of the chief, says one former News reporter. "There were calls to the editors all the time to ease off the chief. Reporters were reassigned," says the source, who continues to work in the media."

"Meanwhile, the editorial page has given the chief a pass, writing virtually nothing about him in the past year--no editorial cartoons, no analysis of his words on New Year's Eve 2001.
"In September, in a vote that was overshadowed by the city's pressing budget shortage, Don Hill and other Bolton supporters were able to muster enough votes to protect two positions--with combined salary and benefits packages of $227,000--in the chief's office that Benavides had slated to eliminate. One was Bolton's $95,000-a-year personal spokeswoman, Janice Houston, whom Hill says is needed "to keep the chief out of the news."
I had the same reaction. My personal experience in 2008 has been that there was an increase in criminal activity in my own neighborhood. I hear the same from every civic association I know in north and central DeKalb. When I read this "piece," I knew something was smelly. It's a blatant spin piece and that is coming from someone who gives every benefit of the doubt. Shame on AJC! Very low quality journalism on this one - even with my public education I caught the GLARING mis-representations and outright errors.
To Kim, and every other DeKalb Citizen who reads this.... What are you going to do about it?? Arent you tired of becoming victimized in your own neighborhoods??? and telling your children its not safe to be outside? You have to understand, as a line level officer there is only so much we can do. However the higher morale is in the department the more the officers will take pride in the work and effort we put in, just as in any other type of office. Call the BOC let your voices be heard.
Kim Crime is up in DeKalb County, but guess what TICKETS are up, which means more revenue for the county. Nothing else matters, isnt that terrible?
There were some of us (citizens) who stood up last year, to the BOC and the commissioners who opposed a tax increase (why? because Ellis, Gannon & Boyer were all facing elections) that ultimately would fund raises for PD. Man I wish people had checked their history before voting...
We are not equipped to prevent crime. Only react to it.
And with this economy, it's only going to get worse as people become more and more desparate.
This citizen is taking action on every front. It is clear we need to take extra steps to protect ourselves, and pressure the BOC/CEO into action to improve public safety. Whether you vent here, silently suffer through your daily duties, or just keep your head down and go through each day knowing life is full of ups and downs, we all appreciate your dedication to our safety and making DeKalb a safe place to live. Feel free to pass along other ways citizens can take action...our ears are open.
