We all watched this train wreck from the very beginning when Vern fired Graham and started looking for a "national candidate" for the job which was designed to produce Vern's chosen "yes-man" as the only recruit. Ellis and DeKalb have inherited an extremely poor situation aggravated by the recession and Vernon's willing acceptance of Dunwoody's succession. (Vern and DeKalb could not be bothered with throwing a few "town-hall" meetings for the Dunwoody citizens and asking the citizens what they wanted, much less providing the services. To provide services to "rich white" Dunwoody in return for there hard earned tax revenue was too much for the afro-centric Vern administration.) What is done is done and now DeKalb must move forward including the repair of the damage done by eight years of Vern. From what I have seen, Ellis sees the problems but is incapable of "thinking outside the box" to solve the problems of a bloated and inefficient government entity. Example, Police Services and and the Sheriffs office duplicate many services and would best be consolidated but it will never happen due to politics and animosity between DKPD and the DeKalb Sheriffs office.
I have three more years and I am out of DeKalb and retired. It would be really nice to see the Ellis administration do some smart things and reorganize the county into a lean, mean and efficient machine.

Dunwoody has been trying to obtain citihood for about 27 years, so Vernon and his flubs were only added symptoms. In fact, when it passed, it was the third time through the legislature.

Aren't ther enough problems with current issues instead of re-hashing from 2003? We all know what happened and how it went down. How about offering some solutions. How about a blurb about who might replace Bolton? Let's get constructive. At this point it just seems like Jr. High.

Amen to the original poster, I always supported consolidation of PD and SO. However, too many people are concerned about who will be "in charge." Many county police departments and the Sheriff have always hated each other (can't blame the Sheriff because county police stripped them of power because the BOC wanted to have an army to control).

Vernon's ultimate goal was to turn Dekalb County into the NEW Atlanta-Fulton County and he succeeded in that. From race based hiring to neck rolling because somebody stood up to you, he has brought that Atlanta-Fulton style of governance to Dekalb. I would say let the Dekalb Delegation straighten it out but like the Fulton Delegation is only interested in trying to keep their political jobs.

Burrell is a good guy but he likes to play it safe. While playing it safe is good initially, Burrell is going to have to make tough decisions. Of course people will bitch and moan, but its time for the needs of the County to come first again not the needs of egos and personal agendas.

When I see how well things are being ran in other areas (Gwinnett, Cobb, Douglas--I do know that every area will have its problems), however at least the citizens are vocal and hold their elected officials accountable. And unlike Fulton and Dekalb, there is no north-south rivalry, the counties are considered one.

Bring the Merit System with S.O. and I'm on board. It wouldn't change my job very much at all.

Make all of PD road officers and let the higher ups report to the Sherrif.

How much can be saved?

Sure makes getting rid of Bolton easy. If his position is eliminated, he has not grounds to complain or file lawsuits.

Ellis should beg Dunwoody to come back. Dunwoody was a HUGE loss to Dekalb County tax wise. The people who pay the most tax get the least police protection. All the officers are tied up in the low income parts of any jusisdiction
90 + % of the time. The squeeky wheel gets the grease and the worst oarts of Dekalb get all of the grease from the PD.Jones left one hell of a problem legacy.

Isn't it amazing how history repeats itself, and that those who don't (or refuse/ignore, in VJ's case) acknowledge or study that history are bound to repeat it? While we can say, "I told you so", it's too little/too late for those who've had to watch it unfold while trying to do our jobs in a professional manner. The public will never know the crap a lot of good people have had to go through while trying their best to maintain the public good in the last few years - even before TeBo. One thing I learned quickly is never say, "It can't get any worse" - because it CAN - and did in this case. A lot of good people have been forced into early retirement and the public, although they again will never know it, suffered.

The light at the end of this particular tunnel is gaining strength - let's hope it continues to get larger.

This letter might be old, but it is important to take a look at what happened in Dallas. When Bolton was fired in Texas he cried and claimed he was a victim of politics. Benevides letter reads like a LONG rap sheet, similar to the one he has compiled in DeKalb. Where Bolton goes distruction follows. He is not the victim; DKPD and the citizens (including myself) of DeKalb are the victims. Bolton must go!

People in Dallas think everyone in DeKalb is crazy. They all think we deserve what we are getting because "we" hired Bolton. If only WE had a say in the matter.

SOBs...interesting. As a citizen I have to wonder if that is why so many have been popping up around DeKalb. Isn't there one right across from HQ that was highly protested? I've also heard about little seedy places in the Northlake area (King's Palace ring a bell??) Sure wish someone would investigate that!

SOB? YOu lost me.....what's that?

SOB = Sexually Oriented Businesses. It is referenced in Benevides letter (page 2 I think)

Ah....that's why I'm not in CID....should have gotten that. Thanks.

Haar, and I thought a SOB was my boss! Where do these acronyms come from? Do politicsilly correct departments have long and boring meetings to come up with these inane abbreviations or is this something the media handles?
