Opinion - Rader's Commentary on 2009 DeKalb County Budget

Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:37

An excerpt from the article as it appears at GoDeKalb.com

Operating Inertia
"Our fire and rescue department is undercapitalized and dependent on grants for adequate staffing. Our Police Department lacks patrol officers and squad cars while resources have been instead devoted to luxury recreational vehicles and layers of upper management."

I have the best plan for saving the budget. Mr Ellis just take a look a the PD Command staff page of our website
there are assistant chiefs running departments that are inturn being run by Deputy Chiefs

simple Fix
1 Chief 1 assistant chief
3 Deputy Chiefs
1 for Field Ops 1 for Investigation and 1 for support

all the motors star teams and commercial vehicles helos and precincts go under field ops

Investigaions speaks for its self
we will put SWAT and BOMB squad in this one because there egos couldn't take being apart of "support" anything

and everything else goes into this
I know some people will say thats way to much responsiblite for 1 chief thats why you break them down into smaller units run by Competent Majors. Key word being COMPETENT that way there are only 5 people in the department collecting chiefs pay not 9 thats a big joke

If I recall, prior to V.J., all we had was a Chief and three assisant chiefs, and things ran just fine. The precinct commanders had one boss that they answered to and everyone actually knew the entire chain of command. Can any one recite the entire chain of command now?, without looking at your cheat sheet?

Take a brief look at your history books, or at least the votes down at the BOC. Most recently, Rader abstained from the taser vote. Last year, he voted against both the merit increas and MPO incentives. Rader is not a friend or ally of the police department. True he didn't vote in favor of the magic buses, but he didn't vote for other resources that were necessary. Lastly, he voted against a grant to accept siezed funds from the Feds. Who does that???

Sounds like too many chief's and not enough indians.Too many sworn officers in admin jobs. Too many sworn officers being used as personal butlers. Too many people hired as trained sworn officers that don't really want to police.
Cut staff and put all of them into working units. Insist that supervisors make them do their jobs and keep up with the good hard working officers and detcetives or can them. They are there to fight and solve crime. Nothing else. Get efficient. Do it now ! simple plan.

I am a citizen of dekalb, got wind of this site from a friend. I thought it was pretty cool to give officers a way to vent. Only thing I see that "urks" me is seeing officers bash people that dont seem warranted. I can understand bashing the ex-chief for the things he did, but I bet I could put my house and income (past/present/and future)on the line that anyone of you guys would never have turned down a promotion or take home car or any perk that was offered to you. Im sure like any other business, turn down a promotion and any future promotions are down the tubes.
Why dont fire up make himself chief, looks like he has it all figured out. Except, it sounds like he has inadequacies in the genital department bashing on the bomb and swat units. Probably something he is too scared to try or has tried out and couldnt make the grade. Can you sound more jealous of those units? Or is there a secret crush going on there.
Like the other Anonymous said, sounds like too many chiefs and not enough indians. If your a patrolman, go out and patrol, if your a sergeant of patrol, keep your troops happy and they will return the favor. Quit worrying about everybody else and worry about what YOU do. Keep your heads up, do your jobs and be proud of the work you do and you WILL be rewarded. What goes around will ALWAYS come back and bite you in your ASS.

Thanks to the citizen for that last post. As a veteran of this department I agree 100%. However you will probably get bashed as an ass kissing koo-aid drinker. Oh well thanks for the honesty.

No one would turn down a promotion if offered to them, but at some point, we all have to remember what is right and what is wrong. We're police officers first, regardless of our position or rank. If we see something wrong, or even illegal, we should speak up about it.

There's a lot of Vernon baggage still in this department that needs to be removed.

Only when all of the Vernon baggage is gone can the department move forward.

Lot's of people sold their souls to be in good with Vernon and Bolton. They made their choice. Now, they have to live with it. They should have been bigger and better than siding with the likes of Bolton and Vernon.

To the citizen great job good one. Why are you worried about my junk. I have much respect for the good SWAT officers but when you put on that uniform it doesn't make you any better than any other police officer. some of those guys know it and some don't. Oh and for your information if I didn't earn it I don't want it thats whats wrong with this place the ivory tower likes ass kissers more than hard working officers. oh and citizen I won't label you a kool aid drinking ass kisser I've worked in Dekalb long enough to expect gay remarks like that from its citizens

wow......"gay remarks" what are you in highschool?

In less than 24 months ALL of this happened under Terrell Bolton:

>All of the Assistant Chiefs were replaced
>The Uniform Division Commander was replaced
>The Criminal Investigations Division Commander was replaced
>The Special Operations Division Commander was replaced
>The Assistant Commanders of all the above were replaced
>The Commanders of all five precincts were replaced
>The Assistant Commanders of all five precincts were replaced
>The Commander of Background and Recruiting was replaced
>The Commander of Internal Affairs was replaced
>The Commander of the SWAT Team was replaced
>The Commander of Narcotics was replaced
>The Commander of the TRT Team was replaced
>Every PIO has been replaced

Is this police department better off now than we were 24 months ago? I think the vast majority of DeKalb Police Officers would say NO! But that is just one persons opinion and I could be wrong.

When will uniform get some relief from being ragged out for the past few years? We need help NOW, not tomorrow or the next fiscal year. CALLS ARE PENDING!!!

I have seen this theme common throughout this blog and I agree totally. However, I have not seen it practiced ever. Not to say it doesn't happen. I have twice seen something wrong and spoke up and stood up for the people under me and the people who were affected. Guess what, in both cases it cost me my job. Then you may say "well take them to court" That's hard to do when your trying to feed your family. I have read every comment on this blog and I have to ask you this, with so much wrong, how many of you have spoken up? I understand Tebo was infamous at retaliation. What about those who were victims of him? Where are they now? Where did it get them? I will say I have the respect of all my peers and those below me but that doesn't pay the bills. For those above me (the very ones who were wrong) they won the battle or the war depending on how you look at it.
Citizens who read this blog, let the officers vent!! It's all they have. Unemployment is at its highest rate since 1929. Not everyone can afford to be St. Michael, and that's a shame.

To Truth:

Yes, you are right. People have been warned and punished for speaking out against flagrant violations committed by Bolton and Vernon. We all have families to support and must consider that. Thankfully, Bolton and Vernon are gone and we all have to worry less about repercussions for just speaking the truth.

Look at our current acting Chief. I heard he left IA because he refused to be a part of Vernon and Bolton's dirty work. His backbone served him well in the long run.

And to the idiots (the one or two Bolton supporters left in this world) who accuse us of just kissing O'Brien's butt: we're all anonymous here. How do we benefit from anonymously kissing someone's butt? O'brien is a man of integrity. That's why we all speak fondly of him!

The more I hear about Bolton, the less I respect him.
