Saw a terrible multi-car accident at the corner of Lawrenceville Hwy and N'Lake Pkwy today. The people in the flipped SUV looked like they were critically injured if not worse. It is a scene I couldn't get out of my head for the rest of the day. DeKalb Officers were the first responders and I just wanted to say you guys are amazing. More and more I'm aware how tough your jobs are, and I'm thankful people like you help protect and save lives each day.

I like your headline a lot better than the (newly revamped) AJC's spin on the matter. Somehow the newspaper always manages to focus on the wrong thing. They report "Man Dies in DeKalb Police Shooting" and don't even bother to mention until 2/3 of the way down the page that the officer was assaulted while trying to save two lives.

The officer will have to go through life knowing he was forced to take the life of another human being. Even justified it's a terrible burden to live with. It might have been completely avoided had the officer been equipped with a Taser - so when will they???

CEO you said you will make Public Safety a priority? This is not Mayberry anymore! Oppy is smoking, aunt Bee got her apple pie stolen, and Barney was told by a perp" I'm not going back to jail shawty".

We got to support uniform.

Support Uniform? Uniform is a an after thought.

We need new marketing... a new name or something. We can't keep calling ourselves "uniform". That's just too plain. Its not a name that brings attention.

Uniform sounds too much like farmer or farmhand....someone who jumps in, gets their hands dirty then just blends in with the wood work and the animals.

No one takes notice until the fruit of their hard work doesn't show up on the dinner table.

Yes Virginia, we still have a few tried and true officers left. Hopefully the new CEO will act before they are also gone.

Without using his name publicly, let me just say the officer should be decorated and given our highest honor at the next graduation.

He arrived at the scene, realized people's lives were in danger, and took swift action. He formlated an impromtu plan, gave orders to his fellow responding officer and didn't wait. Waiting in this barricade situation for a specialized unit would surely have doomed the mother and her child. He acted decisively and saved lives.

He should be recognized and commended by the Department and the County.

ps...did the mobile Coffee Clatch, I mean Mobile Precinct, make and appearance last night?

So if the officer only had a Taser this shooting would not have happened huh? The officer, who was alone, could have taken the significant risk of being stabbed in order to use his Taser on this suspect. And this actually sounds reasonable to some of you?

As far as I am concerned, this young officer did what he had to do to protect himself and other people. Damn a Taser! End of discussion.

stop talking taser! Dont bring a knife to a gun fight. He did what he was trained to do. PERIOD! I can just see you Monday quarterbacks saying "if he would of used his gun he would of been alive." Am sure the AJC and some will still say he did something wrong. Support each other.

I am proud to work on the same team as this officer. Every day he proves that he is better than the rest...and last night when he was faced with a tough decision, he didn't hesitate to do what we were all trained to do and stop an imposing threat. Anyone who criticizes his actions should be ashamed of themselves

Fine Fine job says Ethel. Too damn bad for the perp, who was sucking up good air from the rest of the descent folks in the world.
Taser's are only pratical when there are more than one officer present in a situation like this.
You shoot and miss, I can without a doubt say you wont re-load a taser or even draw your weapon before he slashes your throat wide ass open.
Yes they are a great tool but not in every situation meat heads.
Now I commend the officer, and have great admiration for such people who can send some lead down range when need be.
Now being personally involved in such a situation myself, I can also say that when your time comes, pulling the trigger is easier than you may think. It seems to come natural when your life is on the line.
And yes you will remember it for the rest of your life, but it is the perp who began the battle, you merely finished it. And when you look at your loved ones you will witout a doubt know you did the right thing.
So again I say Fine job young lad Fine job.
Rock on Chief O'Brien!

This officer is one of the best Center Precinct has. Very respectable, smart, nice, and most of all sensible. He did what he had to do when presented the unbearable decision. Good Job!
