If this happens a lowly officer or detective of PD, they have to pay for the weapon. I wonder if craps rolls up hill too?

What the hell? What officer goes anywhere in DeKalb County, especially anywhere on Lawrenceville Hwy, and leaves his 69 in the car? And this guy is the Sheriff! What was he doing? Buying more barbed wire or aluminum toilets or cinder blocks for the jail? No. Buying FLOWERS. Wow. This dude is hardcore.

What is SO's policy concerning duty weapons and their loss?

You mean to say that a sheriff has so little to do in his position that he has the time to go out shopping for plants for the DeKalb jail? Give me a freakin' break! Aren't there county employees whose job responsibilities include selecting "plants" for the jail grounds? or just maybe these little "butterfy" plants were going to fly right into the yard at Brown's residence. Really doesn't matter where they were going to wind up - point is, even a rookie knows you don't leave your service weapon exposed in your vehicle ! Brown stated he had gotten on to other officers recently about doing the very same thing. Wonder what kind of disciplinary action, if any, was taken against them. Maybe Mr. Do Right Brown should suspend himself for a few shifts just to reinforce that everyone gets treated the same at S O. And by the way, isn't that the Home Depot that is in very close proximity to his residence? Guess since he's the "sheriff" , he can do whatever he wants, when he wants. Hmmm, sounds like something we all have heard before from someone else who no longer works within our police dept.

He stated on the news last night that he was going to pay for the weapon. Time will tell...

It was probably T-Bo!

I expect my fellow officers to be sharper than this. If the crap hits the fan, how useful is your weapon if its not on you.

Tisk... Tisk.. Stay sharp out here guys..

Thank God for the mail man who was able to find his gun. It was left in a post office mail box. I guess the Sheriff put fear into the thief. He probably had the whole Sheriff Fugitive Unit about to work the case.

I bet if they arrest the perp the Sheriff will make sure he is not refused due to etc.

Headache -High Blood Pressure- Looks Sick- Just don't feel well- Too Drunk- Too Combative- I feel like I have the FLU- Yes I think I'm pregnant- you guess it whatever you think you need to go to the doctor.

Yes all the perps know the routine.

This is not surprising years ago Fire Chief Brown asked me how I slept at night knowing that I had put people in jail. I of course explained that was no problem the problem of sleep was when I could not get the evidence to arrest people who had raped, robbed, or murdered. This was his mentality then so obviously he does not need a weapon.

Definately not the first time it's been done. Save the complaints for the big stuff. Why is this news worthy anyway?

Re: DekalbCoPolice

Heck, Even us GFL holders know better. Carry your firearm since you never know when things are going to go south. Plus, every criminal knows to look in the glove box or center console. Much easier to take it from there than off my hip.

It's new's worthy because the long-standing minor fued between DKSO and DKPD over duplicate operations and operational preocedures involving processing and incarcerating criminals. This is only natural.
If the county wanted to save some real money, they would abolish the DKSO and Sheriff, and combine DKSO/DKPD whilst stripping off the redundant components.
Sheriff Brown is the only honest DeKalb Sheriff that has seen in three decades. He could of easily covered up his misfortune but as usual did the honest and correct reporting of the event.
The looking for flowers explanation will follow him to his grave....

If he was 'shopping for flowers for the jail', then I'm a pygmy astronaut! I really don't have a problem with him doing a little personal shopping but he didn't need to come up with that lame reason for being at Home depot.

I see an advertisement in the Crossroads newspaper where he will be speaking to citizens along with Gwen Keys and Commissioner Mays on how not to be a victim of crime. Bet he hated the timing of this one.

Let us not forget that Brown has never been a deputy or police officer. He's a fireman. This is very news worthy, because anyone in the first week of the academy knows better. I think Brown came out with the story, because if he didn't it would have leaked anyway.
Sorry LoFlyer, the police department would be abolished before the SO would. What other county do you know of that has a PD but not SO? There only six Georgia counties with both.

You are right Anon16. DKSO would be the survivor of any merger between DKSO and DKPD. Unfortuately the DKSO is ill-fitted for crime fighting, DKSO is basicly a security and jail force. They do have a small warrent section, but does not have the law-enforcement mentality or attitude to do police work. (niether do I, which why I am a county employee supporting you guys)
Sheriff Brown is an honest and able administrator. He comes from the Fire-services side of Public Safety and besides his tenure as P/S director he has little experiance catching crooks. However in view of the past two DeKalb sheriffs, I am willing to cut him slack on his lack of LE experiance.
I told the sheriff shortly after his being elected that the DeKalb employees were thrilled to have an honest man as the DK sheriff. I still feel the same, after Dorsey I can accept a few mistakes every now and then rather than the thugs and rampent corruption introduced by Dorsey.
My personal take on the theft was that some criminal who had spent time in the DK jail made the hiest, and was smart enough to realize it was a poor decision and turned the weapon in. It will be interesting to see whether the perp is caught or goes free.

I am not just a critic. Tom Brown is perhaps the first honest Sheriff Dekalb has had elected and serve in many decades. From Ray Bonner forward have done time. This is not talking about Derwin he never had a chance to serve.Tom Brown may be a good administrator I do not know as a public safety director he was possibly adequate. His police academy was held in his office by a female who came from either Fulton Co or APD to give him his classes so to me this training is suspect. He is still the best Sheriff to serve in decades. Just damn.

The office of Sheriff is an anachronism. It's time to do away with it, or at least significantly change the qualifications to run.

Is it really a good idea to make the top law enforcment officer in any county someone who potentially never worked in law enforcement a day in their life? Someone could run a flower shop one day and be top cop the next?? That's dumb!

Is it really a good idea that convicted felons (like Sydney Dorsey) can be Sheriff? Look what happened with him! That's dumb!

Just a quick comment in reference to people at DKSO not having a law enforcement mentality. I know that is really not the case. I have several friends there that were jam up street officers, but then they got promoted, and what happened to them??? They were sent to the jail. From what I understand all their experienced people are now supervisors in the jail while the street supervisors have little to no experience. The bylaws of the Georgia Constitution require that there be a Sheriff for every county, no mention of a Police Department.

You people need to lay off the sheriff because people say he is actually pulling the stings at DKPD also. Just ask Mr. Ellis, Politics at its finest.
