APD Officers Refuse Cooperation, Chief Unresponsive

You gotta love it! We just hope when the day comes here, our department will follow APD's lead.

Amen to that! Citizens should have no right to pass judgement on officers. There is no need for this and there are enough hoops for us to jump through already when a complaint comes in. A Citizen Review Panel is just another moral killer and serves no purpose. Why would an officer want to work for a department that has one when you could just leave for another department without that. That's all it does...makes officers put in applications other places to get away from the crap.

Law enforcement and journalists: two professions in which the employees complain about how no one wants to talk or tell them the truth, yet when the tables are turned they are some of the most tight-lipped folks around. Cops can be some of the biggest proponents of "stop snitching" around.

I already answer to my superiors and the Board of Commissioners (elected by the citizens of DeKalb County)...why should I have to answer to some bogus board created to placate a bunch of citizens who have no concept of what goes on in this county. Don't get pissed about 42's and 44's when I can't go out there and take care of business on the streets.

BTA...that's all I need to say. DeKalb County was a safer, more pleasant place to live when officers were empowered to take care of business. If you want security guards, call Wackenhut.

Stupid ideas like this "Citizen's Review Board" are the reason so many police departments are having trouble attracting quality candidates. Look at how many young rookie officers are ending up in handcuffs either because they were perps to begin with, or the training process has been so sanitized that any piece of crap with a pulse can make it through.

until you stop watchin the cop show get off your lazy butt and walk a beat you can't pass judgement on an officer and yes we are tight lipped because must people judge police work by what they see on primetime TV

Thats funny why do citizen sit on law enforcement review boards when they have no education in policing do citizens sit on Doctor review boards no other Doctors do or when a lawyer gets gets introuble by the bar other lawyers sit on there reviews. you see you can't put any plan jane or john on a police review board you need to have other officers

The last commenter asked why citizens sit on law enforcement review boards. The answer is that law enforcement is a public-sector government job. Citizens sit on plenty of other boards for review of government functions. Doctors and lawyers are generally private-sector jobs. And if the last commenter is so concerned about citizens who "have no education in policing," then what does he think about citizens being members of juries?

Juries are the exact reason we don't need citizen review boards. The jury IS a citizen review board.

There is no need for a citizens to be reviewing every single bogus complain that come in to the department. If there is criminal conduct, let the citizens review it during jury duty.

The reason the officers refuse to appear is because their testimony is not protected by Garrity as it is when the make a statement to IA. The Review Board is basically threatening them if they don’t appear, but their testimony can then be used against them in any criminal case. So until their 5th amendment rights are protected very few officers are going to cooperate with the Review Board.

Officers, please check your constitutional rights at the door.
