So, Where's The Money?

Click Map To Enlarge

The powers at be are wanting to open 2 additional precincts, split the existing precinct into zones, commanded by captains and overseen by a major. Part of the expansion calls for the addition of buildings to house the new precincts, including the property and buildings of the former Devry Institute of Technology in Decatur.

The reason for the purchase of D.I.T., is to house Center Precinct and Recorders Court.

To man these new precincts, the department will have to promote at least 2 majors, 4 captains, 12 lieutenants, and 30 sergeants (not including filling current vacant positions) and add somewhere around 150 officers.

Each new precinct will have to be equipped with cars, office furniture, computers, printers and phone lines at the very least.

Communications will be a disaster. The current CAD system is failed. It will have to be completely revamped or throw out with window.

This expansion will cost the taxpayers millions and millions of additional tax dollars the commissioners claim we don't have.

All the while the county has taken away our sick leave pay, they have taken away all merit raises. Cost of living raises has been taken away, and now we are working at a reduced pay rate.

The commissioners continue to suck the life blood out of the officers in the streets, yet continue to build monuments and shrines solely for political reasons.

In these grand plans, where has any assistant chief, the chief of police, the director of public safety or any commissioner, stood up and said "the officers need to be taken care of first!?"

Throughout the past 12 years we have been continuously beat down by the police administration and commissioners alike. They refuse to listen to the officers in the streets. They refuse to listen to the supportive citizens. Now they are kicking us in the ribs and our departmental leaders remain silent.

When is everyone going to stand up and say enough is enough? Enough with the "solving crime, and funding the county budget, one ticket at a time".

The madness continues!

AJC....Three commissioners – Larry Johnson, Lee May and Sharon Barnes Sutton – are in Reno attending the National Association of Counties conference, commission chief of staff Morris Williams said. The conference and the election led staff to cancel all meetings, Williams said Monday.

In my opinion spending more and more money on wild schemes like this will do nothing to improve the qulaity of life for the citizens of DeKalb. It will only bolster the BOC's opinion of themselves. What needs to change in DeKalb is the mindset of the voters there who continually elect fools to run the show. It is pure insanity to heap more and more of these ideas on the taxpayers and expect them to pay for it when it will serve no legitmate purpose. And, the officers are going to be expected to just adapt to it and produce even more to pay for it. The BOC is delusional. They come up with schemes like this while unincorporated DeKalb is being annexed away by citizens who need and want protection and are willing to start a new government (city) just to get what they need. They do this because of the complete failure of the BOC to provide them with adequate representation and police services. Whos to say that the City of Decatur wont grow and expand to annex the area where D.I.T. now sits in the near future? Or the city of Atlanta wont grow and annex even more of south DeKalb?
Over the past 20 years the BOC has only represented a small but very vocal portion of the county and now the unincorporated parts of the county are being taken away from them because they have screwed it up so badly. The way things are going the only part of DeKalb that will be served by the DeKalb police will be south of Hwy 29. Just some thoughts from an old retired DeKalb Police Officer.

Well I know for a fact that at a certain precinct, warning citations are being issued out like candy to a baby.
I sit and watch sergeants log between 5-10 citations per night.
Thats a far cry from the normal 20-40 per night.
Sooner or later they will notice that the stats are down. I for one am not paying for another precicnt by working my ass off until I get my holidays back, my merit increases back, and I receive along with every other officer back pay for what has already been taken away.
If you can afford to build other precincts then damn it you better be able to afford to staff it with real officers and not just bodies with no life left in them.
Bill I know you like your pay scale, but you need to take a stand publicaly not just behind closed doors where we the officers cant hear you.

Do you have any idea what happens when you publicly say your boss has not idea what he or his staff are doing? Well ask a certain general how well that goes. There isn't any police chief ANYWHERE that will come out publicly against a mayor or in our case CEO. Now a sheriff can because that's an elected position and not beholden to anyone but the voters.

These current crazy ideas are coming straight from Decatur. Believe that!! The chief and director are powerless. This place won't change until the voters decide to change it and that aint happening any time soon.

Anon 5: Derwin Brown stood up for us. He stood in front of a camera. His ticket slow down brought this county it's knees. Recorders Court had to lay people off.

communications will combine radios no doubt

again - do your damn ticket furlough and you won't have an issue. This will be very worthy news; however it requires TEAM WORK and DEDICATION or else it's just a bunch of scattered warnings. Ya'll need to start texting each other and making more friends from other precincts. Every couple hours or so - keep tabs from your "Agents" at other precincts to keep tabs on how many tickets other precincts have written for the day. When you do that, you see the results - and it can motivate you. See! This can be fun and amusing. Cuz i ain't writin' anotha' ticket fo Isht!!

Is this just a political promise made by Little Vernon? God help us all.

This is nuts.

7 precincts, 7 commissioners...maybe they can each have an office at a precinct.

More pandering to South DeKalb. The new "South" and "Flakes Mill" precincts look nice and small, so the numbers for those areas will be deceivingly low and the commissioners can convince their constituents that they live in Mayberry. It's the same shell game they tried when they dumped 1/3 of East onto Tucker...look how successful that was.

Can you tell us who's leading the charge on this and where the info is coming from?

As a citizen, I want to know where to use my voice against this plan -is this a Police HQ issue or is this coming from the CEOs office or a certain commissioner or...??

Any direction you can give about who we should talk with is appreciated!

To Anon #10,

This coming out of the Director Miller and Chief O'Brien's office.

You can complain to Burrell Ellis, which will probably fall on deaf ears. Remember, we police officers are working for reduced wages while Mr. C.E.O. and the other commissioners and their staff are receiving full wages.

We suggest you get with your homeowners association or neighborhood watch group and voice your concerns collectively.

Thank you for your support,

DeKalb Officers

To house center precinct....

What are the white shirts starting to feel uncomfortable around regular uniform officers? ....are they beginning to feel self-conscious about all those reserved parking space and pimped-out Crown Vics?

Nothing will change no matter how much you scream and shout. The citizens don't care because they are getting "more officers" in there area. Upper management knows push come to shove you (officers) will do as your told.

You can have 10 precincts and crime stats will not change .

This is just like when they change East Precinct boundaries so they could attract new businesses to Stonecrest Mall. They even assigned an on duty police officer in a police unit to patrol the mall.
Its just a shell game the county is playing to try and attract new businesses. Do you really think with more precincts crime will go down?
Look at Dunwoody crime has increased with it new police department.

If you haven't heard the news or so called rumor. I heard a certain rumor that department heads got a $200.00 bonus check the same week we loss money from not being paid on a holiday....if this is true, i want answers..why should my pay being cut be paid to someone when i work my ass off. Get ready cause I see a lot of angry officers oh and they probably spent the money when they went to reno, i say we picket maloof building.

DeKalb Officers said...

Just a rumor for now. Doesn't make since. Why only $200.00?

We are not on board with this one.

But maybe we will be proven wrong.

The best thing about this blog is all the hard talk that comes out of it. The worst thing is the lack of follow through. Are any of you actually going to do something about this. When push comes to shove, will you stand up and do something or will you just TYPE IN ALL CAPS TO LET US KNOW HOW MAD YOU ARE?

Anonymous said...

Directly from Uniform Division:
We are not producing until we get holidays back and merit increases, BOC listen you can open up another HQ but it will not make a difference with crime and stats. You need to motivate the officers you have on the streets. I have these men and women under my charge and agree with them, No Tickets! Take your time going to non emergency calls and do the minimum required. Piss off voters every chance you get, make the phones ring off the hook at the CEO's office. Be safe out there.

Optimus...outside a 41, I haven't written a long copy in a while. You REALLY have to piss me off to get a long copy.

I'm wondering what the response will be when I ask for more warning tickets... THAT will be interesting. I'm sure almost...ALMOST... all my sgt's are on board, but I'm not sure about how much pressure they're getting from above.

They've taken a smart, very productive officer who made good cases, crossed the "T's"/dotted the "I's" and turned that officer into a clock watcher.... House/Business Check - 10-63.

The Hyena has tasted $30 million of the pension. They have the taste for blood; they know where the nourishment is located. Be warned.

maybe I'm completely off base but I like the idea of additional pcts. the only thing I don't like about the current map is it has the pcts covering only the unicorporated areas. why not draw the pct boundaries to cover all the county. we should be a border to border agency, not the un-incorporated dekalb county police.

IF I QUIT, THEY WILL HIRE 10 MORE PEOPLE IN MY PLACE AND PAY THEM YOUR FURLOUGHED MONIES!!!!!! THEY NEW ACADEMY HAS LESS THEN 20 PEOPLE AND THEY JUST PAINTED THE WALLS OF EAST PRECINCT.
