"The Kensington Triangle": Offical War Zone

The Kensington Triangle, mainly Kensington Station Apartments, has taken the place of housing projects of yesteryear.

Isn't Section 8 great!

Well if they stayed in prison a few years instead of probation for all.

I am new to Atlanta and plan to move to Kensington Station Apartments next week...sounds like a bad idea...?

I think all the rich liberals in Emory should take an apartment in Kensington so they can get a first had view of what they try to push on the rest of us.

How about we get officers off the interstates with radar guns and pull Burrell's DKPD neighborhood watch and send them to Kensington? Oh, I forgot, nobody important lives over there or near there so screw them. The reporter should ask those residents their opinion about Burrell's security detail with DKSO deputies at work and DKPD officers in his subdivision. Maybe we should move the CEO over there and crime will instantly disappear

I know if I lived there in the triangle I would have guns to protect myself and my family too. Like it or not, poor folks have a right to defend themselves just like anybody else. They made a big show about all the guns they have confiscated there and I would assume they are all taken from criminals in the commission of a crime, or drug raids etc. I worked that area for years and its been a war zone for a long, long time. You should have seen all the shooting at the stroke of midnight 1999 - 2000!!! That whole area is a complete disaster and no place to live or raise a family if you care anything about them. But it is so close to MARTA....
What I am saying is do you think the social experiement, that is DeKalb County since the early 1970's, has gone horribly wrong?

The master plan was/is to bulldoze all the projects in Atlanta and force all the residents of them to the suburbs to reduce crime in the city. The wonderful leadership fo DeKalb county liked that idea because they would be able to fill up those vacant apartments where everyone left because of the explosion of crime. Dekalb embraced section 8 housing in an effort to get more federal money at the expense of all the long time residents of the county who now have to live in a war zone. Its not common knowledge and it does not make the newspaper but a lot of resident of DeKalb have to go outside the county now to do grocery shopping etc because the neighborhood stores are so dangerous. If you dont believe me, go to a grocery store in Conyers or Snellville and look at the tags on the cars to see where they are from. There are not enough police officers on this planet to deal with all the crime in the "Kensigton Triangle" much less all of Dekalb.

I didn't realize the Kensington triangle was in such bad shape. Glenwood Ave. always felt more intimidating to me.
On the Kensington Triangle area, doesn't the county owned and abandoned executive park property abut the triangle? This is another legacy of Vernon Jones. He bought the land with green-space money and built the beautiful new Juvenile court on the corner of the property down in the hole. The majority of the office complex was abandoned and from what I can see, is being used by DKFS for training by all the holes in the roof. The complex looks like a disaster area and is the perfect hideout for the criminally inclined.
This would make a nice story for the AJC or Champion, A failing office complex bought with Green-space money intended for parks and well, green-space. About a 1/7th of the parcel bought was used for the JC, and the rest of the property abandoned. The story reeks of unethical use of funds by Vern, and the fallout is a blight upon the community. Good 'ole Vern, the gift that keeps fracken' giving!
I will kinda out myself, as I am finally free of county entanglement. Email me at kencnet@hotmail.com, ex-county network engineer working for DeKalb IT.

For my CIO. You are playing in the big leagues, grow up and leave the Mickey Mouse stuff to Disneyland. You know where to reach me.

Best of luck, mates!

"The master plan was/is to bulldoze all the projects in Atlanta and force all the residents of them to the suburbs to reduce crime in the city."

I believe this is happening all across the country, not just in Atlanta. This plan to disburse Section 8 was NOT well-thought out. As (in)effective as prison without any efforts toward rehabilitation, the crime is just being transferred to other areas - the burbs - that had previously been able to enjoy less crime - that's why we MOVED HERE to begin with! Why do you think cities like Dunwoody and Sandy Springs were hell-bent on becoming incorporated and getting their own police protection?? Because we needed more police to combat the increase in crime resulting from the influx of criminals, and Dekalb County sure as hell wasn't doing anything about it. (Before I get attacked for linking Section 8 to criminal behavior, please let me say that I KNOW not all Section 8 people are criminals. OK?)
But whatever problem this ill-conceived plan was supposed to solve, has put previously decent places to live smack in the face of crime on a daily basis, and we are fighting back however we can...
Godspeed to you guys - not a day goes by when I don't thank you for what you do.

Is it any wonder, thanks to our "awesome" leadership, why our government, the BOC, can't pay our officers and now take money from them? It's because the once solid tax base here in DeKalb County has taken flight out of the county to much safer pastures. I would too if I could. It's just so sad to go from the pennicle to the dumpster in a short 20 years. Thanks DeKalb leadership. You really suck at what you are doing! Though I try with my vote each and every time to try and do something to make a difference, regrettably my vote falls in the minority because the wrong people keep winding up in power. It's just so sad for us law-abiding citizens who make positive contributions to our county to appear to have no more significance. God bless our public safety personnel. I'll keep speaking out for you as best I can. I can only hope and pray that one day my voice and those of a few others will turn things around to make it better again for all of our sakes.

Public housing projects were like tumors. Big tumors are easy to deal with. Section 8 is like taking those tumors, cutting them up, and planting them all over the body. Where you used to have one tumor in one area that was easy to deal with and you knew what you expect, you now have a entire body infested with life sucking cancer.

I am old enough to remember when Glenwood and Candler was a nice area and Belvedere Plaza was where the folks with money went shopping....and I am not even 50 years old! I am also old enough to remember when most of those apartment complexes were built around Atlanta and DeKalb and I even lived with my parents in one of them when I was a kid. I never thought I would be locking folks up daily in that same complex that now looks like a war zone. Where I used to run free and play, now the little children hide indoors or behind the stairwells for the most part and the older children roam aimlessly or hang out on the corner. Garbage litters the streets now because the residents just throw it out and dont care. Cigarette lighters are used to burn the siding of the apartments in the breezeways buy teenagers with nothing better to do than to damage the place they live; And, gunfire, theft of all types and vandalism is a daily and nightly occurance. Murder and mayhem, violence, drugs, sirens all night long.... About 1992 I actually found a body in the very spot I used to play with a toy car in the sand as a child.
Now I ask you, is THIS what you call progress????? Is THIS what the voters of DeKalb wanted? Is THIS what the elected leaders of DeKalb envisioned? Do you like living in a war zone?

Hey Anon 12,

How bout this for a sign of how things change over the years.

My Mom's first apartment - Memorial and Line St.

My Parents first home as Newlyweds - Glenwood and Chandler.

My Aunt & Uncle lived on Jolly Ave.

Would you let any of your family live at those addresses now? The Kensigton triangle must be new. What are its boundaries? Kensington Rd, Redan Rd, and Mountain Dr? I remember when the Belvedere Box was a big deal.

Keep your spirits up but your head down folks.

Ron Burgandy....penny for your thoughts?

PatsQB/Anon 12,

Not to worry.... I'm sure there's a specialized unit in the works to be permanently assigned to work the Kensington Triangle. (I believe that encompasses - Memorial, Kensington and Covington Hwy.)

I would expect a new unit/units to be formed in conjunction with the redistricting of Dekalb. With all the new precincts, the further depleting of uniform officers to answer 911 calls/patrol and the assignment of new patrol cars to them can/will be slipped in under the radar.

It's a good thing Center Precinct moved to the glass building with elevators that never work on Northlake Pkwy. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to have your headquarters right in the middle of worst pocket of crime in the county?

I'm a conservative politically and I hate to see people live or have to live in the terrible conditions such as the "Triangle" but they have to take responsibility for their own situation. Get educated and get your selves out of that situation. I was poor too and I did something about it.

I lived in Kensington Station for 9.5 months in 2010. NOBODY told me about the high rate of crime. I lived scared the entire time and thank God my job moved me out of state. HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE!!!

Well I moved into Kensington Station April 29, 2011 all the way from Chicago, IL and I haven't experienced anything of the above like what I'm hearing!!! Not that it would be too much of a shock to me... because the Violence in Chicago is way WORST in my opinion... So it would've been something I'm already prepared for!!! Perhaps, I missed it or either because I don't involve myself with neighbors and get in their or allow them in my business... But the only action I have seen over here is the domestic violence... a neighbor and her boyfriend fighting... which is something that happens everywhere! I don't involve myself with anyone besides my family in this complex... I walk around to get my exercise and I also workout in their fitness room as well as use the community grounds pool... but never have I heard of any gun shots... robberies etc... I don't like that they have a bunch of abandoned units; mostly on the ground floor and I assume that its because people know that they are known for 1st floor break ins... but other than that... I honestly dont have any complaints... but after seeing other places; I cant say that I am going to remain in this community but thats just because I want to move into a home eventually...

Me and my family have lived in Kensington Station for many years and we are completely Happy. Yes their are some issues but nothing any different from any other apartment complex I have lived. My kids play outside daily with their friends and our neighbors are pleasant and keep to themselves. I'm surely not complaining.
