South Precinct To Be Divided In Half

For reasons unknown, South Precinct is being divided in half, with Captain R. Moore in charge on one half and Captain B.C. Harris in charge of the other. Major T.D. Williams will remain precinct commander.

Is this the first move in re-organizing precinct boundaries? Why not start with Tucker Precinct?

Does this mean the officers paychecks will also be divided in half as well.

Good point about reorganizing Tucker out of all the precincts. Way too much territory and too few people to cover that much ground. Southside huh? Same county different game.

Isn't it already divided in two? S1 and S2?

Are they each going to get their own radio channel?

I have a better question! With the Sgt's test coming up, which ignorant, useless females in the department will be given answers to the test this time around? It's a tradition in this department! Look around! You know it's true!

South Pct is the highest crime area. It just needs a captain assigned to each part to consentrate on it's operation.South pct has the highest consentration of thugs and other idiots but the rest of the county is not far behind. Why is this? Why can't Dekalb be a great place to live and work as it once was?

To Anonymous #3,

DeKalb will never be it once was. Look who is running the place. Enough said.

How can you divide South and still cover it with officers?...... will the new precinct be manned by a new specialized unit?

With all the specialized 9-5 units, we don't have enough in regular uniform now!

What happen to the Dekalb Reserves? that sounds reasonable. building security, signal 3's, screening, private property 41's and transports.

This will save the department tons of money and resources.

This is just stupid! Why not send ICP to the empty sub-precinct and leave south the way it is. With south arguably being the busiest precinct and already short on man power the brass decides to split the precinct by taking away 30 officers!!! S2 will gain 2 territories from east and s1 will handle 20's-60's!! I'm no genius but somewhere manpower is going to be an issue thus production will drop in order for officers to be able to back their territory partners! WHO MAKES THESE STUPID DECISIONS??? First our money now the little comradery that we had with people that we've been working with for years! WHATS NEXT???

Each half needs a Captain assigned to it?.....

That's the part of the problem with the this department... too many white shirts in the office....too many specialized units out shopping/cruising during working hours and not enough plain, Jane, uniform officers answering calls and out on patrol.

Not with ya on additional captains.

The reason for the split is that District 3 (S1) is under Larry Johnson and District 5 (S2 and East Pct) is under Lee May. Lee May promised to reduce crime and raise police presence in his part of South(S2). Due to the low numbers coming out of the accademy.. boosting police presence is only going to happen one way. To create a seperate precicnt in S2. Plus it doesn't help that South's crime is way ahead of last years stats and has almost double the next closest precinct so far this year. The "powers that be" had to do something to get Lee May off their back and this is all they could come up with. The nest precicnt will be out of the fire station at Flakes Mill and River Rd. It will also get new cars and computers. It will also include the 470's and 480's from East Precinct, but will still operate on South channel.

Question: You want to know why this place is going downhill so fast??

Answer: District Attys Office

in DeKalb County its worth it to do the crime, selling dope equals 5K a month, if they get caught its a SOR on a felony with only probation. As soon as we start putting people in prison things will start to change.

I know crime is really bad in the south precinct. I worked it for years and covered 2 territories, mainly in S-2, alone for a good deal of the time. It was wide open most of the time and I always had a big stack of paperwork to turn in...done by hand! The two main things that have changed between now and then is this paperless reporting system (which I think is a load of crap)and the way individual officers used to police has changed. Thier mindset is not the same as it was several years ago. Back then we knew we were on our own until the cavalry arrived and we also knew when it did arive there would be hell to pay for those who made us call it. We also knew that almost all of our supervisors would take care of us at least somewhat, and a good many of them actually miss being in the fight themselves. Back then if you hit the police, ran from the police, or did some other thing that required physical attention.....YOU GOT IT. Back then if you Wanted to 10-80, we would be mare than happy to chase you for miles until until the tires came off your car. Back then a chase with a stolen car was a treat and it happend several times daily at south precinct. Back then if you wanted to be in the real action you worked south precicnt and all the other officers who worked the other precincts respected you for it.
Now, officers hands are tied by (even more) stupid "rules of engagement" and have to 2nd and 3rd guess whether or not they should actually defend themselves. Instead of having to recount the events of an incident in steps that it happend, they have to do it on a computer screen in a car , which in my opinion is much harder than just writing it down the way it happend and turning it in. Now the officers have to wonder if the supervisors or the legal system (the DA's office & the Board of Commissioners) will come after them if they defend themselves even more so than when I was there. NOT having the DA's office in our corner and having to use the stupid paperless system is a severe impediment to an officers ability to do his/her job and it just takes more officers more time to do it.
They have hooked anchors to the officers at every place and told them to "go forth a be productive" and now they are so tied down they cannot do the job. But, some way or another, the officers seem to be able to do the job and keep the faith amidst all this adversity. Divide S-1 and S-2? Please.... South precinct is already the most divided place I can think of and the only glue that has held that place together for all these years is the thought that the police play no games down there.
Just some thoughts from an old retired cop...
