‘Officer Down’ A Chilling Refrain

In 2010, 10 law enforcement officers in Georgia died from injuries suffered in the line of duty, more than double the number in 2009, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
We can only hope the commissioners keep this in mind during the budget process.

Good souls with productive lives, taken from us too soon. May they rest in peace, and may you all be safe.
If our County officials can't find a way to take care of you the way you should be, they must have hearts of stone.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do to protect us.

It probably doesn't seem like it from within the blue circle/line, but you actually have a better chance of being hurt or killed as a garbage man than on the beat. There are a lot of jobs more dangerous than being a constable and the insurance industry and risk management studies back that up. Just sayin...

Anon 10:12, aka dumbass-

"studies blah blah blah...." Stop trying to sound more intelligent than you are.

How many DeKalb County garbage men have been killed on duty in the last 30 years?

Anon 10:12, when a garbage person gets killed is because they were stupid enough to step in the way of an oncoming vehicle or stuck their arm in the back of the truck and got pulled in.

In law enforcement, officer get killed because they were protecting the public from harm. Can you tell us what other job there is that you would go looking the scum of the world that want to harm you. One big reason there are less officers killed in the line of duty, is the contant training they go through.
So take your facts, well you know what you can do with them!

Garbage men are all we are as cops in DeKalb....at least thats the way we are treated. Or maybe they thing WE are the garbage.....
Whats the difference between riding on the back of a truck smelling garbage and sitting in a filthy police unit smelling a homeless person or crackhead in the back seat? Both get a ride; One to the thunderdome and the other to the dump.
Remember several years ago they let the garbage pile up in the streets for weeks in a major city up north. Just imagine what this place would smell like in the summer if we let the garbage and criminals pile up. Wait, this place already IS a dump. Oh well....
Makes you wonder whos grand scheme it was to turn Dekalb into economic & cultural paradise that it is today.

When garbage collectors start wearing and extra 40 pounds of gear that includes a vest, 30-45 rounds of ammo, a pistol, a backup pistol, handcuffs, a taser, a flashlight and a can of OC..... let me know. I don't know too many people who work in sanitation because it is a "calling".

Also, let me know when someone puts together a Garbage Man Down Memorial Page that needs to be regularly updated with recent losses like the one found at http://www.odmp.org/ .

Garbage...it's all just garbage.

Regardless, the garbage collectors and officers shouldn't be seeing their paychecks go down year after year because they can't get a cost of living or merit increase that might help offset the doubling of their pension contribution and the cost of health insurance that covers less each year.

What we should be seeing is a BOC that CUTS the frivolous spending and put that money where it is truly needed. The money is there....no need to raise taxes on the citizens.... just make better use of THEIR money.

Dude are you for real? Garbage man
? Really?
Let me know the next time a garbage man gets his life taken from him for just wearing a badge or gets shot at just for showing up on a scene.....call sanitation the next time you need someone to stop a thug from breaking into your home or some piece of refuse points a gun at you....
