Television Show "The First 48" Comes To Dekalb

Burrell Ellis, Wiz Miller and others welcome the television show "The First 48" to DeKalb County. We don't.

This nauseating television program is making monetary profits from the blood and death of human beings and the sorrow of the families of the dead. DeKalb County was chosen because of the odds of someone being murdered, not because of the odds of someone not being murdered.

DeKalb County is receiving money from the A&E Television Network. We wonder how it's paid out. Per body or the most gory? Some street thug shot in the street, or a innocent girl walking to school. Keep those fingers crossed.

Think of the poor ole Wells Fargo armored car guard that was just gunned down. We can only imagine the number of people pulling for him to die.

The citizens of DeKalb can seek comfort in knowing in the corner of some governmental office in Decatur or at police headquarters, someone is wringing their hands in anticipation of someone being murdered, for profit.

This is our county government's idea of exposing Dekalb County's name in hopes of bringing in legitimate businesses and getting outsiders to come in and purchase homes.

Burrell Ellis and Wiz Miller should be seeking remedies to reduce crime instead of profiting from it.

Hmmm, I watch this show a lot, but I respect your opinion about it. I hadn't seen as profit from death; I saw it as educational for those of us outside the system.

Hey, its money in the coffer. Do you think that the public relations of Dekalb County is interested in anything else but money? Face it people.....Dekalb County has become a holding place for all types of thugs, crooked policitians, and those who sit on their pedastals thinking how to screw the taxpayer, all of which is nothing new.

Why would a TV show be any different from anything else to show attention to this "fine" county? Dekalb County has made a name for itself. It is in the newspaper on a daily basis for one reason or another. 99% of the crimes committed in the metro area has a Dekalb County connection.

Those on the front line of our police department see the bad news as it happens daily on all three shifts.

Do you think the policticans are going to do something about this? You are very wrong !!!

As I have stated before, "The beat goes on".......

The show serves no purpose other than show that Dekalb is a cestpool of crime.
So the way I see it, is that it keeps good descent citizens from moving into Dekalb, and forces good citizens to flee the county.
WHAT IDIOT APPROVED THIS!!! all we are left with is a crime ridden county.
But then again I already knew that after 20 years of policing here.

I think it will be good for everyone to get an idea of how bad things are in DeKalb and what PD puts up with on a daily basis.

Wow I can see this blog really has become a place for people to find something wrong to complain about. Is there nothing better for you to wine about than this? I would rather you have talked about how we can help that armored car guard then talk about a show that brings to light the murder rate in DeKalb. As if the show not coming here is going to stop or reduce the murder rate. Did you stop to think the money the county got from the show might go into helping to buy stuff for this run down department to help fight crime? I use to defend this blog but now I can no longer do that. This will be my last post and last time reading this blog.

The First 48 shows how hard some dedicated officers are willing to work to clear their cases. When my husband worked Dekalb Homicide(for many years), he worked 36 hours a day if necessary to clear his cases and he was one of the best they ever had ! There will be murders whether a TV show is present or not. You think shedding light on the crime in Dekalb is going to inspire people to buy homes or establish a business there ? Exactly how does that work ?

Anonymous said...

You honestly think the money will be used for something beneficial to the citizens of Dekalb and the DKPD? Really?!? You have obviously not been paying attention the last few years.

I'll wait on the CEO's press release to see how the money will be used...yeah right.

To 1206 PM, Goodbye...Oyeah,, thats right yourll never read this again so you wont see this..... I like the show. What I dont like is how the Detectives say they feel bad for the dead perp... I dont feel bad,I do when it is someone killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.....I am waiting with open arms for our 1st star from Dekalb county and the suspect(s)that will be apprehended. I am waiting with glee.....

This will be convenient for 48 Hours to catch footage of DKPD crumbling to the ground. The investigation is already underway via Don Frank case regarding the obvious discriminative promotional practices and placements over the past several years. Standby for many more indictments and suits.

Anonymous said...

Yep if you've been on a promotional list in the past 6 years and can read and write but weren't promoted consider yourself a lottery winner. The lists have already been subpoenaed to my understanding.

Most rational people understand that there is crime everywhere, and they understand that police work is not always a tidy business. Those same rational people will not hold the DeKalb Police Department, or the county as a whole, responsible for these two undeniable truths. I would rather look at this as an opportunity for a well deserved spotlight to be placed on some very hard working and dedicated investigators.
Don't complain about being under appreciated and then complain again when the best and brightest of the department are given the chance to shine.

Maybe we can get our concerns voiced on TV.
Maybe we can have a moment to tell them that dekalb had and still has:

THE BEST people.
THE best training.
and
THE most honorable warriors.

but that we have a system that is taking advantage of us.

A system that perverts our labor with corruption on a county level.

And maybe we can point them to this blog.

This is money in the counties pockets...heck - I may even be on TV haha - but this can be an opportunity to change things as well.

This is a Godsend people! take advantage of it

Does anyone know when this show will be airing?

Anonymous said...

If it brings the citizens into our world and they get a better understanding of what we do and how hard we work........then it's a good thing.

As far as more indictments ....... I've heard that for years.....just happy to no longer be hearing it said about those currently running the department ...thanks , Chief O.

I'm just curious which detectives the show will follow around because from what I've seen, the detectives there now are untrained and don't know what they're doing.

Anonymous said...

I have made a new definition of the Board of Commissioneers. The BOC now stands for "BUNCH OF CRONIES"

This fits them perfectly !!

Dekalb IS NOT being paid to be on the show. Zero, zilch, nada. So the basic premise of your post is false.

Let the good officers and the entire dept have their moment in the sun--don't piss on it.

Blogmaster...I don't really view this show as something profiting off of murder and gore. The focus of this show is on the detective work that goes into solving a murder, not the murder itself. It is educational in the sense that it shows a very cold reality that a lot of people only ever see on television.
That being said, I'm not necessarily insane about law enforcement tactics and procedures being shown to everyone in the general public. It gives away some of the tools that we use to solve crimes. If a perp watches enough of such material, they'll try to play on it and drag it out when they get caught.
I really do like this blog, but it seems like as of late the blogmasters are politicizing everything to the level of being spin doctors themselves. Is it bad here? Absolutely, but I also think that if there was a post on here about everyone having a five thousand dollar check waiting for them at supply, there would still be whining.
All in all...the show's here. My feelings are mixed on it.

So do you think the Producer of the show is going to work saying "I hope nobody gets murdered today?"

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:51pm,

You're not as clever as you think you are! Get a life!

Anonymous said...

What does being clever have to do with it? The guy wants Murder so the Detectives can spring into action! I am sure he does not want his crew sitting around with nothing to do!

Anonymous said...

I think the show will be good for the department. It will shine a light nationally on us and show how great a Homicide Unit we have.

If they do make some money off of the show DKPD will use it to put some rims on the Chargers they riding in now & maybe even buy some Hummers. Now you can get pulled over in style while they writing them high ass tickets. There is crime all over the city of Atlanta not just Dekalb county. Lets not talk about Fulton.......

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:46,

Your point was stupid and useless. Did it really add to the discussion? Of course they need cases for the show to work. Duh! But to say the producer is somewhere praying for people to murdered so he can have a great show is just stupid. It's DeKalb County. They didn't come here because it's Mayberry.

Anonymous said...

Really????? Once again the blog spouts off before confirming, verifying or even asking anyone. Once again if you are going to try and report for us please TRY to get it right.
“DeKalb County is receiving money from the A&E Television Network”. Wrong.
“The citizens of DeKalb can seek comfort in knowing in the corner of some governmental office in Decatur or at police headquarters, someone is wringing their hands in anticipation of someone being murdered, for profit.” No profit and if you really think this is the case you are just dumb.
“Burrell Ellis, Wiz Miller and others welcome the television show "The First 48" to DeKalb County. We don't.” Who is WE? You sure as hell don’t speak for me and by the looks of the comments not for many.

I congratulate Dekalb Countys homicide unit. I love the show, the focus is clearly on how hard these detectives work to solve murders. I am Looking forward to seeing our department on A&E and I'm disappointed that this article is so negative....

jaz said...

I'm excited about the news. I love the first 48 and I stay in dekalb co. lmao @ the person who wrote this!! Deaths are going to occur whether people are filming or not.

Anonymous said...

I think it is a good show and I think it will be an awesome recruitment tool. To bad we don't have the money to recruit more officers.

Anonymous said...

You know, I've whatched this show several times, and have to say that I think you've got the wrong idea.

Nothing about the show glorifies murder. Instead, it shows how hard detectives work to catch the ones who did it.

Also, I don't really see it giving away a lot of "inside" information. 99 percent of it is just good old fashioned hard work. As for the other 1 percent, most people already know that your cellphone can tell on you in a heartbeat.

I'd suggest that, honestly, the people who would be most likely to benefit from this probably aren't going to be sitting around taking notes anyway.

As for making money, the only thing Dekalb gets out of it is a recruiting video and a PSA. Not exactly lucrative.

Then we come to the crew sitting around waiting for somebody to get murdered. Y'all might want to know that it's a running joke in the rest of ATL that we only watch the news to see how many people got shot last night in Dekalb.
The murder is already here, let the department get some good PR for the hard work they do.

All you idiots claiming it's bad for us or just here for monetary purposes are so slow. It's not hard to tell when a show is contrived and set up. (Like "Undercover Boss"). This show has made me appreciate the work of detectives and not only that, they show you what the family has to go through when a murder occurs. A&E
s reality TV shows are actually authentic unlike MTV or VH1. With a good amount of viewers catching escaped or fleeing criminals will be much easier. Stop being so idiotic.

Everything on this blog the last few years has been about money, money, money. It is getting old. I worked on the fire side for a few years and it was put simple to me, if you dont like your job, or the money go ahead and quit because they took in 3000 applications last month!

Anonymous said...

I concur with the opinion of the author of this blog. Bringing in this tv show just glorifies violence and makes the county look like a cesspool. Voyeurism shouldn't be endorsed by the people we look to for leadership.

I really like watching The First 48 hours but with my busy work schedule I don’t get enough time to watch it! Now that I have a Sling adapter with DISH Network, I’m able to watch TV anywhere on my iPhone and I won’t miss any of my shows! I’m an employee of DISH Network and their also my TV provider. Check out Dishnetwork.com for more info.

I'm excited they are going to Atlanta because it's a huge city and I know the cases that's going to be profiled are going to have a ton of twists. The victims deserve justice and for the most part, every detective profiled on the show take passion in their duty as a detective and vow to find the killer. I've been a long time fan of The First 48 since it debuted in 2004 and I'm going to continue to watch it! I'm actually watching it right now. I work and subscribe to DISH Network and when I'm at work or out of town, I watch this show and any other show on A&E using the TV Everywhere function in the DISH Remote Access app. The app is free and it let's you watch live or pre-recorded shows from your DVR on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or any Android supported device. I love it and I am always recommending that people come to DISH Network and I am inviting anyone who comes across this post to explore DISH Network and experience a value unseen by any other TV provider!

Dekalb county Need to get a faster response unit before trying to go to do first 48, i live down the street and it takes them 30 minutes after sum-one broke in and left then they come, step ya units up to speed first

Anonymous said...

Speed has little to do with response time.... many times calls pend because the officers on duty (see those responding to dispatched calls...not ICP or NET) are answering higher priority calls, they are waiting at the precinct for the previous watch to bring in the patrol cars they are using, and their sergeants are doing J2 (watch lists, evals, complaints technology...).

If you want faster response time, we need more people on the street in regular uniform and more patrol cars.

Faster response time will cost you either up front or at the cost of a reduction in the number of citations issued by uniform officers dedicated to ticket writing and/or attending community meetings.
