Our quit your whining!

How is the First 48 going to hurt DeKalb's image? You do realize we have at least 3 news channels that start their evening news almost every night with the phrase, "Breaking News from DeKalb County."

Read the article...it's a hoot. Maybe CEO didn't sign off...but, Richard Stogner did. Fat chance the BOC will have any influence in back-tracking on this...appears there is a signed contract. I imagine 48's lawyers are a little better than ours. It might not be a good thing...but, what it HAS done is highlight the lack of concern certain people have for the welfare of this county and its employees...you know, every man for himself...can't wait to watch it on TV.

Let them film it and let them show it on TV. Are the commissioners trying to hide reality? Let the citizens see what really goes on in Dekalb County. Maybe they will see what a great job the police do and what politically crappy leadership we have to deal with on a daily basis. That's what the commission is afraid of for sure.

What are the Board Of Crooks and the police chief worried about? If the county didn't piss money away for the stupid things, then Dekalb County would have enough money to hire more police, more and better equipment, and not have the notarity of being a county with a heavy influx of crime it cannot solve. But noooo.....The county had to spend money on hushing certain people up, buying new furnishings excessively for a new commissioner, and buy property it didn't need.

The one thing governments have a hard time with is learning how to SAVE MONEY. The BOC doesn't have any trouble spending it, they have a lot of trouble in SAVING IT.

Now that Stogner has put his "X" mark on a tv contract to show the world what kind of sewer Dekalb County Georgia has become, and now get paid for showing off. The taxpayers will a wonder if this county will ever regain the recognition it really deserves instead of looking like the crime infested county that is.

Keep it up BOC, Stogner, and remainder of the crooks in Decatur, and instead of making the news as the public sees it, the county will now be on TV in a story telling mold instead.

Dekalb County will resemble the old tv show called "The Naked City" where the closing remark was....."there are eight million stories in the Naked City, and this past story was one of them".

Lee May DeKalb is on the news every night about somebody getting murdered why do you care if somebody in another part of the country sees what we have to see. Are you afraid somebody might come down here and want to clean this place up and start looking into the Decatur Ivory tower. Everybody knows DeKalb is a toilet bowl so stop bitching about DeKalb being seen as a crime ridden County you all made it that way. live with it

You know, there's one place on your body that you never get to see; it's that hole between your butt cheeks. Well now all of America will finally get to see this one. Let them film. Let it be shown nationwide. I hope it does run business off, that it does run people off, because unfortunately, until this place completely falls apart and needs outside help to get fixed, nothing is gonna change!
Dekalb county is a cess pool and the truth needs to be shown!!

The TV show said that it chose DKC because the PD had a high crime clearance rate. The one year spike in murder rates is considered to be beyond the control of the PD.

New County motto:

Move your business to DeKalb County. You might get murdered but there is a good chance that the PD will find the killer.

"First 48" is an excellent way for the nation to see what a great department Dekalb has, even with the furlough days and budget cuts. Instead of showcasing how depressing you can be, why not show everyone how Detectives and Officers can work together to solve crime in our County. Politics should not enter into how or why you do this job. Be professional. The story could read, "Inspite of.....the Dekalb County Police Department worked hard to solve cases and reduce crime"! This could work to the Department's and Officer's advantage by getting public support while you support the public. Keep whining and you will be seen as a joke and the criminals will flock to Dekalb to make your job even more difficult.

I have to agree with O’Brien on this one. I just don’t see what the big deal is. Every urban – metro police jurisdiction has murders. Are we trying to hide this fact? It will be on the news most of the time anyway.

The show is called a, “Reality Show” for a reason guys. Murders happen. This is reality. The program just shows our detectives trying to solve the crime. I am not sure how much it helps DeKalb County but I don’t think it hurts anything.

As usual the BOC's concern is image and not substance.
Three questions, will the filming of the series disrupt or slow down an investigation? Will the privacy of DeKalb citizens be assured? What tangible benefit does the county derive from the filming except a lousy recruiting video?
Personally I say renegotiate the contract for three percent of the profits and dump it into the general fund for specific use by DKPD to place more cops on the streets.
The guys at DKTV can produce a video for no cost that is sufficient for the task of recruiting.
No matter what is said, the filming will be slightly disruptive, I also feel that it will improve DKPD morale somewhat. At least it will get your minds off the latest screwing by the BOC of your salary and benefits.

Speaking of murders. The scumbag who murdered Sgt. Thomas’ (CID) fiancĂ© has been on trial for the last week in DeKalb. The jury reached a verdict today. Guilty on all counts. Good job Major Felony and good job to the District Attorney’s Office!

48 hrs coming to DeKalb is a good thing. Crimes occur everywhere there is a large population of poor unemployed. You dont have to watch the show to know there is crime in DeKalb, hell like a poster wrote earlier,it's on the news nightly. If anything, this show shows in detail what the life of a detective is. It 's not all sitting at your desk 9-5, staying home when it snows. They have to come out no matter what and work the crime. That goes for allll officers not just detectives . The public needs to see the crap that lives a few miles from their nice nieghborhhood. The BOC as much as they detest us need us and they want us there to keep the crap away from them even though they think they are immune from it. Keep screwing with PD Stogner and BOC, you will one day need us and you will continue to screw with us even after we have helped you, special interst and all. That is our lot in this carrer we chose. We will live with that. You will have to live with the fact that your poor decisions and corruption have crippled this county and you will have to live with that. 48 hrs you are welcome to stay as long as you want as far as i'm concerned.

Or..is the BOC afraid the rest of the country will see what a great police department DKPD is,fueling support for the police and a spark from the public for the BOC to stop screwing with a great police department, who comes through even without the support of it's employer, the BOC.

The fact that the First 48 shows at least one aspect of county gov't that exceeds national averages doesn't harm DeKalb. The BOC putting their heads in the sand about DeKalb's problem does the harm. The one sure TV show to scare America would be a reality show that followed the elected leaders of DeKalb around.

Oh yea Burrell..your statement to the AJC that you "think we have a good story to tell in DeKalb" hit the nail on the head. All the way back to 1990 with the Presidential Hotel scandal involving so many in high places both within the dept. as well as a member or two on the BOC all the way to the present day where employees who are fired are paid hush-money to insure their lips remain sealed. Without a doubt: DeKalb HAS good stories to tell!Maybe the next t v group that could do a special on DeKalb will be 20/20 or Dateline. Now that would be some good 'watchin'. Stay tuned.

The officers and detectives of DeKalb County should be highlighted. They work damn well together and the numbers show. DeKalb has already had a tarnished image; can you say Terrell Bolton and Vernon Jones. From Buford Hwy, to Turner Hill, Memorial Dr, Brocket Rd, and Candler Rd, those officers/detectives work hard and the BOC should see that on film instead of trying to 'B' about "The First 48".

We head on over to the county for the next bundle of dysfunctional synapses, where we have DeKalb's Homicide Unit featured on "The First 48", a reality show following investigators during the first 48 hours of homicide investigations. The show's producer selected DeKalb because of the the DPD's superior effectiveness at investigating murders. The plan was approved by the department, supported by the CEO and a contract is in place. Now the County Commission has their collective knickers in a knot. Why? Because some of them think this makes DeKalb look bad. To quote one pointy headed politician: "We're not proud of our murder rate and I'm not sure why we would want any visibility on homicides." Duh? How about so we can address these crimes and get them under control. Given that this commissioner uses the no-see, no-hear, no-say approach to governance he probably hasn't noticed that a significant bit of violence occurs every Sunday at "clubs". Perhaps a bit of attention would reveal a simple solution to at least some crimes. Maybe even something the County Commission could do. Other than pretend there isn't a problem.

My wife is actually facebook friends with a detective who's in another city on it.

She said that it did not impact their work, and they never got the feeling that it was portraying anything incorrectly.

Also, they were great about hiding faces, plates, locations, just about anything the investigator needs to have withheld.
