Police/Fire Nearly Out of Network Storage

In this modern age of computer technology and a paperless system, police and fire have only 168 gigabytes of storage left.

This is really quit funny. It seems a county that spends millions and millions of dollars each year on IT could swing a little more network storage space.

We are still running down rumors the county completely ran out of network storage until someone plugged an IPOD into the system.

Lets go back to writting reports, this place is sooooooo far behind in technology its rediculous.

You know Dekalb was one of the first agencies to have in car computers in the 80's.

From what everyone who's been around tells me, the old written reports were faster than the clunky system we have now. Only problem with going back to written reports would be reading reports from folks with godawful handwriting like myself!

Does this mean that Im gonna lose Forrest Gump and every one of the "Rocky" movies that I have downloaded on my desktop?

Damn ...you can buy 1TB of storage of storage on a portable drive for under $200 at Best Buy.

Hey it gets even better.
Everyone is aware of the new laptop computers that are being issued out to CID to replace the desktop units. Well guess what they all come with the newest of Operating Systems which is Windows 7. The best operating system that has hit the market in 15yrs...but what does Dekalb County do, you guessed it..screw that up.
Unfortunately the county decided to ghost all of the new laptops with Windows XP operating system. A system that is over 10yrs old...
Windows XP was first put into use in February of 2001. Why in the hell would you give up the most advanced operating system for a dinosaur of one which even on it's best day sucked....I'll tell you why because the Vision RMS system is not compatible with Windows 7....so why wouldn't you just have the Vision folks that sold us this shitty report system update the software of RMS so that it would be more up to date with the newest of technology....simple...we work for freakin Dekalb County and It makes too much sense and would be much more cost effective. The idiots in this county govt never stop surprising me....

Hey the one thing this place is definitely good for is trying to reinvent the wheel.

Hand written reports were much better in my opinion. The quality of the officer always show in the way the report was written. Stupid, incompetent, and illiterate officers always stuck out like a sore thumb. Thats another reason they went "paperless"....to hide downward spiral in the quality of officers being hireed and especially promoted.
In my opinion we were better off with the old KDT MDT's. Explain to me what great benefit these new computers have over the old KDT's. and real handwritten reports?

How is the "paperless ticketing" initiative going ??? (Or should I direct my question to Ellis and Miller??) Haven't had a ticket in 30 years, but should it happen, does the lack of storage mean my ticket will "disappear" ??
Note: Yes - my comment is intentionally filled with sarcasm, and my questions are rhetorical.

Windows XP is still the military/paramilitary standard.

Even though 7 has been out for years and 8 is coming out next year.

There is no argument about the fact that Windows 7 is the best windows operating system that has ever been created and 8 is suppose to change the windows platform for the next decade or more.

Even windows 7 has a revised kernel and better design than XP and def. vista - period.

When windows 8 comes out XP will be obsolete. They have already stopped offering it as an option not too long ago.

Although XP has been successful for a long time (and although I never personally liked it) XPs time is done.

This was the time to update to 7 and do away with the whole CAD system software as a whole.

I challenge dekalb officers to look at the CAD system software of other quality agencys. Go take a look at the Doraville, Cobb, and other PD software.

They have a Real time visual GPS, real time position of all cars in your zone, a heck of a better Chat option that is flat out addictive, much more friendly and creative user interface with plenty of options and overall more polished and cleaned up with simplicity of use. it's almost fun to use.

Our CAD looks like windows 98 with downloaded skin. Its Gray, dull and a bore to use. I might actually look forward to writing reports if the user interface inspired me one bit.

We all know morale is extremely low here and there are so many justified negative comments on this blog about it that I have decided to post something positive about this place:

Windows 7 is a great operating system and seems pretty stable thus far. But not much of the corporate world has embraced it yet for the same reason they didn't migrate to XP until years after it came it out. New operating systems are notorious for bugs and compatibility issues. Vista wasn't compatible with tons of hardware, like printers. Why do you think we never, ever migrated to Vista? Upgrading your home computer to the latest and greatest operating system is a lot different than upgrading hundreds of networked pc's and an entire enterprise. At home, you really just need to be able to view your personal pictures, type up a letter in your word processor, and use your web browser to surf for porn. Businesses and government agencies have a lot of unique and proprietary software that isn't always compatible with the latest and greatest OS. XP may not have the slick user interface that Windows 7 has, but it's a very stable OS that can do everything we need it to in order to do our jobs.

Im glad all you nerds are on our side. I bet thats how we ended up with such a sorry, obsolete system in the first place......(bad) nerds baffling Decatur (them) with bullshit :)

The reason we have the CAD system e have is because money was exchanged under the table and made several people some sweet pocket change. The reason we don't get a CAD system that was designed for the 21st century is because the right people haven't recieved a payout from a company deploying such a system. Dekalb COunty runs on bribes and favors.... nothing else matters.

Seem to me y'all a bunch of spoiled brats. You complain about not having new computers so when they get us new ones you complain about the operating systems. If windows 7 doesn't allow critical application to run on it how do you suppose to do your job. XP is old but it's allowing us to do our jobs " well some of ". Storage space as i was told is from people who have pics, movies, etc on the shared drives that have been there for over eight years unused & untouched. If you have people continue doing this eventually your going to run out of space. That's common computer tech 101! Stop complaining about the little stuff and be happy that the Chief thought enough of us to get us new equipment chumps!
