E911 Operators Now On 12 Hours Shifts

The E911 center has gone to 12 hour shifts to increase manpower and eliminate overtime pay. But in reality, the only thing being accomplished, is a decrease in manpower because of the number of people resigning because of the new schedule.

12 Hour shifts aren't bad, I've been working them for the last 10 years. Every other weekend is a 3 day one. That is if they do it right.

Typical Dekalb thinking. No planning, just action.

I definitely think that the Public Works is the protected brain child of Stogner, Burkhart and Ellis. This department is so well protected from from any action that the other departments face is absolutely true.

NOTHING bad happenes to PW/R&D.....NOTHING!!
They the most useless bunch of lazy parasites ever put on the face of this earth.

I watched a detail of that group install a "speed table" on a county street the other day. It took six men to lift two hand shovels and put some dirt on the side of the roadway. This operation lasted about ten minutes, then it was rest time. They stood around talking to one another, then marked out the design of the island. All total, this preparing took about an hour, then it was time to get into their trucks and sit there with the motors running. Now this is what I call very productive. A private contractor would have this entire project done in one day, not the week and half it took the county.

This is Dekalb County progress at its finest!!!

Most left because of other reasons, not just because the new hours.12 hour shifts was proposed by an operator, it was a little over a month when it was implemented,so the operators who left already had plans to leave. we wanted "teams",weekends off,now we have them,my co-workers are STILL complaining. Most of the ones that are complaining, complain about every little thing, yet and still they do OVERTIME. I want to enjoy my every other weekend off with my family so I'm going ride this out, an extra 2 hours is not going to kill me or anyone else, let's hunker down, enjoy it while it last,we will probably be on 5 and 2 this time next year.

12 hour shifts are sweeet IF you aren't getting screwed by working over 40 hrs in a week and not getting paid OT. One agency's formula is this: work 3 12's-36 hrs 1 week, next week work 4 12's at 40 hrs reg and 8 OT hrs, OR forfeit the OT and talk half the day off. How is E911 doing it?

overtime, really?? I wish I was allowed to get OT

In ref to furloughs: What are they waiting for to let us know? Guess they are going to make us squeeze them in like last year. I guess i will take them in conjunction with off days and holiday time. Every1 plz be safe because there will b no units to back you. .

Well 12 hours in a confined space is very tiring I bet.

Hey I have worked every possible shift in law enforcement. the typical 5-2(city police),6-3(GA corrections),4-3(DKPD), and 12 hrs(same city police just converted) every other weekend off. Yes 12 hrs on the road is ok, but trust me when I was employed at DeKalb before Sh$t went bad and too much politics, 4-3 is still considered the best schedule! On the 12hrs one day is spent recouping and it really feels like 5-2. I think 4-3 is the only good thing left of the benefits of being a DKPD officer. Also look at this 4-3 saves money for you commuters while the other schedules will drain gas!!! Look at the prices and I believe you guys will not get a cost of living increase no time soon. Stay strong guys, I still believe some of you guys are great officers; don't let the bad apple syndrome effect kick in.You guys are many wars on many levels.

Tomorrow the Board of Commissioners will decide on
the 2011 budget adjustments to
the county authorized position listing deferred in March and April. 219 new positions,112 deleted. Go to the BOC Agenda and
see what they think they need.

Heres a question... When will Dekalb County start hiring recruits again?

Why should DeKalb be concerned about hiring new recruits again, you ask? Because they can't afford to pay those of us that they already have!

The 12 hours shifts for officers and even nurses works because they are out and about..able to walk around or move about. In 911 you sit at the console for hours upon hours. Your ability to walk around is limited to the length of your headset cord. When I worked the 10 hrs up here, taking a break was a joke even when you had to go relieve yourself. You had to beg or cross your legs at times. I just see this as an unhealthy solution to account for the short staffing and inability to retain employees.

we still have calls pending...it was suppose to help with staffing..the other night there was 3 on call taker...

Makes me glad to be out of there. Concern for the operator's well being & morale is non-existent.
