Numerous Police Cars Broken Into - Follow Up

Two questions: 1. Why is a security guard driving a police car around? 2. Why pay one more dime to the security company when the county can get the reserve officers to do it for free? Oh, wait. The reserve program has been axed.

Aw Geez. They stole police radios. Just damn. So now they have all of our police frequencies right down to the precinct or unit they go to. And other jurisdictions as well. How handy is that if you want counter-intelligence when committing crimes like armed robbery of a bank? As a matter of security, we need new frequencies A.S.A.P. unless by some miracle capability communications can wipe those radios clean remotely. Of course, they would need to have power and be "on" to even do that. And that I doubt otherwise why would our military destroy in place crashed but salvagable military assets.

Just damn.

They stole the AM/FM radios, not the police radios.

Sooo... Security guard did it? Has a buddy that did it while he was not there for the first two hours? And why do we have security for a freaking police department??? And don't say we charge too much, somebody would work them. Hell, give them overtime / comp-time. Just stupidity. But, it is DeKalb, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised by any of it...

Blog master can you post a heading about what the County/Boc is trying or not trying to do about blocking HB87. The County stands to lose billions of dollars if the hispanic community leaves Dekalb and or Georgia. This may push Dekalb into bankruptcy.

All you need is a cell phone to listen in on Police Radios fool.

While we are pointing out dumbass comments and gramatic blunders...YOUR is not the same as YOU'RE...

Now to the topic at hand. The security guard worked 13 minutes? Was Wiz moonlighting?

Must be a personal friend of Burrell Ellis or Richard Stogner who got that contract for "security" at the maintenance lot.

Actually, a German Shepherd could do a better job patroling that lot than the flunkie employed by that company.

This is typical Dekalb County contracting.....give it to the lowest price, not the best service or product.

Bearing all this mind, what else is new?

The security guard driving around in a DKPD cruiser? Sure, why not? How many others out there who are NOT sworn officers drive cars, carry badges, guns, radio's, etc?

If the radio was a Motorola that was stolen, a simple stun command will take care of it. Can't even read it afterwards. Wanna listen to DK radio? It's live on the web at www.radioreference.com 24/7!

I bet no one knew that the security guard was arrested for providing a false statement to CID. Who would think that the county would hire a security guard who lied and is a perp himself.

Hargh! Contract security within DeKalb Government. Except for the high-profile facilities, CH, Ponce and Maloof bldgs, Police HQ or Recorders Court the contract security guards are little more than window dressing. They look good but provide no benefit or value to the county or the citizens. Their orders are to stay out of trouble and if they do find trouble they are to call the Deputies or police to handle any real problems.
I have ran into some very good and caring security guards that were helpful and competent. Unfortunately most of them leave after six months for doing their jobs for low pay and pissing off citizens with questionable backgrounds and bad attitudes.
One of the problems with contract security is that the priorities have been set incorrectly by the county. We have contract security in places that don't really need security and not enough at places that do need them such as Fleet Maintenance on Memorial drive.
I am not a security expert but have been drawn into security issues due to the congruency of modern security camera systems "riding" on data networks that allow security cameras to be used by anyone with a networked P/C and security camera software.
DeKalb government does not have a coherent, intelligent security policy that addresses the risk assesment of a county facility that integrates security camera systems, alarm systems and guards. At present each department is responsible for the camera systems and Facilities management is in charge of the security guards. I am not sure who is in charge of the alarm systems. Fleet maintenance did not have the money for a camera system for the lot, and Facilities management did a poor job of risk assesment to provide the security necessary for a high value/high crime environment. Combined with lousy security guards I am only surprised the crimes did not occur earlier.
PS whatever happened to the magic buses? The last I saw they were at Memorial Drive and I personally didn't think they would last long with the low security at the Memorial Drive site. I would of loved to place a 25 grand bid for one of those babies.

There are no cameras at the new motor maintenance? The old motor maintenance had cameras and I noticed some guys installing even more cameras at the old motor maintenance once everyone moved out a month or two ago. Maybe they should have put those new cameras at the new motor maintenance!

Anon May 5, 2011 12:13 AM,

'preciate your remark. And too late "my friend", I already am a detective. I know my specialty. How communications systems work is not it.

You see, the point of my comment is to point out the potential for a breach of security. Our security. And since I am not versed on exactly all of the in's and out's of our radio system and its capabilities, the point of my comment was to open some effective dialogue with some other intelligent officers or detectives apparently for their constructive comments. To that end, then I could learn even more.

Now read Anon May 5, 2011 1:46 AM comment, "They stole the AM/FM radios, not the police radios." You see, informative (to me, I didn't know it was restricted to just those) without being belittling.

Now read Anon May 5, 2011 4:47 AM "All you need is a cell phone to listen in on Police Radios fool." Another informative comment despite the immature "fool" attack. Hmm, didn't know about the cell phone ability but I am well aware of the capability on the Internet. But it figures anyway, what can't you do with a cell phone anymore nowadays.

To Anon May 5, 2011 8:34 AM, I love to see another intelligent person posting comments on here like I do once in a while. It's nice to read comments with proper spelling and grammar.

And thank you Anon May 5, 2011 4:13 PM for your comment, "If the radio was a Motorola that was stolen, a simple stun command will take care of it. Can't even read it afterwards." That's good to hear and I hope it is done. Thank you for enlightening me.

So you see to those of you who just love personal attacks and resorting to name-calling, there are things to be learned and taught here on this blog by those of us with intelligence and respect for our fellow officers and/or posters(can't exclude LoFlyer). :-)

Respectfully,
Anon May 4, 2011 11:57 PM

Maybe they can keep the extra units at Ellis' house, then they will have 24 hr. police protection. How is $35 thousand for a camera more than a security contract. Cameras don't take breaks or have criminal backgrounds. Why not have a patrol officer pass by ever so often during the night. Shows everyone just how safe this county is when the police are the victims also. Thanks Ellis for making public safety your top priority.

Where's Waldo, I mean Wiz? The actions of the CEO(s) have turned me into a relentless - I said RELENTLESS - supporter of the City Manager system. CEO must go.
