Can You Say "City of Brookhaven?

"Now homeowners in stable neighborhoods just south and east of Duwnoody are likely to bear some of the biggest tax hits. Their property values have mostly held steady, not dropped like much of the county."
Looks like Burrell and his Gang of Four have bitten the hand that feeds them.

I can tell you that the GA legislature is more than ready to rubber stamp another city in Dekalb once it becomes organized.

Yes I can!!!!!!!!!!!

Dekalb gets what it deserves. You cannot continue to tax the folks in North Dekalb while those in South Dekalb get drastic reductions in the property taxes because their values have plummeted so much. People in South Dekalb still use county services at the same rate as before, but now pay much much less for it. I for one am in full support of ANY community that wants to bail on Dekalb. 2,500 more employees than Gwinnett is a joke.

Its important to make sure that the political force pushing for a new city is not motivated by a self serving political agenda.

Where can I get an application?

If these citizens are really interested in changing things for the better. They should start contacting their state legislators about abolishing the CEO position.

What political force is NOT motivated by a personal agenda? If the reason(s) are just, what's wrong with a personal agenda? Sounds like there are lots of personal agendas here, all saying that they are tired of paying for services that others use without those others having to pay "their fair share"...and that's what it is all about, right?

Vernon's dream has come true! A County in which the North pays most of the taxes and the South gets most of the jobs and benefits. DeKalb has become a prime example of the Obama wealth re3distribution plan aided and abetted by the Liberal Commissioners Gannon and Rader.

Might ought to hold off on building that new north precinct. Soon we can just rename central to North. These ass-clowns did not learn a thing from Fulton County. County wide we could loose 2500 employees and never miss a beat. Walk into one of these recreation centers and count the staff. More than any given PD precinct on any given shift.

Tell me, who is killing Dekalb county?.........anyone?//...anyone??/...Well I'll tell you who it is...the DEMOCRATIC BOC...tax and spend, tax and spend.....The voters apparently like it now ...but what happens when Deklab becomes DETROIT? It's going to happen very soon if things don't change...and soon.

It is time to start privatizing what can be privatized. Sanitation is a joke, they come thru every nieghborhood 4 times a week! Twice for garbage cans, once for yard debris and once for recyclibles. Thats a joke. once a week is all you need and get rid of the yard debris and unless you want to pay extra. You could cut the employees in that dept in half and save on gas, employees, vehicles and paying into that pension that you hate so much. Do you hear me BOC? Thats just one dept, just think if you really wanted to make cuts you have to look and get rid of the less critical employees. Not tax the citizens that you represent and make employees take it in the rear that are essential. Even in essential dsepts, there are cuts that can be made. Democrats just dont get it, it's all about the jos program. Brookhaven next? Tucker? Northlake ? Oakgrove? Decatur to incoporate north of the city? Just a thought, but maybe the future.

I live in South uni DeKalb and my tax bill came in same as the last few years. Of course the actual real dollar appraisal came back $50,000 less than what I paid for it.
Yes I have appealed, however I suspect the appeal process has already been fixed. Curious to see how many appeals get granted....my bet is very few.

TVshooter, appeal it, more tax appeals are granted than you think, the commissioners tell the Tax Assessors to maximize county revenue and they do. The tax appeals board is not controlled by the BOC and staffed with independent DeKalb citizens who know what is going on and don't like seeing the citizens ripped off any more than you. You might want to invest an hours worth of consultation with a reputable DeKalb tax attorney with county tax appeals experience to make sure you are properly prepared with the required documentation. Preparation is every thing in the tax appeals process, if you have the documentation to back your claims, then you will win your case! Good luck!

Long rant on DeKalb's BOC's stupidity to follow!
Hargh!

@Anon 1:05 AM Sanitation is billed as a separate item of $256 per year on the tax bill. I used to be collecetd separately. B putting it on the tax bill as part of the taxes the homeowner can take a Federal tax deduction.

$256 is a pretty fair price, Dunwoody priced it out for an outsource and staid with the County.

Sanitation is one of the few things that seems to work in DKC at a fair price. If they reduced the number of collections per week no money would be saved because the County will not fire employees.

DeKalb's leadership vacuum.
DeKalb government leadership is dysfunctional. Not only is the structure of the leadership in DeKalb government crappy, but collectively the CEO and BOC is not suited for leadership in the current financial disaster that DeKalb has found itself in.
A 26 percent increase in property taxes is a disaster for the citizens and the CEO and BOC has made about every wrong move you can make in the current crises;
Burying the GSU study initiated by Lee May.
Refusing to reorganize and downsize bloated staff and management.
The ill considered early retirement incentive that robbed DeKalb government of 500 of its most effective employees and vested the county with 40 million more in debt with no real cost savings to the county.
The illegal but innovative unpaid holidays that the police successfully fought.
The asinine prolific spending by the CEO and BOC for perks and trips that benefit themselves personally and provide zero value to the county.
The refusal of the CEO and BOC to abide by policies they have enacted to control employee costs,
400-500 dollar a month transportation allowance for the entire CEO staff.
The 60,000 dollars spent on food for the BOC staff last year.
The "golden parachute" termination bonuses provide to Barker and Edwards of the CEO's staff after they royally screwed up.
The 26 percent property tax increase was the white flag of the BOC and CEO collectively surrendering that they are too damn stupid to fix the county's financial disaster that they brought the county to with three big bond issues that the county cannot afford.
The vote for the Bond projects was a joke. All three were voted in at single issue special elections that bypassed the majority of voters because the only ones that vote in "special elections" are the citizens supporting the issue. No more than 25,000 citizens voted in these single issue special elections that are designed to disenfranchise the majority of voters and pass the single issue into law.
Recommendations;
The DeKalb Georgia legislative representatives enact legislation banning single issue special elections that draw less than 10 percent of the registered voters.
That the DeKalb legislative representative introduce a bill to abolish the CEO form of government for DeKalb government and revert to the more successful county manager/commissioner form of government.
That the CEO and BOC collectively get their heads out of their rectums and start working together to reorganize and downsize DeKalb government in a logical process that gives core government functions priority over unnecessary services such as a damn horse farm or an aqua park.
Personally I don't think much will change much until the next election, and even then I don't expect much. DeKalb Government leadership, dominated by a single political party hell bent on providing every necessity for the underprivileged while driving the supporting population into a lower standard of living can only result in more secessions as we saw with the city of Dunwoody.
With the trend in DeKalb leadership to exact disproportionate revenue and provide reduced service to the affluent north and central DeKalb citizens, Brookhaven citizens would be foolish not to abandon ship from a sinking DeKalb government whose leadership seems more intent upon opening the sea-cocks instead of fixing the damn ship.
This is in-fracken'-sanity!
What is the name of the dominant political party in control of DeKalb government that has brought DeKalb citizens to this mess?
Based upon the dominant political parties performance over the last decade and especially the last three years, can anyone state a logical reason to allow them to remain in power and drive DeKalb government into receivership?
KenC
PS. I am heading to the hills tomorrow so don't expect any follow up by me till Friday at the earliest.
Best of luck, mates!

Anon848 I understand that, but like you said, its the county that wont make the right choice, Keep sanitation, but cut back on trips to the same street. not needed. 1 pick up aweek. Half the employees. same pricew. county wins, citizens still get trash picked up.

Incorporating Cities is bad for DeKalb County Police Officers just like it was bad for Fulton County Police Officers. The negative effect of losing tax revenue has a direct effect on our pay.
