Everytime You Ask Yourself If It Can Get Any Worse, It Does

The erosion of our benefits continues. The county has announced it will no longer honor 10 hour employees (meaning the police) with 10 hour holidays.

Beginning labor day 2011 (how appropriate), if you take a holiday, you will only be paid 8 hours, even though we work 10 hour days. You will have to take an additional 2 hours vacation to cover the shortage.

Pretty convenient. We will be forced to burn our vacation time after the county has chosen to reduce the amount of vacation time we can carry over.

The question that hasn't been answered is, if you have to work on a holiday, will you be paid 8 or 10 hours? Any bets?

I wonder if we will get the 8 hours of holiday time and have the 2 remaining hours coded as admin leave, since we work 10 hours?

O.K. so if you work on a holiday, just work 8 hours and then go home. They can figure out who will answer calls for the remaining two hours.

I heard the chief fought hard but was told to kiss off by the HR director.

Suddenly I can't find my ticket book.

I thought out "esteemed" commissioner said that it was important for us to take vacation... I got the impression he was looking out for our mental health.....

Why would they now give us LESS time to keep out mental house in order.

SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!?!?!

Its official, we will lose 2 hrs every holiday which adds up to 20 hrs a year. Thats 2 furlough days. Now the question is how bad will they screw us on our pension? I might be able to accept this if they leave us the hell alone with the pension. I just want to do my time and get out of here. Please dont come on here and start blaming Chief OB. Its not his fault. Stay focused on the enemy, the BOC.

Just curious but, Radio works 12 hrs and Fire works 24 hours. Does this affect them at all? And how convenient that it DOESN'T affect the civilians who ONLY work 8hrs. Good looking out BOC!!

Guys your not seeing the real purpose behind the move to 8 hours holidays. They will more than likely soon be moving the department to 5-2 work weeks. It's a manpower thing in their eyes.

They are just going to keep on keeping on nickel and diming us to death with erosion of pay and benefits.

So be it. I'll get my time back on their dime. With interest! Perhaps that might effect my eval. Really? Whatever.

BOC = Board of CROOKS!!!

"M outta here ASAP, is outta here.. Bye... You know the grass doent have to be greener, just be there, weather its dead grass, brown grass or whatever. Its better then most of the dirt yards on Southside...

Have you idiots ever considered banding together, forgetting petty differences between you, considering yourselves all blue in color and fighting back in a manner that will actually get you results?......... Naw, didn't think so...forget it.

You low-down dirty rotten scoundrels.

I get the priviledge of WORKING 10 hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas this year but hey it aint so bad because I can take a DAY off at my choosing. But now I have to take an additional 2 hours of vacation time for the 10 hours I worked just to take the day?

Tell me....how in the hell does that compute in any normal persons mind?

Sorry for the language but this is some straight up bullshit.

Do you folks in Decatur sit in a corner thinking of ways to screw your public safety employees while eating your free lunches?? Every meeting, social function, or political forum you hear politicians say how important we are...well I'll say it again...bullshit. You're nothing but a bunch of two-bit politicians and I pray that someday, you'll get what you deserve!!!

This is a lost cause. Actually ...its been a lost cause.

The only thing really left to do is....quit.

Anonymous said...

can you please post the hr directors email address so we can start emailing her about how we feel about this.

I hope all of you realize with the pension increase, insurance scam, shorting you of hours, etc that you barley bring home over minimum wage. Go work for an honest community and your take home will be much more, even if you have 15 + years with Dekalb. Sad but true...

Anonymous said...

And you keep working for Dekalb why????

Seriously, there are MUCH better agencies in the metro area to work for, some, like Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Lawrenceville, Johns Creek, Atlanta, Cherokee, etc will pay you for your experiance.
Alpharetta's MINIMUM pay for a master officer (7 years with APD) is 72,000$ with a take home.

There's better out there....and a lot of chiefs would love to talk to good Dekalb officers who have been screwed year after year.

Anyone ever heard of the FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT? Just because the county does and says this, that , and the other, doesn't mean its legal.

Federal Court here we come !!!

Anonymous said...

So does this mean that when we use a vacation day or sick day we we will only be docked 8 hours. Try and implement this and the law suits will be flying.

Anonymous said...

Where is the official notice to employees of this?

Anonymous said...

Damn.... I was just getting my team on an even keel and they were starting to enjoy work again....

You commissioners sure make being a supervisor tough....

Anonymous said...

And radio works 12-hours shifts.....I can only imagine how that is going to go over with the operators...........

Anonymous said...

Doesn't sound legal to me...We are either 10 hr. employees or 8.5 hr. employees!! Which is it? Doesn't seem like they should have it both ways....

Anonymous said...

How about it FOP?

Anonymous said...

I anon 1013 we are on the same page!

Anonymous said...

Wouldn't really matter any way we all take care of our own when it comes to hours we know how to manipulate the system and dont say it doesn't happen

Has anyone actually seen a memo or letter that spells out exactly what the County is going to do? The answer is no
The Chief may have had conversations with HR, but to the best of my knowledge and asking some questions at 1300 Commerce this is a lot of crap.
The wording was changed from unpaid holidays to furlough days specificaly to address this issue.
There is discussion about shutting the County down before or after holidays to avoid the very issue you are all bitching about. It is the CEO and Joel who keep refferring to unpaid holidays.
Your rumor mill is not the best source of facts.

I am so tired of the BOC walking over and around Chief Obrien. We are truely wittnessing what may be the last of what we all once knew as Dekalb County.

Anonymous said...

Agreee or not, but the BOC needs to consider a 82.5 retirement next summer for all 25 year and up workers, reduce the county payroll and never replace the workers when they are done. And then give back to the remaining workers their merit increases and promotional raises that have been taken away;

Here's some WORSE for you supervisors. Software updates will soon allow majors with no life (East) to view the pending call list from their Blackberrys thus inquiring to the Sgts and Lts why a call is pending.

Anonymous said...

I thank god I left that dump of department everyday. I have doubled my salary, I get raises every year, I have a take home car, a great retirement , I even get a freaking 500 bonus around Christmas. When I go into food establishments waiters come up to me and say " you don't have to pay one of our customers just payed for your meal " . These great agencies like Alpharetta , dunwoody, sandy springs, johns creek , Roswell are finishing up there yearly budgets which means most likely are trying to add more officers. Time to wise up and leave .

Dekalb County Government is run by the close friends of the Obama whitehouse bunch.

"say no more" is the true answer.

Union! Union! Union! Billboards, demonstrations at county commission meetings, fire up all neighborhood associations and watches, demand recalls on commissioners, court injunctions, law suits naming commissioners personally and individually, just look around everywhere you look violations of public trust, discrimination, age race, gender.....government waste and gross mismanagement!!!! Fight Fight fight, you won't get a thing from this commission without fighting for it!!!!

2. Work additional hours during the remainder of the work week to compensate for any shortages. Remember the objective is a minimum of 40 hours per work week fo full-time employees.

Just damn.... all units be en route to the precinct..... yeah, I'm aware that we still have two hours.... but it's a holiday and the county doesn't want to pay for a ten hour shift.

Hey Anon July 19, 2011 11:35 PM,

Why should this being repeated direct from a division chief in person just be a rumor?

Perhaps your "facts" are rumor.

So I work 10 hours on a holiday, I am taken away from my family for 10 hours, a standard work day for me, but if I choose to take that holiday later on down the line, I don't get credit for the FULL HOLIDAY DAY that I worked? What the fuck is wrong with these people in Decatur? Yet again, the peons are bing shit on, and the people at the top are not affected.

Anonymous said...

How does this work for the K9 Handlers that work 8hrs and then use the other 2hrs for taking care of there beloved dog???

Anonymous said...

Your burning time fellas. Polish up your resume, start running again, look before you leap....but by all means, make your plans to get the hell out of this soon to be called............... "losers job".

Anonymous said...

This is the same as work for no pay. In other words, illegal.

Javier Darkholer said...

So if I get sick the last two hours, I still cant take sick time? I guess I will need a doctors note.

Hate it for radio and fire

Anonymous said...

It took all my training and every grain of professionalism to resist the temptation to send a very "quick and smart ass response " back to Ms. Grayson.

Here email was par for the course when it comes to both personnel and Risk Management.

I think I would like to have just responded with a simple " Really? ..... only 8 hours in exchange for protecting your ass and the people of Dekalb for ten hours on a holiday?"

I call for a ticket slow down!

just Plain Wrong said...

Now, since personnel will only credit my holiday for 8 hours, can I just take those two hours off when I work a holiday? Instead of coming in to roll call, I'll stay home with my family ON the holiday ....

Ticket?... what ticket?.... I have a stack of Warnings!

Anonymous said...

"Union! Union! Union! Billboards, demonstrations........"

It will never happen. Ya'll aint got the gonads.

Anonymous said...

Lack of union isn't about gonads, its about not being able to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement. You do know Georgia is a right to work state???? Why do you think that historically wages and benefits were lower here and the entire south for that matter.
