Morale Continues To Plummet

We have lost approximately 130 officers through attrition for the year.

Great work DeKalb Board of Commissioners! Taxpayers should feel real safe.

I was one of the ones lost... No regrets at all...Life is good but much better after Dekalb.I'm real sorry for my friends that are still working there...The grass is so green over here it almost looks like gold... To Anon 11:18 "Holler"..."M Gone and Happy"

I heard some are comming back.

Just wait until after the holidays. You haven't seen ANYTHING yet.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile get ready to be VERY flexible with the new holiday schedule about to come out. Hope you don't mind not only working for free on holidays but dropping everything at a moments notice to cater to various specials and political agendas to make the powers that be look competent.

Anonymous said...

And you wonder why tax payers want their own city with its own police force.

Anonymous said...

Most of the officers that have left our precinct were forced out for disciplinary reasons.

No need for large word.

Morale.

Don't _

_ means Does not exist

As long as Sharon Barnes-Sutton feels safe at a $500 a night hotel, the rest of the taxpayers will feel safe as well (a probable defense from her newly acquired legal team payed for with taxpayer money- I know I sleep better at night knowing that Im not a DeKalb County tax payer!)

What a friggin joke!

Jerry Myer Jackson...Where are you baby?!

I would say in another few years this department will be at the lowest of all in the state.

They said we were the best at one time.

I guess CEO's play a major role in it's down fall.

Can I say it's the changing of the guard?

Your right it's all about a paycheck today. There is no honor among us anymore. Who cares about this place, I don't live in this county.

To anon 4:59, you're right. I hear at the first of the year the plan is to really f--- the employees over.

Some of the 130 that are gone, were fired. If you heard about some of the stuff they did, you would have fired them too. Gone are the days when past chiefs would turn a blind eye to the behavior simply because the officer attended the same church as someone in the upper command staff.

Chief O'Brien has tried to turn this place around. He can fire the turds and has done so. Too bad the BOC won't support him to make the other changes that are needed to keep officers here. The BOC can't seem to understand the FACT that, if you have a great police department you can attract new businesses and residents. The current mindset of the BOC appears to put the police at the same level as Sanitation, Water and Sewer, and Roads and Drainage. Yes, you do need those other departments, but I ask the BOC, "Does Water and Sewer respond when you have a thug creeping around your home at 2:00am, does Roads and Drainage come out and check the thugs hanging outside of a business...?" You can fairly easily replace a worker in those other departments. You can't easily replace a trained and motivated police officer. The turn around time is at least 18 months to get a new officer up to speed. If the BOC really wants to turn this county around then they must put public safety as priority one and separate public safety from the actions that they put on all the other departments. This county is on the move to having great senior centers and rec centers for the residents, it's just too bad no one will go to the centers, because the BOC put public safety at the bottom of their "to do list".

To: Anon October 30, 2011 9:15 AM. O'Brien is a great guys and was great and fair when he was in I.A. That having been said, he has done nothing, nada, shit, dodo, how else can it be said, to help the Police Dept. Do you know why he has done nothing??? Becuase he cant. He has a title with no power... Can you say Ellis or Wiz please.... One think he has done is built up time as being Chief. This means when the pension doubles next year, he will retire and get 82 % of $140,000. But I say why not get what you can before leaving this shit hole... That is all he has done.. Sorry if I hurt you or his feeling.......

Don't Leave Dekalb!

Life is on the way!

You will see !

You know what is sad?

All of the people who have left over the years. Good guys and gals that Dekalb trained and ultimately lost to other agencies.

I could rattle off 20+ people who have moved on......they weren't fired, or run off but rather quit. Plain old quit and moved on. Why? Because they saw the writing on the wall. They saw it was a lost cause.

You have a BOC who doesn't recognize this. A BOC who refuses to see the err in their ways. And who's left? Who's running the PD now? The ones who are stuck. The ones who cant find anything else to do or cant find anywhere else to go. The losers.

Good luck with it Dekalb BOC! It will only get worse for those who remain. New Orleans will look like a cake walk compared to Dekalb.

I thought Spanky went to work for McDonough PD.

Low Morale
Until the BOC does more than just say they are for public safety, morale will continue to tank. My suggestion to the Chief. Fight for better pay for the men on the street; completely change the uniforms to modern colors. The drab grey looks nothing like an officer demanding a citizens undivided attention. The currnt color combo wouldn't even suit a contract guard service. There are a half dozen guard services eith better looking uniforms.

I left years ago. I was on the tail end of when Dekalb WAS great. Still have great memories of awesome chases and arrest and working with the best cops to ever hit the streets. But they all left about the same time I did. Dekalb County is nothing but a graveyard of what once was.

"Fight for better pay for the men on the street;"
Really??? Last I checked we were a department consisting of men and women in uniform. You are showing your true colors by making that statement. Sad... It's not 1960 anymore...let me people go.

Anonymous said...

The county is getting hosed on the actuary studies for health insurance by trying to lump all employees in one demographic. Can the county consultant present plan cost to the commission after dividing the employees up into work groups; publice safety, admon, utilites,et al? I think we might find it finicially advantageous to a couple of the groups. Other public safety agencies have extremely similar health plans covering a samller number of people for significantly less cost to their government and employees.

Fight for better pay? You should go to Alpharetta....where an MPO is paid 71,000 minimum....with a take home car.

Anonymous said...

Spanky did go to McDonough PD and is doing well. Words is, a good place to work. If perps lie on statement forms, are charged with Felony. Unlike in Dekalb. He has a nice take home, lives 5 minutes away and has gotten a pay increase already... Most important thing was, he got all his vac and holiday pay when he left. All 560 hours... A friend of Sarge Spanky and wished he never left....

News flash the city of Milton has 3-5 openings..Sandy Springs has a couple or at least thats what they said when to folks who are in the Ga Piedmont Tech College Police Academy. City of Chamblee has an opening maybe. This is what I have heard froma few people call if you are interested....

Anonymous said...

It would be a refreshing change to wear the uniform of a WINNING team I must say.

Anonymous said...

So if you can start somewhere new and have more take-home pay without the ridiculous pension and insurance payments other departments don't have then why does ANYONE stay at Dekalb? For the extra risk and liability? No one will be able to afford to continue to contribute to the old pension so I'll have to assume it is laziness on their part. Freeze what you have and leave is the only sensible solution at this point.

Well, well, well, oh how the chickens are coming home to roost.

I do believe that I've been saying this for more than a year now over and over, over. This is all our fault. ..(well not the small half dozen that have been with me).... but Yeah you heard me right. It's every single ass that wears the DKPD badge.... we can get on this blog and bitch, and bitch, and bitch about how we're being screwed but when the time comes to carry your sorry asses to the BOC meetings you find every freakin excuse you can to explain why you couldn't go and stand united and show up in force....get up there and speak to the chosen ones for a right of passage....

Let me just say that I've been present....waiting to see my team mates show up....and every single month it's a freakin NO SHOW!!!! Except for the half dozen few that are with me.....LISTEN, !!What in the hell is wrong with you people, do you honestly think that out of sight is out of mind and that your absence at these BOC meetings is some how going to work in your favor.... STOP you freakin bitchin for once and get involved and do something to change this .... Instead of hiding behind your computer monitors spilling your hate.

If you guys and gals are as concerned as you seem to be here on this blog then where in the hell are all the warm bodies when its time for a BOC meeting....where, oh where .... I know exactly where, you are all sitting on your asses waiting for someone else to fall on their sword...

All I can say is this, what is happening to all of us is exactly what we deserve, and its for a lack of being involved.... PERIOD!!

STOP the Bitchin, and GET YOUR ASSES TO these meetings!!!!!

A handfull of officers won't make that much of an impression on the BOC. How about allowing a high ranking official from the FOP Lodge appear and speak to the Board on behalf of the whole department?

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:33,

You're a genesis!

Anonymous said...

Lone Ranger in case you haven't noticed people are busy looking for avenues (other employment) off this sinking ship and not interested in watching the BOC ignore them as in the past. You're not the prophet you believe yourself to be. Everyone saw the writing on the wall and have been making plans for themselves and careers instead of believing if we only show up to BOC meetings they'll feel sorry for us and cater to our needs. Grow up, realize what the reality of Dekalb County is, and move on yourself. Or you can just keep thinking you and Tanto are just simply smarter than everyone else until you're the only one left at DKPD.

Anonymous said...

Lone Ranger, I know it sucks probably being vested and having no where to turn or go but the younger generation who have some common "cents" (pun intended) left in them probably dont give a crap about the BOC meetings any more and are probably spending their valuble time looking for employment else where be it in the State of Georgia or another state. Sorry that you are stuck here in this $%*thole, but give up your Superman ideas because we arent going to show up to the BOC meetings.

Anonymous said...

I've been to the BOC meetings when "all hands on deck" was called.... Fire, EMS, Police and Sanitation were there....know what....... the BOC still voted AGAINST US. Done wasting my time...now I'll vote with my feet..... the county has me tied till I hit ten years but, the bonds are gone in short order.

I think the Exodus you are about to see will make even Moses envious.

And BOC take your employee picnic invitations and shove it. Im tired of seeing emails of you begging for County volunteers to cook the damn meal for ya. Cant wait to see Commissioner Watsons special at Doraville on the 12th where once again we have been called out to work free of charge for the politicians. My family would like to spend time with them on a weekend now and then especially when we are screwed out of holiday pay.

Lone Ranger said...

WOW!!!!, I sure got told. The one thing that still bewilders me is if you all are so freakin ready to go and you got somewhere else to be then why, ohhh why in the hell are you on the blog bitchin about what you don't have or what you're about to lose...can any of you explain that to me and Tonto....or is it you truly don't have any where to go but you're just too lazy to fight for what you do have...

I hear alot of freakin talk of jumping off this sinking ship but I sure haven't seen any life boats or life preservers go over the railing yet.

Perhaps its just all a bunch of smoke and mirrors... we officers are gonna threaten the BOC that we're gonna just quit and leave them high and dry....yea that will show'em...we'll just threatin them with resignations.....

Hey, guess what smart asses..haven't seen any of you leave...threats are an empty waste of time, and you know it. If you do intend to go then freakin go already and stop telling us all....hey I'm gonna just quit!!!

masHey Lone Ranger....... who's side are you on ?? Many have left for better departments and many are looking to bail out. Happiness is looking in your rear view mirror and seeing DeKalb County fade into the distance.

Anonymous said...

Lone Ranger, Im not bitching Im just looking for employment else where. Bitching does nothing its too late for Dekalb County. Good luck to you I feel very very sorry for you and your family, hopefully you can find a way out.

Ten and Out said...

Why am I still here?..... I'm still here because the magic ten year mark is too close to make leaving a logical action. I can stick it out for a few years to better my retirement options.

After ten.......

Lone Ranger said...

Oh by the way to you guys who question what side Tonto & I are on...I'm on the side who is ready to fight to retain what little we have left and to try and get back what's already been taken....

To the dumb asses that keep commenting on officers that are leaving for greener fields...the attrition rates for officers leaving are no more than they've been in the 20 yrs I've been an officer in this dept. Actually I had the numbers pulled and compared them to numbers from 5, 10 & 15 yrs ago...we're actually a little below the average. So stuff that down your throat and blow it out your azz.

We have no more people leaving here than we've ever had in the past, so stop the smoke & mirror threats and find your freakin balls and get behind something you believe in. No one wants a yellow bellied coward on their team...Just ask yourselves this small tidbit...Would Derwin Brown tuck tail and run?....Hell no, he'd be at the front leading the charge...
