Can We Stay Out Of The News, Just One Day?

By Alexis Stevens

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

When a young boy found a wallet inside the restroom of Cobb County bowling alley, he handed it to his aunt. That woman then gave the wallet to her husband.

But when that man, Akii Isaac Myers, got the wallet, he didn't try to find its owner, police said. Instead, he took $500 out and the owner's identification, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Myers then handed the cash to his wife before turning the wallet in to bowling alley employees, police said.

The July 29 act was caught on surveillance cameras at the bowling alley and Myers later confessed, the warrant states.

The story doesn't end there. Myers was a DeKalb County police officer when he allegedly stole a stranger's money. Cobb investigators informed DeKalb County police about the theft investigation on Aug. 1, according to a spokeswoman for DeKalb police. The following day, Myers resigned from the department.

"Myers was off duty and on military leave from the department when the alleged incident occurred," DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News.

Myers, of Marietta, turned himself in Aug. 3 and was charged with theft by taking, a misdemeanor, Cobb County jail records show. He was released the following day after posting $1,000 bond.

On Monday, an arrest warrant was secured for Myers's wife, Laprencilla Malisa Myers, on the same charge of theft by taking. She had not been arrested late Thursday evening.

So so very sad and discouraging to me that the rewards for being in law enforcement have become second place to survival. The truth is though, that he didn't just steal $500. He stole trust. He stole confidence from us in the very people we expect and hope will look out for us. I'm sad that you will have to deal with the consequences of officers like this. Nevertheless, I still have the utmost respect for DKPD, and appreciate all the good things you do, and hope that incidents like this don't overshadow that fact with the general public. Stay safe.

Equally disturbing is the fact that this guy is still in the military. Not only is DeKalb suffering from having such a person as a sworn police officer, but, our Country suffers as well having such a person - who apparently has no honor - wearing our Country's uniform. Either way, sad ending to his career...over 500 bucks.

This is why DCPD needs a Police Task Force. Cops are getting into shit about the same amount as crooks........How can tell the difference?

Anonymous said...

The crooks are starting from upstairs and trickling down to the line level Officers. Why is it that only the line level Officers that are doing wrong being the only ones punished? There is a serious problem here and nothing is being done about it. I have tried and tried to stay with this Department, but I am going to go else where. Is the new unit in IA investigating them to? NO!

There is no trust no loyalty......after getting more information on this story the news falsely reported a good portion of it he never went back to the alley to get the video......and the money was actually originally given to the young boy who found it......then returned to a detective handling the case.....everything is not always as it seems....I just pray for both families in this situation....

Anonymous said...

Send that new IA unit after s*#tbags like that! Clean up our damn department once and for all. Do whate4ver you have to do. Pull out all the stops and use all the resources. Was he a Bolton hire? It's just a wild guess.

Its not a sad ending to his career... It a great ending... I hope he gets time...He's a peice of shit and so is his wife. He should never have been an offcer from the first place... I hope he gtes a dishonorable discharge from the service also. God Im so glad that someone told me if I didnt like it here to leave. Well I did. " M Gone and Happy"

Damn....just damn...years in military and law enforcement and.he threw it all away over $500.

Meyers was a veteran and should of known better. We can't blame this on recruiting standards, from what I have seen in the news, the Bolton recruits have managed to mostly stay out of trouble when compared to those that have been getting themselves into trouble over the last year or so.
Collectively they deserve commendation for staying out of trouble and out of the news.
Well done! I am proud of you, guys and gals!
Most of the officers getting in trouble and making the headlines are 10-20 year veterans that should know better and let emotions get the best of them. A few like Don Franks were mentored by the pro's and naturally fell into corruption.
DeKalb government is offering extremely poor role-models to their employees and police officers.
Sidney Dorsey, Vernon Jones, Sherry Sutton/Barnes, Stan Watson, Terrel Bolton, Richard Stognar and Joe Stone all come to mind as role models presented to the citizens, employees and officers.
No wonder DeKalb is fracked up!
My next statement is not politically correct nor intended to be. If you are easily offended then go somewhere else.
Could there possibly be a cultural characteristic that is increasing the incidence of employees and officers being arrested?
I am not talking race, but could it be that our culture now accepts unethical or criminal behavior without questioning it? Or that some of our institutions are teaching the poor behavior and decisions manifested over the last year?
Some food for thought after a couple of beers.
Best of luck guys and gals!

Have any of you actually spoken to the officer about the incident........please comment.......if you have worked with him and actually know him ask him about it......what was he thinking......was he a bad officer.....or a bad military guy was there something that could have forecasted this or was this just a bad judgement.......a cultural characteristic of sorts?????

Anonymous said...

Hold up , isn't he a SWAT member lol?????? Damn

Anonymous said...

When you mention dirtbags be sure you mention THOMAS BROWN Dekalb County Sheriff. He allows KK Jones to work there and inject himself into a legal arrest and confinement. That is if the story on the blog is true.

= In reference to the cultural aspect I seem to remember Perry Chandler caught on camera and a few others from the good ol days. There were fewer crooked cops back then but we still had a few.

veteran cop? hes from the 80's thats all I'm saying. I have never worked with him and I dont know him. Always think someone is watching. Im not judging him just because of the news story, but if enough is true that got him j1ed. cops from the 80's are dropping like flies

Just goes to show you...after 12 years of no pay increase...or even a cost of living increase......they need to bring the your yearly eveal back into place!!
You get out here..hump calls..amke arrest..write tickets.. and get a 3.o or higher...then you get a cost of living or or a little more in your check.....the ones here to collect a paycheck.....they don't get squat.....let the Sgt.'s and Lt.'s keep records...just in case the low lifes try and sue the county...they can come back with your daily p/o sheets and show you didn't do shit to earn it.....now the good ol boy system would be out the window due to I.A. finailly being the governing authorithy on confirming the information.......hell what am I saying.....that makes to much sense.

Maybe he took the money because he saw a quick way out....as wrong as it is......maybe we need to look at the quality of life the county provides for us besides a job.

12 years since I've scene a cost of living increase in our checks....and food is going up 5% NEXT YEAR...due to drought....and we hear that pension contributions are going up again!!!!....

Yeah...it was wrong from the begining....no doubt....but can you see the seed that may have been in his eyes from what he is not getting at work????

Granted....we could go on and on about this...pro's and con's....I hope all is well with his family ...(if he has one).
Just food for thought!

Couple things to do,,either post your resume and wait for a call,, go to school to touch up on those skills,,shut up and wait out your time,,but at the end of the day you still have to write tickets and answer calls. The higher ups stopped giving a heck back long ago about the time the white lady CEO was here.

All these post and he hasn't been proven guilty in court yet......just goes to show how you " OFFICERS" stick together.....it shows why dekalb county is so low on the totem pole yall don't stick together.......we have incidents with our officer too but you don't see it on the news and then for you all to be working with each other everyday does your partner really have your back or are they sitting and waiting for you to mess up so they can go tell the world that they were standing right there when you did it.......dekalb is not loyal to its officers so I don't blame the 100s of officers for leaving as always I ride for every fallen officer and pray for your safety on the streets....1/*

Good point anon 10:28, I had a fairly good ride as a geek with the county until the '97 Price/waterhouse ripoff. After that, I knew I was being screwed in a variety of ways. The pension was the only reason I was sticking around, and for the new guys that's not available anymore.
I dabbled a bit in network security, as I was a network engineer and enjoyed doing different stuff that was slightly out of my job description. Network security is primarily a desk job 70-80 percent of the time, with some detective work figuring out whats going down. If you enjoy working with computers and the Internet, enjoy doing detective work you might want to consider a career in network security. The pay is good except at DeKalb government, and the its an expanding market thanks to the Chinese and Russians. DeKalb tech has several programs that result in a network security certification that will give you a entry level job at about 65 grand and up, and in several years you would be making at least 80 grand.
Its an exciting field, and for any of you detectives out there interested, a way to get out of this mess called DeKalb County government.
Best of luck, guys and gals!

Anon 7:44 you say its been 12 years since you have had a raise? My last one was 4 years ago, you also get a longevity raise up to twenty years. Its not much but please don't bend the facts to make an argument. Mr.Ken C it seems you have some issues with some people in your past. Please seek some professional help so that you can move on. You will feel so much better, life is to short to harbor bad feelings. As far as the bad officers do us all a favor and just leave and save us the embarrassment.

There is one thing that DeKalb has that you will not find anywhere else. The hardest street training in Georgia.

Annon 1206;

I see your real quick to pull the trigger....guess that 12 year degree in my pocket does not mean anything until you have to come see me on admin. leave.

Just glad your "M Gone and Happy"....elsewhere.

@11:01 im not turning things around at all nor do I agree with stealing of any kind. I assure you the next pair of cuffs, road vest or even phone charger that go missing i'll be making a formal complaint. All i'm saying is he made the bed now he must lay in it. It doesn't take ppl who hide behind a screen to add their two cents. I personally think the county should purge the system of all those who don't uphold the badge! This blog just provides a platform for public criticism which is not cool. #JustMyOpinion

@7:45 I assure you whoever these cowards are would not say any of this to him! Myers is a good dude and all though I dont agree with his actions I still trust him out here on these streets. This blog so hypocritical cause their was a bunch of bootlicking when it can to Kaulbach. She was a good person as well but she messed up. Should she have lost her job? Yes. She should have....Stop judging with your emotions ppl!

The test of character is not what one does in public but, what one does when he or she is alone and no one is watching.

Sounds like we have a failed test on that date..... one's reputation in priceless and difficult to regain once lost. It should be guarded and defended.

Is that even English? Dear God, no wonder why we have so many issues. I digress, Yes I would say exactly what I thought of him to his face after this incident. Do the words Oath of Office mean anything anymore. Don't bother to spout off about "brothers in blue" etc... The bottom line once you cross the line you are no longer my brother. I fully understand we sometimes stray up to that line but I have never crossed it and I feel that once you do cross it, you are no longer fit to serve. Just saying.

Anonymous said...

Why wouldnt we say it to his face? Are we supposed to be afraid of him assaulting us? Doesn't he have enough problems already? Ask him if in front of headquarters tomorrow at noon works for him.

M Gone and Happy - You are the man. You did your time, ran the gauntlet in DeKalb and earned the right to post here. Period.

"Im wonder if yall"

What an amazing command of the English language you have! This officer embarrasses himself and his department, then idiots like you embarrass him more by defending him with your piss poor grasp of the English language and you ghetto logic.

4:37......tough guy hiding behind the internet.....they posted his address if you feel that strongly about it go to his house.....just let me know when so I can put it on youtube.....you sound like one of those officers that hide behind the badge knowing the radio is your best friend and first line of defense

Th these 2 people I know very well and are great people. 2 people who in fact are just that .. People. We all make mistakes. All of you people commenting and ridiculing people who get caught, but how many of you have done something in the dark? I'll wait. ..... You people are the cowards in my eyes hiding behind anonymous profiles commenting about other people's actions when you may just be seeing a reflection of yourself. you may just be that "thief" or "liar" "untrustworthy" person that you are so gung ho on pointing out the flaws of others.you don't know what type of situation led this event to occur So take your godly hats off and remember you are not perfect thank you.
