Wild Shoot Out In North Precinct

By Fran Jeffries

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"An off-duty police officer killed a gunman who shot and injured four people inside a DeKalb County bar Saturday night, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Police said the gunman, whose identity has not been released, opened fire at the Trebol Billiards Bar on Buford Highway around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after some sort of argument, Channel 2 reports.

The off-duty officer who shot the alleged gunman was working security at the bar when the argument broke out. The officer called for backup. A second officer arrived just as one of the patrons involved in the argument started to fire a gun, police said.

One of the officers shot and killed the man, but not before the man shot four patrons. The injured people were taken to the hospital".

As bert use to say.......
Best training in the south, I concur. A good way to save tax dollars.....no trial.

One of these licensed pool halls that is operating as a night club. Just glad the good guys ended up on winning side. This is bound to happen when you let these places run wild. Watch what Brookhaven does with these crime holes when they take over. Doraville doesn't allow any of these night club establishments and you can see the difference. Our officers need to watch their backs because these club owners don't want to pay for a sufficient number of officers to be safe. It puts us in greater danger while working part times. This place has had issues in the past.

How many of the three injured are illegal aliens? Step up and work a few more hours to pay for their medical bills at Grady. Next they will sue the officers for not responding quickly enough. Just wait and see. Come on brass get out of these club owners pockets and enforce the laws and ordinances. These places are overcrowded routinely, open and serving past posted hours, operating under the wrong permits, etc. Most of the servers are not legal yet alone licensed by DPD. Inadequate security and only serving alcohol is a ticking time bomb. This particular place was denied the SLUP permit to operate as a night club. North has been out there many times before and tried to enforce the rules but receives resistance from above when pushing too hard. Can name you ten other establishments in the same vicinity that are just as shady. What is it gonna take to stand up and refuse these corrupt club owners offers and enforce our rules and regs. PS glad our people are all o.k. Get ready for the b.s. that you will have to endure.

Oh Lordy, he was right! Dancing in the pool halls has led to this! Repent!! And thou shall be saved! Damn you, Kevin Bacon and your wicked ways!

@3:53 and 4:43..Give the whining a break. This can and does happen other places. We need to be congratulating this north precinct officer for stepping up, facing the danger, trusting his training and getting the job done. Damn good work.

Great response, the officer saved lives and should be considered a HERO.........

Speaking of North. All the Chiefs, including Chief OB were working a part time job this morning at the road race for $40 an hour. Wow! How freaking selfish can you be? So a Chief making $140,000 a year works a part time job instead of letting a patrolman, who makes $40,000 a year, work it? How pathetic can this place get?

this was an active shooter that got taken out by an outstanding officer who not only did his job, but did it well. i am proud to work next to officers of this caliber...also, all whining aside, this department affords some outstanding training opportunities, if you are willing to put in the time and effort to take advantage of it...all told, all the good guys went home safe, and thats all that matters (to me). great job, way to go!

A shootout in the North precinct this week.Wow thats pretty scary. All they need is 5 more shootings and they will be half of South Precincts total. But shootings happen everyday in South Precinct, guess thats why they never make the news......just saying.

Anon 7:28,
So let me get this right. The North officer did an outstanding job and without a doubt saved lives. No Chief showed up at the scene to tell the officer 'good job,' but they all showed up at North to work a part time job. Unbelievable!

Look at the bright side: we have soooo many officers that we could send some to the Democrat Convention in North Carolina this week (no, we didn't send any to the Republican National Convention because we didn't have the manpower). I am glad that we have the staffing to attend such an event...I mean, events in North Carolina impact us so much...just sayin'

Well done to the officer involved. As others have said, for police and fire personnel, the county does offer some excellent training opportunities. I hope you guys and gals take full advantage of them and move on to better employment opportunities.
One last thing. The individual departments training budgets have been slashed drastically over the last decade or so. My old department IT has been particularly abusive to employees seeking technical training to remain current with rapidly evolving technology. Money is always available to send management to seminars and conferences, but never enough money to train the employees resulting in poor service, incompetent employees, and poor decisions. The best training I received I had to do on my own time with no compensation.
To IT management, frack-off! (Why did I never receive a termination interview after I retired?)
Best of luck guys and gals!

Let me get you a hanky for that blubbering comment. Who gives a sh-- that the chiefs were working an extra job. You act like extra jobs are just for officers and no one else. Times are tough for everyone and not just yourself. The world does not revolve around you. Instead of picking at the chiefs, why don't you go to the source that set up the job and complain to them.

The north officer stepped up to the plate and faced the situation head on. Good training!

Well, lets address a couple of things

Officer goes home safely and saves lives and prevents further injuries. Well done. Thank God

To the poster commenting on the number of shootings in North Pct vs South Pct; Give it a break..This was an officer involved shooting. They all get covered. As far as citizens shooting other citizens, well that's another topic all together which is not necessary to get into here and now.

And lastly, we all know why we didn't send anyone to the Republican convention. Most working here want another 4 years of Mr. Obama.

You must be one of our great leaders who worked that detail. The posters is exactly correct. It is selfish, unethical, and demonstrates a lack of leadership for chiefs to work part times. Why do you think intelligent and highly respected police departments (LAPD, NYPD) have policies prohibiting this?

Anonymous said...

That's your whole case for chiefs not working part time jobs? If they work at a club, vice won't investigate that club? Are any chiefs working at clubs?

Anonymous said...

Back to the original issue, although no chiefs noticed, no CEO/BOC noticed, no media noticed and a portion of this department woudl rather gripe than notice. Officer involved I noticed. You saved lives, you put fear aside and relied on your training and faced down the danger. GREAT WORK !!!!!

First off, good job to the North Officer who performed his duty admirably.

Secondly, Lieutenant and up should not work extra jobs because they are exempt, management employees. Its a huge conflict of interest.

Thirdly, The average captian in this department makes between $80,000 to $90,000 a year. According to the county web site a new officer makes $38,700 a year (with a college degree). The way things are now, if a new officer rises to the rank of catpain his salary will rise 25% (5% times 5 promotions). This means that new officers today will be making about $48,375 a year if they rise to the rank of captain. Think about that the next time your captain complains about the number of tickets you're writing.

Anonymous said...

Anon 630........you may want to rethink your math. It's a 5% pay raise on top of each promotion. Not 25% of the $38K amount.

Anonymous said...

Anon 12:38 you're right. I thought of that after I made my post and apologize for my error. If you add 5% in steps the total is $49,392 a year (a huge difference I know). However, the point of the post was to show that the projected pay for a new officer in this department is about45% less than a current officer in the highest merit protected rank. There is talk about an accross the board pay cut. If you ask me the county has already done it. Thats not even counting the furlough days, pension increases, and health insruance increases.
