More County Territory Lost To A City

Doraville swallows up islands abutting Dunwoody and includes Friday's Plaza and Oasis Goodtime Emporium

Several months ago Governor Deal signed Senate Bill 532, which expanded the City of Doraville's borders by roughly a half square mile on January 1, 2013.  As featured in the map above, the areas situated to the east and west of Doraville’s northern point, have existed as islands of incorporated DeKalb County since the City of Dunwoody formed in 2008.  This annexation did not require a vote unlike the 2008 attempt which included a larger Southern area and failed.

Surrounded on all sides by the City’s existing borders and the City of Dunwoody, the western area includes the old Fridays Plaza and the Van Fleet Circle and Ridgway Drive residential neighborhoods west of Peachtree Boulevard.  This annexation also directly affected the Texaco Station on the Dunwoody side of PIB at Tilly Mill which was within unincorporated DeKalb, but now will be governed and paroled by the City of Doraville.

Across Peachtree Industrial Blvd, is the Tilly Mill Crossing shopping center (old Friday's Plaza) and the Oasis Goodtime Emporium which was also transferred over to Doraville which necessitated them to make numerous ordinance changes on sexually oriented businesses and where those types of businesses should be allowed to be located.

Based on my cursory reading of the ordinance passed just weeks ago, it appears that the Oasis may be allowed in a M-2 heavy manufacturing district (page 94)  which seems very different than the commercial district it currently appears to be zoned for?

I haven't talked to Doraville Councilwoman Pam Fleming in a while but I can tell you that she will fight hard to turn the Friday's Plaza into a "Family oriented shopping center".  In fact, you can read her own words and watch her in a video I taped where she fought against another nightclub going into that location.

I am very glad that this annexation went through and it will be interesting to watch what the City of Doraville does with this island where little oversight was given in the past and then see what happens near Friday's Plaza as that area has so much unrealized potential.

I just feel dirty when I go through DeKalb County. I avoid it when at all possible. They should hurry up and get incorporated by more cities so they can clean it up and make it livable again.

Dekalb continues to become irrelevant.

Stonecrest Mall is about to be a flea market ala Glenwood I-285. Why can't these people get it together?

Watch how long it takes Doraville to cleanup the problems plaguing that area. For example an illegal mosque on Woodwin, drugs being run out of a pool hall in Fridays Plaza, another illegal nightclub in Fridays Plaza, the list goes on and on. Keep up the fine leadership DeKalb politicians and see just how much you can possibly lose. This area never has a DeKalb unit assigned to cover the territory. Go by there and see if you don't see Doraville units patrolling.

Dekalb PD never patrolled the area and the response times were horrible. Glad to see it changing.

Speaking of "sexually oriented businesses", maybe Doraville will shut down the Golden Touch Spa too. It's amazing how these brothels stay open in plain sight while the county supposedly enacted ordinances or laws a few years ago that was supposed to outlaw them.

Is there anything left of North Precinct?

Dekalb Police were always quick to respond...thanks for your service.

Golden Touch is already on Doraville's radar. The golden touch is definitely offered there. Look at Dunwoody Glen Apts. ( formerly NorthChase ) Within a year of Dunwoody taking over they remodeled, added security, cleaned up the crime and hired Dunwoody officers to keep watch. Used to be a sh** hole and now creates very little problems. What did they do that DeKalb wasn't able to do? They hold the owners responsible and forced them to manage their properties.

uh i patrol that area regularly, response times are good, and there are no drugs going out of legends, its gambling, and josephine isnt illegal, all their permits are up to date, and the mosque isnt illegal either...the drugs are up at the shell station and the casa blanca nightclub, and along winters chapel...and oh yeah, on the other side of PIB in dunwoody, too...

To the officer that must work the door at Josephine's you might want to check and see why a restaurant does not have any tables. I believe the Mansion shut down for a similar discrepancy. If you patrolled that area then why did you not stop the drug traffic that you were aware of at the Shell.

@January 7, 2013 12:15 AM-u are dirty,it's not DeKalb, @January 7, 2013 11:50 AM-how is a county not relevant?, @January 7, 2013 4:22 PM-if Doraville can clean up this area why didn't they the clean up areas already in their city?, how is a mosque illegal?, what pool hall?, and thank a DeKalb County Judge for that "night club" as he allowed it after the owner filed a lawsuit against the county and yes DKPD patrolled the area, @January 7, 2013 4:24 PM-yes DKPD policed the area and made cases, if you had a long response then it's probably because Chattcom gave the call to Gwinnett County (again) who gave the calls to Doraville who finally gave the call to DeKalb, @January 7, 2013 4:54 PM-there was one "spa" in the area and cases were made there but if you want a happy ending go to any of the numerous "spas" operating in Doraville for only $25, @January 8, 2013 4:54 PM-Dunwoody Glen is still a shithole but a shithole with a fresh coat of paint....@John Heneghan is once again focusing his attention to matters outside of Dunwoody because we all know that the utopia that is Dunwoody is crime free with no zoning problems and a city council that holds hands and sings love songs with their mayor

Every time there was a call in this area you would see a Dekalb unit flying down 141 through Chamblee to get to it. It was seldom actually patrolled.

Dekalb is a reactive agency in fringe areas like this and this area will be better served by Dorraviile.

@ January 9, 2013 8:00 PM:

It seems like Mr. Know-It-All took offense at my comment about Golden Touch. I'm not solely blaming PD for their continued existence; I know it takes more the one officer to shut the place down. Several years ago when the county proudly announced new laws/ordinances were in place that would eventually shut down all these spas (aka sex-trafficking hubs), then I guess I should have known better than to expect DeKalb to actually solve a problem.

Yeah, apparently "cases were made", but that didn't shut the place down, did it? Telling me to go find another place for a happy ending implies you think I couldn't get one at Golden Touch. I don't know where you learned logic like that, but Golden Touch is still open and violating the law probably every day.

The fact that you recommend I go to one of those $25 foot spas shows you know nothing about the sex trade in an area of DeKalb you are supposedly familiar with. I hope you're not Vice because that would speak incredibly poorly of your division. The Chinese foot spas are all legit. It's obvious you don't know the difference between those and the Korean spas that have engaged in prostitution in DeKalb for over a decade now.

Golden Touch as well as K Treatment on Buford Highway are very well known spots for prostitution, yet they remain open day after day because DeKalb County has not done enough to close them. So I guess we'll see how long it takes Doraville to shut down Golden Touch now, won't we?

How do you know prostitution is going on inside there? Have you been in there?

There are massage parlors in about every strip mall on Buford Hwy in Doraville and Chamblee. They are abundant. I never knew that massage was in such high demand....
