Burrell Promises Raise For The Have Nots, No Raise For The Other Deserving Folk

Burrell is promising a raise up to 3%, (key words, up to) to all making less than $37,731 and a one time lump sum (unknown how much) to those who are expecting a 5% raise after 12 months of employment.

Lunacy.

So, is Burrell saying that those making over $37,731 aren't affected by inflation? Sorry, but I think we're paying the same for fuel, bread, milk and all the other necessities of life as the guy on the back of a garbage truck. (Except the ones with take home cars, ha!) Only difference, we haven't threatened to form a union like the garbage collectors have.

We know the county is broke and can't afford to give out raises to everybody. But why only a select few?  Where is his interest in "fairness"? That seems to be the buzz word these days.

We should be demanding fairness! It's either all or none! Does Ellis and the other commissioners really want to go down this road again? How much did it cost the county coffers last time? 9 million dollars?

Where is Chief Cedric on this? Where is our command staff?

Union? We don't need no stinking union! The power of the pen, or the lack there of......if you get our drift.

Yeah... and tomorrow, he'll announce another 3%-5% increase in the employee pension contribution.....can't increase that without giving sanitation an increase to offset that.

I just seen the youtube "proof of incomplete arrest". tough break! another dkpd officer 1042. Whats the point of a raise when everybodys being fired or quitting??

One foot out the door.... making more than $37K said...

So they're now going to do a compensation study across the county AND... give priority to fire and PD.... TWO YEARS to complete!

Hell, they have a completed study that they ignored.... and most of us will be GONE in two years!

Anonymous said...

I would like to see the demographics of those that get a raise.

Anonymous said...

And that is what we deserve. As long as the rank and file CONTINUE to lap up these drippings, we wil continue to get crapped on. I know, let's all go to a BOC meeting...yeah, that will fix it! NOT!!! All these idiots know is money. And as long as they treat PD as a cash cow, they will never do anything for us. So keep writing all of your tickets and bitching about no pay, but until we are ready to do what we need to, even in the face of transfers and crap from our supervisors, things will never get better. The last ticket strike was working...we need to do it again.

Ticket strike now!

Thanks to all the officers out there writing tickets. You just funded a raise for sanitation and roads / drainage. You morons can do real police work without writing tickets.

11What about the retirees, not having an increase in a number of years, and most are below the "living wage"....

Mass exodus coming soon leaves Dekalb with officers less than 3 years. Doesn't that say something about Dekalb who can't retain good dedicated and experience officers

Whatever, you guys are abunch of idiots for still working there! Leave , quit resign or retire, that place is never getting better, move on and put it behind you! Do your self a favor.

This is a slap in the face...nothing more...nothing less....they know without a doubt...we are not going to do anything...
TICKET STRIKE!!!!..they heard us last time....
who says you cant write warnings....how much more are you/we going to take????
I know everyone on our shift is on board....and we are talking to other shifts and other prec.'s...
you all gave me that camera....well i'm going to use it when you tell me I have to write tickets.....
THAT BLADE SWINGS BOTH WAYS!!!

We may not be able to strike like these guys, but we can stop raising money for other people to get raises while we get nothing. Stop writing tickets!

Why does this surprise anyone? We haven't seen a raise in....hell I lose track of the years. Until the citizens of Dekalb County give a shit about their community, it will remain the same. As of now they keep electing/reelecting incompentant, immorale, criminals who could care less about the police or safety of Dekalb. The only thing they care about is lining their own pockets. Is what it is. I'd like to say it will change, but time has shown that it will not until the citizens demand it. So, once again, we are on our own.

This 'step n fetch it' command staff has warned us all that our new chief doesn't want to talk about money or morale. What the hell does he want to meet with the officers to talk about then? It will send a strong message if NO officers show up for this 'meet the chief' crap! If he doesn't want to talk about these two issues. then we dont have anything to meet about.

Let me start off by saying....

Welcome back to Tebo, Flemister, Graham & VJ. Our new Chief is nothing more than a chip from that old arrogant block. It's back to the old intimidation factor in the good ole DKPD. It sure feels good knowing that old feeling is back, it's like an abused wife who just loves getting the shit kicked out of her by her lovely abusive husband.

I just want to say thanks to our new Chief, and welcome home. Looks like you got you henchman in place so let's go see who we can intimidate today. Time to kick some $%@#!

Sanitation? Do they still send a bus to the far outskirts of metro Atl. to pick them up and give them a ride to work? Then they probably give them a ride back home. Guess why we can't get paid on Friday's anymore? You got it . Most of them laid out of work that day ! Guess being unskilled, little or no work ethic, and unreliable puts you right at the top of pay-raise priority. I remember when sanitation went on strike, long time ago. Those people didn't have a clue why they were there or what they were supposed to do. They just wandered around in front of the news camera mumbling " mo money, mo money. We needs mo money" ! The county couldn't give them a pay raise fast enough , then gave them a ride back home to Newton county. Damn, just damn !!!

Haven't met the new chief and really couldn't give a damn. Like our pay, our jobs will remain the same.... we'll show up on time, punch the clock, answer calls, punch out and do it again the next day.

I have little faith in the department and less in those who bark in Decatur.

A county that cherishes its trash more than its police force. Suppose I'll go apply at sanitation.

Anon 10:01,
The only reason I want to meet the chief is to ask him why he chose to come here and work for a crooked CEO, and then says he wants to clean up corruption in the department. News flash chief - your boss is corrupt!

Anonymous said...

Sanitation got organized, stood together and they are getting raises. We did the same thing a year ago when the county was trying to call working for the county for free one day a week a furlough day. We reduced ticket writing and we got results. It's time for action again. No raises for us, no ticket revenue for them.

Stand together! We can win this one! Sanitation did it and won! We did it before and won! We can do it again! Warning tickets only!

Anonymous said...

Didn't the Commissioners fall within that pay raise? HA...this was for them. You all are replaceable and just a warm body to answer stupid 911 calls. When will yall realize that? They don't care about public safety. It's about pleasing the people that vote. A majority of sanitation reside in the county, who do you think they will re-elect? This place will never get better.

The corrupt employees in Dekalb County out-weigh the honest employees.

Oh boy, the big raise will cut out some of the corruption. Now, the employees don't have to leave the buildings to get their kick-backs.

Anonymous said...

Who is in and who is out?

I'm in and I'll bring the rest of my team with me! This is only going to work if we're all in!

It's time for a warning ticket blitz! They can't complain about productivity if we are using our officer discretion to write warnings instead of revenue generating long copies!

We deserve a raise!

I found this interesting article written by our new chief
“Dr. Cedric Alexander at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Rochester Medical Center, provides short and long-term therapy for police officers and their families. Dr. Alexander believes the Levenson and Roberts research demonstrates the challenge that confronts police officers and their spouses. He notes that patients report general job-related stress, and this stress may precipitate depressed moods, anxiety or post-traumatic stress. That job stress shows up in marital interaction, states Dr. Alexander, "...certainly aligns with much of the work I do on a daily basis."
The results of this study might predict an unhappy outcome for many police families, and for any family where one partner is engaged in a high stress occupation. Researchers Levenson and Roberts, and reviewers Crouter and Alexander, agree however, that we should screen individuals as they enter a high-stress profession, and build counseling and family support into those professions before stress has a detrimental effect on individuals, marriages, or families.”
Now with what he wrote I would like to say that yes our job is dangerous and stressful we all know this and we all chose to become police officers for a reason which I hope in all cases is to protect and serve and do it with honor and integrity.
I would like to make a suggestion and challenge the new chief to do the same when it comes to running this department, meaning don’t be a bully don’t threaten officers because they are not writing enough tickets and don’t let your staff and supervisors bully or intimidate or threaten officers either.
It is bad enough that the morale is at rock bottom and that we all know we are not getting any type of raise in the future. This place is a ticking time bomb and the stress that officers are under is ridiculous who wants to come to work and have to fight criminals and the your supervisors and then go work a part time and worry if you are going to be written up for not writing tickets or be told your being moved to another shift or kicked out of cid or where you are assigned.
You try to provide the best for your family and so that means you have to work part time jobs and be away from them. Believe me we are all stressed out and would love to come to work and do our jobs to the best of our ability but it is hard when no one is on our side and we are always being told we can be transferred or written up.
Don’t let the comments on this blog become true about you being just another TBOW show us you are different and stand with us not aginst us.

It did work before, like a year ago, you assclown! We were being forced to work for the county for free one day a week. We slowed down our ticket writing, the commissioners took notice, and we ended up getting furloughed instead of working for free. Furloughs suck, but I'd rather sit at home and not get paid than work for free for the county! Get on board! We can do this!

If you write a long copy, you're putting money in the pockets of sanitation!

21+ yrs w/ DKPD and I've got a gold badge. Reality has hit me square in the face. This place is a ditto copy of the last. I got my paperwork and resume completed. It's been delivered to Brookhaven. I had a very positive & rewarding talk with the new Chief of Brookhaven... I've realized it's definitely time to go. This place is going down faster than I ever thought it would.

All I can say is good luck to those who decide to remain but luck is not going to help you. Do yourself and your family right and get the hell out of DKPD before it takes you under.

All that garbage when people say the grass isn't greener, well there is no grass here in Dekalb....it's all WEEDS now!!

@April 25, 2013 at 2:00 PM ...Brookhaven isn't hiring DKPD officers. The mayor once said, "what has DeKalb Police ever done for our area". The College Park Mayor and Council previously fired the newly hired Brookhaven Chief. The assistant chief was on the unemployment line after being laid off in Forsyth and their PIO was hired in as a sergeant. He previously worked at Paulding County Sheriff. The Brookhaven residents said they wanted a police department that knows them. They are avoiding us primarily because of the few that ended up on the news and because of the negative post they read on here.

Some of you really believe the grass is greener at Brookhaven. Many of you can't deal with the politics now, you don't think those politics will be more at Brookhaven? New department where the expectations are extremely high. How many of you can handle working a small city limit area? Once those hot spots dry up, then what? 12 hour shifts for uniform, is that for you? Same shifts as Dunwoody. Gonna give those extra jobs up then? The benefit package is sweet, but are you really ready to deal with a brand new department that is still learning what will and won't work? I see those calls coming in now, you will be bitches for the residents.

How are the meetings with the chief going? Anything productive, or is it the same song and dance? I see people are still being selected for CID without a specialized position notice posted. I see Carl Mobley and Sgt Love are still being taken care of. Seems like business as usual.

Has anyone seen the request for the new car design. Really....... The only design request I care about is the design on my pay check. It still looks the same except the numbers are shrinking every year. They should ask the Majors and Captains, Swat, and Special Operations for their input because that is who will be driving the cars. I dont care if they paint pink daisys on the cars if we are not going to be able to drive them home I dont give a rats ass how they look.

I was thinking the same thing. All these Blue Orders placing Officers and Supervisors in specialized positions. Who is making these picks and based on what resume. You are right same ole B.S. These types of actions are what continue to kill morale.

Anonymous said...

If history is any map to the future, Brookhaven will cherry pick the best and the brightest.... Dekalb will keep the that which is left behind.... You get and you keep what you pay for.

Eventually the officers worth keeping will either leave or, in the case of those here to long to leave....ie under the old pension...retire.

old warhorse said...

re; anon 10:08." Every man is the architect of his own fortune".(A.CLAUDIUS). The lowest paid workers are not the only one's struggling in this county. The lack of pay-raises doesn't just affect the uneducated, and unskilled. It's impact takes it's major toll on the unmotivated,as well. Minimum wage is called minimum wage ,for a reason. These employee's have the highest turnover rate in any industry. If they are not making enough money, then do what we all do, WORK A DAMN PART TIME JOB!! My first job as a kid, was digging ditches with a shovel. I realized quickly that this was not ever going to be my chosen "career path", if I could possibly help it, and I set about improving my lot in life. Our badge does not give us any special priviledge or any great expectations ,other than your "obvious disdain" for all that are brave enough to wear it for people "just like you"! You can't possibly be trying to make a racial incident out of this, are you? Don't even try to turn this into another pitiful, baseless example of throwing out that old tired ass "RACE CARD"! Just what in the hell does Cobb,Hall or Birmingham have to do with any of this ? I bet you are one of those, who blames all of your failures on everything and everybody else, but yourself. Makes perfect sense, now! We,the police, can't strike, or even threaten to strike, w/o being immediately terminated on the spot.(no recourse). WE ARE THE ONLY COUNTY EMPLOYEE'S THAT THIS APPLIES TO! Maybe, just maybe, if the county would stop pissing away money on walking trails that people are afraid to walk on , parks that people are afraid to go to, midnight basketball and soap box derby parks, there would be enough money left in the county budget for the employees's "quality of life" issues. IF WE COULD JUST SLOW DOWN THE CONSTANT HEMORRHAGING OF MONEY, MISMANAGED AND STOLEN BY YOUR ELECTED "DECATUR" OFFICIALS, WE COULD ALL GET THE PAY RAISE WE "ALL" DESERVE !! Now, run tell that.

Anonymous said...

Carl Mobley is where he is because this chief is a puppet, just like the others. You noticed no one from the Pals unit got moved. That's because that unit was started by the CEO. So the chief pulls from CID but not from Pals. What meaningful project has the PAls unit ever done? I'm all ears!

Anonymous said...

Before you all think Yandura is such a great hire, why don't you ask some College Park PD officers (regardless of what you think about the area or its residents), how they felt about him. Talk about loving tickets and ignoring crime. Yandura likes to focus on bringing in grants and stuff. While grants are good, his grants come from doing all the ticket blitzes and road blocks. So, if you like writing tickets, Brookhaven will love you.

As far as Dekalb, why are they still even in the sanitation business? Fulton got out of it years ago. Cobb is the same, residents chose their own haulers. It saves money on employment costs and then residents can pay for the perks they want or opt out of them. You don't like rolling your trash can down to the curb, then its an extra cost for the private hauler to come in your driveway. This is the beauty of the private sector. But then, you don't have a voting base nor are you in the jobs program business anymore

Anonymous said...

I believe DeKalb doesn't get out of the sanitation business because many of the residents, not to specify where, don't or won't have the money to pay for service. Then it falls onto landlords. The other is look how many voters the BOC bought and paid for. Trash service is more important than police service in this county.

Anonymous said...

Above stated..."Trash service is more important than police service in this county.".....

The people of Dekalb are nuts.... PD is the only organization removing the TRASH that is a danger to them AND their belongings. We're trash collectors and should also be given a raise.

It always amazes me the learn of the number of officers who want to work in DeKalb County but only on their terms. They can't physically or mentally cope with the DKPD academy and they can't work at the same levels but man they love to lecture DKPD on how to police. I suspect these 100 or so officers from all over applying for Brookhaven will be the kind of officers who want it on their terms. One of the terms will be to never answer a scary call by myself! Ever since one part of the county became a city with their own police I've noticed more extra jobs there for DKPD than ever existed before it became a city. I bet the same happens in the newest city after all that mayor is putting the care and protection of his new city in the hands of a police chief who was fired from College Park and an asst chief who was previously unemployed. @April 28, 2013 at 7:54 AM..."Brookhaven will cherry pick the best and the brightest" ...they might try and hire the 4 or 5 who already work an extra job providing security for the mayor's HOA. ..Forget sanitation did y'all see how scared the commission was of a dozen or so women in red t-shirts protesting the animal shelter. The county will now spend million$ on a 5 star animal shelter for a bunch of unadoptable pit bulls. Someone please take these ladies on a late night tour of south DeKalb when the packs of stray pit bulls start roaming the streets. Maybe their priorities will change if they saw how it was DKPD who responds to the 911 call at 3am about someone being attacked by one of these packs because animal control is on-call.

Garbage said...

The county is in the trash business for the reason stated above. Aside from the well off parts of the county, government can't rely on the rest to not dump their trash in vacant lots and be filthy individuals. As far as the apartment residents go, the cost of trash pickup is typically factored into the cost of rent. If sanitation was left up to individual choice shit would pile up because of the ignorance of the average citizen. Sanitation has the county by the short hairs and they know it.
