One Time 3 Percent Bonus

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The DeKalb County Commission agreed to a one-time 3 percent bonus for all sworn personnel in the county earning between $37,700 and $60,000.

The estimated $980,000 cost will come from the current budget’s fund balance if interim CEO Lee May approves the spending. May said he is still reviewing budget figures and has not yet decided if he will approve the bonus or if he will focus on raises in 2014.

The bonus proposal comes on the heels of a 3 percent raise earlier this year, pushed by indicted CEO Burrell Ellis, to use $2.36 million in taxpayer money to give 2,600 workers who earn below the “living wage” of $37,700 a year for a family of three.

3% bonus.... on the heels of a 3% raise for those making under 37K... Let's be clear.... if any of PD saw that 3% raise, they were very few in number.......

The 3% one time bonus is nice but, it is just that.... a ONE TIME bonus.... it doesn't help me in retirement and it is a ONE TIME helping hand to the increase in the Pension and Health deductions and the OVERALL COST OF LIVING we've seen since the LAST time we saw a raise....

Hell, we USED to see 3-4% in annual MERIT RAISES.

This department will soon be veteran officers counting the days till retirement and rookie officers getting training and experience before they jump to another agency.

They are all talking the talk. Are they going to walk the walk ?

Big Deal......A bonus doesn't add anything to the pension for an individual. All it does, it makes the paycheck for that particular time period pay more in taxes and contributions to the pension. When it all is said and done, you as an employee will be deeper in the hole when it is finished.

Give a 3% raise instead and something better will be accomplished. Also, this will not cause more bad feelings that are already very low in moral.

This county ought to be run like a profitable business instead of a dysfunctional government that it is.

bonus is bs. The county is continuously trying to sabotage our pensions. bonus=one time payment. Raise could mean 30 years of payment obligations.

You know what is really pathetic....a large number of sergeants would be eligible for the bonus because they make less than 60k.

Anonymous said...

You know what really sucks is there are numerous MPO's here who once again will be cut out of this pay. So much for dedication and working hard to support this county with continued years to only get slapped down and told, "Screw You, you should've left years ago".

Anonymous said...

Anon 5:46 pm. If you been around here any amount of time, and I am sure you are one of the older MPOs . You know you are a liar and only write that MPOs have been cut out in an attempt to gain sympathy from Decatur and those who don't know. MPOs have been the only group that have gotten increases in the last 7 years without being promoted. You probably make more that Sgts, Lts, and Capts. So don't even try the poor mouth tactic Slug. Try getting promoted.

Anon 627, some people enjoy working the road as an MPO such as myself, I have no desire to be a supervisor or be in any other unit. No need for name calling.

Amen 6:27 , try getting shafted by the last bonus, previous pay study and now this b.s. of people making between 30k to 60k being the only beneficiaries. I am glad to see those in this range getting it but why not include those that have worked hard to go thru the ranks. No raises in over 7 yrs and only receiving 5% for promotions is b.s.

You people kill me. Once again, you are allowing the Interim CEO and BOC to divide us. Just another distraction in a long list of distractions. You might as well watch them as they jingle their keys. I feel confident that Officer Klusmann would want ALL sworn personnel to receive a raise in pay. As usual, we will let Decatur win and take shots at each other. Maybe I'm wrong but don't we all deserve a meaningful raise in pay? Hasn't it been 6-7 years since we have received anything? That is our fight ladies and gentlemen! Not this meaningless attempt to placate us once again. I'm ready for my annual increases to be implemented again! How about you?

Hold on just a minute Anon 6:27...... The last time I checked I haven't had a pay increase since 2007.... If you know something I don't then please let me know but it hasn't shown up on one of my pay stubs.... The fact is we all work for Dekalb County and every last employee that has made sacrifices and worked thru the struggle needs a pay increase. This garbage of only paying a select few is horse squeeze. It's time that this crap stop and everyone is paid who has suffered thru the county's "BS"....

Oh and by the way smart ass there are some of us veteran MPO's who choose the career path that we have to best serve this county and our families. I guess that's something you don't know anything about. It doesn't take a good dedicated hard working Officer making his way up thru the ranks to be better than the next guy....did you ever stop to think that perhaps some of us veteran MPO's made a choice to be the best at what we do, and to make sacrifice's other than putting rank on our arm or shoulder. Is that how you measure a man based on his rank. Well let me tell you this smart ass....we have some truly awesome veteran MPO's who have made sacrifices and do a great job and it's these veteran MPO's that make the leadership look good in this department, never forget that and we are just as deserving of any pay increases as the next guy.....The only problem is it doesn't need to be a one-time thing. A one time increase does nothing for your pension or retirement...or does that not mean anything to you since you probably don't have any plans to make a career here in Dekalb to begin with....!!

....and the retirees get?

It has been 8 years since we have had a raise and to be honest it’s a slap in the face that the B.O.C. wants to give a one-time 3% raise. Why don’t you just use that money to have another fancy lunch catered in while you sit around thinking of other ways to screw with us.
I am working two part-time jobs and miss spending time with my family and you are yelling for me to bring you more tickets and tell me I will have a low evaluation if I don’t. What a joke not one of you would put your life in danger or do what I do for the amount of money you pay me.

TO anon 6:27...

First of all I don't like being called a liar. If you intend to do that then you best come tell me directly. I'm in the same boat as everyone else in this county, no increase in pay going on 6 yrs now.

Second, I'm far from any slug in this dept., as a matter of fact I bust my ass daily for this county and it's citizens to be the best officer I can and provide the best service I can. I'm where I am in this dept. because I chose to be...period.

If you need to know how to reach me Anon 6:27 to discuss anything further then just ask and you shall receive...

Anon 6:27 8/18/13......You are a true piece of work. Calling on the front officers a liar, tell them about the screwed up pension, etc. You are the true idiot here because you totally clueless.

As retired LE, I can tell the hassles and the good times we have all been through. But when the economy turns to shit, the first to suffer is public safety. We do not have to be told that we are in a group that fails because the politicians tell us so.

For your own good, quit telling us that we are lairs and idiots because basically you are much worse .

"....and the retirees get?"
Ask the retiree rep. He lives in the central time zone. The only retirees that should get a COLA now, are the ones that retired before the last early out. Those guys got their deal, for the time being.

2 anom 6:27. Typical anonymity sniping. You will make a great "cookie cutter" supervisor, all the way to the top. Some officer's are not willing to sell their soul's,just so they can bully those around them.

Anonymous said...

The retirees got a great big extra payout that the current employees are still paying for.

Anonymous said...

Sorry anon 10:49, but you are wrong. The retirees haven't had a cost of living raise or ANY type bonus or payout in over a decade.

Maybe you are confused about all the employees county wide that were offered an early out.

Don't be hating on the retirees, we did our time.

Anonymous said...

At least the retired crew are still getting paychecks. I doubt this county will be around in another 22 years for me to enjoy it and thats exactly why Im handing in my two week notice on Friday. Good luck and Godspeed, Ill be working on the beach if you need me.

Anonymous said...

Hey I retired in 2003 and I didn't get s... for a bonus and only 1 COLA of 1 percent in 2005...thats it. Insurance and taxes have eaten away at it to the tune of almost 1000 a month from what I first got. So don't get on the retirees who went before the ones that got the early outs...we paid our dues also....

Anonymous said...

I want to know who Anon 6:27 is so I can call him out. I would love to have a one on one conversation with this guy. If you're going to bash officer's here because they have chosen a different career path than you then at least have the balls to put your name to it. Otherwise shut your pie hole!!!

You know some officers have done more with their career's as an MPO and have more respect than some or most who have moved up the ranks...now that's a fact JACK!!

So tell me. Why should only "sworn" employees get the bonus? I guess the rest of the county employees don't need more money? Yes other employees have very dangerous jobs as well. Yes we drive vehicle with blinky lights too, as well as enforce codes, laws, and stop theft on a daily basis. Just don't understand while only sworn employees get the $$$.

So when is this bonus or raise supposed to hit our bank accounts? ... after they announce a new round if furloughs?

Anonymous said...

How's that 3% bonus or raise working?.... Still waiting for the check, the keys to that take home they're making noise about and the additional officers from North that will give us the much needed manpower.... I've seen more officers assigned to special units or details but we're still down when it comes to calls pending.

dont get me wrong, i appreciate what police do. one of my best friends is one of your finest, i just dont see how only sworn officers should get a raise and not the rest of us. lets face it ..how many hours a day are you just sitting in your nice air conditioned car riding around or sitting? you chose your career and i dont feel you should get a raise just because you chose a more dangerous path.

Anonymous said...

1:04PM, the only time we're sitting in our cars is when we're rushing from call to call because we have 20 calls pending at all times. If you're fine with that level of service, fine, then don't give us raises. You're also not allowed to complain about the poor service you're getting. If you want to motivate people and attract good, new talent, you have to treat your people right and show them they are appreciated.

There are surely some bad apples with The DPD, same thing at ATnT, your bank and anywhere else but you my friend are completly full of shit.

Bring your pussy ass down here to Gresham Park and patrol this Murder Capitol of DeKalb and Metro Atlanta.

There are no over paid Police Officers on Partol in the Entire Metro Area.

I believe that The DeKalb Police Force is getting better = It is only because of their desire to Protect and Serve as best they can the Citizens of DeKalb that many of them stay here for who in the Fuck would want to work for Boo-Rail and maybe Vernon much less this DeKalb Board of Crooks.

I can only hope that your friend on the force figures out who you are and slaps the shit out of you for me !

1:04.YOU APPRECIATE US? Riding/sitting around all day in our air conditioned cars, when we don't have much to do? You "other" county employee's are the only ones who seem to get new "air conditioned" vehicles to ride/sit around in every year. Sounds like somebody really needs to be taking a way over due "piss test" at the Health Dept. Uh,exactly where does your friend work? Sounds sort of like he/she has one of those cushy/just hanging out in the "air conditioned building all day,not doing much, assignments for personnel who have "been serving since lunch". All the road officers are running from call to call, handling all the bullshit,oh by the way when you have time, "officer friendly/can't we all just get along" special's.Then, let's not forget the good old "traffic ticket, lets all get out there and write those tickets for our beloved captain, quota". AND,if they don't,they get the good old "undocumented counselling",or what you would probably call,GETTING F*CKED WITH. You must have your counties mixed up. THIS IS DeKALB COUNTY. But then again,we don't have quite the egregious notority, you other county employee's have. Hmm,like video's on all the metro networks, and A.J.C. coverage of yall hanging out in the Q.T. all day, playing the lottery, talking on your cell phones, grab assing, sleeping in county vehicles while "on the job",f*cking off, hiding in crack roads, completely disappearing when it rains,AND,lest we forget, laying out of work after payday, and following the weekends.(oh,did I forget to mention,on all your weekends and all the holidays off). My sweet Lord,by the time yall fixed the water leak on Clairmont Rd.,most of these rookies could have retired by then. But,I digress. Why hell, just lay down that shovel, climb out of that dump truck, hop off the back of that garbage truck, and come on down. With the way these officers are quitting,we can sure use the help.Don't even worry about having to pass that annoying entrance exam,or passing those pesky criminal history,or polygraph/voice stress tests. This county will hire anybody. Don't judge us because of our payscale, and deserving a raise. Yes we chose a more dangerous path,BUT,THEN AGAIN,IT PAYS MORE! Now,and get mad. After all,you did ask. All righty then.Take care.Buh,buh, now!!!!
