Empty Promises

Lee May promised a 3% bonus for all public safety.

Doesn't seem that's going to work out so well. So instead, it's being proposed that only a certain few get a bonus.

Ripe for corruption.

AJC described the 3% bonus as a "plan" not a "promise". If the blogmaster has a copy of the email/memo Lee May wrote to employees, I would appreciate seeing that. A plan does not mean a promise. http://www.ajc.com/news/news/breaking-news/plans-under-way-for-hundreds-of-new-cops-firefight/nZszh/

We've lost a couple experiened officers to MARTA because they'll be paid 3 or 4 thousand more a year. We'll lose a few more to Chamblee for the same reason. A 20 year sergeant is leaving for more money in Cobb and a few detectives have left for similar reasons. That loss of experience will cost homeowners and businesses alot of money as the crimnal element will take advantage of the inexperienced officers. I can't quantify the loss in terms of dollars but a loss of 40 years of experience is significant and sadly this type of loss has become routine for DKPD. The commissioners will not approve a partial bonus. Dump the 3% plan and put MPOs and above in take home cars, even if they live outside of the county. The citizens won't continuely pay to train some other city's police. The 5 who left cost the taxpayers how much to train, $500 thousand? The cost of the cars is probably close to the replacement cost for officers lost to attrtion. A secondary benefit for the citizens is the reduced wait time as we swap shifts. That "response time" is one of the citizen's main complaints. If just 25% of a shift is assigned to skip roll call and started answering calls then we should virtually eliminate the lag time; providing the outgoing watch stays active til 15 minutes after the hour.

As I recall from May's meeting, with all of us in attendance, he said all sworn would receive the 3% bonus. Is he now backing away from his statement? Can the F.O.P. check into this for us and get us an answer?

Anonymous said...

to anon 2:34 pm...the commissioners don't look at it that way. officers are commodities. they are just bodies and can be replaced with cheaper costing people so they are just fine with it.

Let me give the Commissioners and Lee May a quick lesson in Accounting 101.

This one time bonus is supposed to cost the county less than $1 million.

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/breaking-news/plans-under-way-for-hundreds-of-new-cops-firefight/nZszh/

When the county was screwing us over in 2010, the ticket slowdown ended up costing the county about $5 million in lost revenue.

http://www.gadailynews.com/news/70519-dekalb-county-police-officers-call-for-ticket-strike.html

Lee May, Commissioners, you need to ask yourselves a question: What is the better deal in front of us?

A) Give us the bonus you promised at a cost of less than $1 million.

Or

B) Piss us all off and lose at least $5 million in revenue.

I think you should follow through with your promise. We can write a whole lot of warning tickets that don't give you one red cent of revenue! Thank you for your time and consideration!

This is a laugh....did somebody actually think this was going to happen?? This county will lie, cheat, and rob the officers who stick around, the rest of us will pack our bags and head else where. Stop being so gullible and believing these idiots loads of shit they feed you!! I said this wouldn't happen, and it won't....it's just sad that they have to lie to give people any hope or encouragement to want to remain in the DKPD.

I hope and pray that they give us the bonus that was promised. Some of us really work hard because criminals are still busy and we do Care...

Anonymous said...

I remember CEO May stating the bonus would be for all sworn... guess some of us are getting screwed yet again with the less that 60,000 receiving and not the more senior guys.

Anonymous said...

I got am idea. Give a bonus to every DKPD employee who turns in a DKPD employee who is breaking the law, on a drug dealers payroll or participating in any criminal behavior. There is a lot of opportunity for those who want a bonus. Clean up the department. The people of the DKPD control their own future. Clean up the DKPD and have a GREAT place work or keep resisting efforts to do the next right thing and work in the pig pen the corrupt officers have made for everyone. Work with IA and the FBI. Chief Alexander keep up the good work.

Corruption is so bad in Dekalb County, the DA should offer a reward to role on your co-workers. And you can remain anonymous.

So much for the Christmas plans we had...

Hell, I am not a cop, retired and stay the frack out of the county as much as possible, and even I knew this was just a "plan" and not a done deal.
The Democrat party OWNS DeKalb government, and believe it or not, progressive Democrats have a LOT of socialism in their mentality.
The last major pay-raise in '97 was a socialist joke that gave large raises to blue collar workers, and totally screwed the professional/technical employees which explains why it is so hard to hire/retain competent professional/tech workers. Combined with DeKalb's political leadership that views DeKalb employees as incompetent serfs unworthy of discussion, who would want to work for such vile, asinine employee management?
We have seen this attitude for the last two decades. The last CEO that actually liked the employees was Liane Levitan. This was when the employees started getting screwed by the commissioners/CEO's elites decision to not seriously engage the employees in discussion of county policies and decisions that vitally effect the employees. The CEO/Commissioner talks a good game to the public and the media, and then turnaround and screw the employees out of time and money every fracken' time. Its the only thing they know to do.
Best of luck, mates!

PS, in case any of you are wondering what the hell I do while retired, here is a small video, I also shoot the five-stand and sporting clays. Gun-Cam!

Your Xmas will be spent alone at Waffle House surrounded by the dregs of society. Your miserable existence will never change so long as you remain in that ghetto.

Us in the FD have been advised the December 13 check.

Anonymous said...

Blogmaster, what is your source for this rumor? I ask because there has bee no official or public statement to change the plan. The plan, as publically stated, was a 3% bonus to all public safety regardless of salary. I am not aware of any change so once again I ask, what is your source of this rumor?

I have attended two seperate meetings with Chief Alexander and Mr. May. In both meetings they were asked point blank if was everyone was getting it or just $60,000 and below. Both occasions they said everyone sworn would get the 3%.
Why are they going back on their word and not communicating this with us?

Anonymous said...

Maybe because he started having his name drug through the mud on here?

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Ego
If you have been on the 4th floor and haven't been on the road since in forever....Don't expect uniform officers to know who you are much less your rank....Please don't be offended when we don't jump to attention when passing you in hallway. We have been humping calls alllll day and wanna go home...So pack up your EGO go back to your office and play on computer. Or put your uniform on hit the streets and lend a hand....earn my respect! and I will know who the hell you are. Or go to East, recruits play those games all day down there....I mean really, get over.......yourself!

Chief , Respectfully can you please put us back on 4/3, my family life is affected, my kid misses his dad and that extra day of daycare is killing us. Will you please come talk to the detectives in a close door meeting? Morale is the lowest ever but we cannot get to you to talk, we are respectfully asking for some time to talk to our Chief.

Chief says NO, who told you to have a family. Career comes first if you're going to work here.

After reading Anonymous 3:39 post I was working on a letter to send to Chief Alexander, The DeKalb County CEO, The DeKalb BOC ( in support of better working conditions for DeKalb County Public Safety works...support for the 3%, 4/3...and so on) but after reading your post I again must think " WHY " would any person want to help a group of adults that express themselves the way you have. Anom 3:39 post was heart felt by me, a DeKalb County citizen (YOUR BOSS). Anom 7:30 I am going to ask you to pack your bags and GO. Find another county, employer to listen to your crying because I want to HELP Anom 3:39. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT SOUNDS TO THE PUBLIC (YOUR BOSS)

Nov 13. 0724, come on over to east and maybe you won't make stupid remarks.

Then do as everyone else tired of being treated like shit....go work where they treat you like they like ya, pay ya better, and give you take home cars, better insurance. Just think you can do all this on the Dekalb County training dime...

This place is just like any other business nowadays. You have to make yourself valuable and seen as an asset and not a complaining detriment. Talented people are sought after for specialized positions, promotions, etc. If you are talentless you had at minimum better earn your keep writing tickets. I suppose East is as good a place as any for the drudge work.

@November 14, 2013 at 9:06 PM ...As you read this blog understand that the majority of the DKPD does not post here. What this site does get is a lot of surfers like November 15, 2013 at 9:08 AM . There is information available on here about DKPD both good and bad but do not take a post on here to be representative of DKPD as a group. Do not assume news on here is the full story or the correct story.

9:06. Once again! This blog is "not for you",to comment on. This is strictly for officers, family members, and friends,to vent their stress and frustrations. We would never search for a citizen blog to voice our unqualified opinion's on problem's that we have absolutely no experience or understanding of! Nobody, absolutely nobody, cares what your negative comments are, or more especially, what you think! Nobody that works here, lives here, because we don't want to be around any of you, except in the line of duty! Stone cold, but true!! You are not our "boss". We do not,and never have "worked" for you. You don't give us the power of arrest,or even the slightest degree of our authority. In other words, you are a complete non-entity in this whole, idiotic equation of yours. You don't hire us,fire us,or pay us. According to your ramblings, you don't even support us. You made two separate remarks, that we work for you, then we work for the public. Which one? You can only have one boss. News flash,we don't WORK for either one of you. We are here "for you",bottom line. THAT'S IT!! 3:39 sounds like somebody's wife, and good for her! As for you, wake up and realize that we are here for you,you are not here for us. You will ALWAYS need us,a hell of a lot more than we will ever need you. You have absolutely no input,or impact on our employment, our pay,our longevity, our assignments, promotions,or transfers, our retirement, benefits,ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! If anything,"YOU,and THE PUBLIC",are the reasons most of us are leaving,in search of better communities to work in. You are just considered as job security. No more/no less. You are the one's who elects all these officials in this county. Not us! Write your letters to any and all. It makes absolutely no difference to us, what-so-ever! If "YOU" or "THE PUBLIC" needs us,as you surely will, pick up the phone/give us a call. We will be right there!!

I think you owe the man applogy. Remember to stick to the facts.

Check the county email, 12/13 check will see the bonus.

Anonymous said...

I've gotten on here to complain about the powers that be however I have to say I appreciate the one time bonus even though it isn't a raise. All I ask is that the county throw a dog a bone; this is a start and I am appreciative especially during this time of year. Not what I wanted but I am grateful for the blessing!

Anonymous said...

Blogmaster, are you going to change your blog in light of Lee Mays letter from Friday? For those that haven't seen it, it says the checks for 12/13 will have the 3% bonus for ALL public safety, sworn, personnel that were employed on 1 January 2013. It's in your county email.

Anonymous said...

Gotta say I'm impressed if it actually goes through....felt bad though for some of the rooks who said they have been informed that because they graduated in April or May, that they will not receive the bonus....don't let me down Mr. May!!!

Anonymous said...

I don't feel bad for rookies....hell they're not the ones who have gone 6yrs now without any sort of a pay increase...

Anonymous said...

As a fairly new officer for DeKalb, not in general, it is complete bullshit if we do not receive a bonus in December like the rest of the uniform officers just because we are grouped as "rooks" or new graduates. Last time I checked, we still put on the uniform, respond to calls, and put our lives on the line each and every day that we leave our families. To annony. 10:23, it is not our fault that you all have been getting screwed over and haven't received a pay increase in over six years. It should be standard across the board, that all line officers receive a bonus who make less than $60,000, as was initially reported. I hope this is just a rumor, but if this is true...it is absolute horse manure that officers working in DeKalb continue to get screwed over, time and time again.

Anonymous said...

Think of it as a year end bonus. If you weren't here a whole year, you don't get it. That's how it works at most large companies in the private sector.

Anonymous said...

As a "fairly new" Dekalb Officer I feel compelled to ask....Why the hell are you still here??? I sincerely hope you are putting in applications elsewhere.....Don't get stuck here and in 10 years be absolutely miserable.

Anonymous said...

So now the latest is ONLY DKPD will get the 3%. The Sheriff office is not included in that. We'll Mr. May. seem to think the SO is not Public Safety. I'll come back later for my opinion on this if it's true.

Anonymous said...

6:19pm, S.O. isn't getting it because it isn't up to the BOC. They give Thomas Brown a lump sum budget each year. He does whatever he pleases with it. That's why when we were getting furloughed years ago, S.O. was not. If S.O. doesn't get a bonus, blame Thomas Brown.

Anonymous said...

To anon 3:39
If you don't like the 5/2 put in a transfer request back to Uniform and give up your take home car.
To FNG 11:44
Go cry to somebody else. Stay here 7 years without any compensation and then we'll talk about your sacrifice.
To anon 6:19
The Sheriff's Dept. is a constitutional office. The Sheriff tells the commissioners how much money he needs to operate and they give him what they think they can. He can then spend the money as he sees fit. It is up to the Sheriff to give a pay raise to his employees, not the commissioners.

Anonymous said...

Hey SO this will tick you off, I heard that now they are looking at giving it to admin. also.

Anonymous said...

Kudos on the bonus for all sworn but what about the non sworn? I guess they don't matter?

What does Thomas Brown and Cedric Alexander have in common? Neither was ever a policeman or made an arrest.
