By not issuing take homes to sergeants and lieutenants, are they trying to say that they don't rate a pay raise (take home) and they aren't valued?... I think pissing off the sergeants and lieutenants who run the watch is a BIG mistake.

If motivating the line officers is the reason for denying supervisors who have time, rank AND responsibility is the reason they were left out, how come the captains and majors are all driving brand new cars?

Anonymous said...

We'll they issued 40 Take home cars Tuesday. This is a start. Wonder why it was not any media attention?

Someone surely wants to take credit for this new program.
Where was the Doc?

Wow....when I started over a decade plus ago, the sergeant slot was the place to be.... now they only get a 5% raise with the promotion and don't get a take home because they're only a first line supervisor who deals first hand with the crap.

This place sucks.

When will the staffing issues at East Precinct finally be addressed??? Specifically Day Watch. The last three Sunday's we have only run 5- 6 units tops! This past Sunday we only had 4 units on the road until they pulled an officer off of screening. East is the biggest precinct with the largest area to cover, and they have yet to fill the spots of two officers that have recently left day watch. This is absolutely irresponsible, unacceptable, and downright unsafe! You want to talk about production and conducting more traffic stops? How do you suggest we do that exactly with only 6 units on the road and domestics being dispatched every thirty minutes? How about you start with staffing the watch list appropriately, and having enough officers of the road. Yes rookies are on the road and are currently on FTO, but they serve as nothing more than a warm body. It will take at least two to three years before they start coming into their own and actually know what they are doing, and by that time most of them will have probably already left for greener pastures. No wonder why day watch has become the watch everyone wants to stay away from. I would like to stay that I am surprised at how low day watch is currently staffed, but this is DeKalb County, and nothing surprises me anymore....

East precinct has morphed into a fast paced, hideous monster, the bottom has completely fell out. Its getting overrun. It's bad when south has to help with call volume regularly. Custers last stand.

What's up with Tucker Precinct supervisors telling us we cant drive our take home cars to our part time jobs? No other precinct has said such nonsense. Unbelievable!

Anon 1101,
I agree. Good for those that got the cars. However, DKPD has to be the only entity in America that awards subordinates with a $6000 - $8000 perk before giving it to their supervisors. No company in America operates under this concept. Again, good for those who got the cars. I'm sure they deserve them. However, there's no way you can tell me an 8 year MPO deserves a car more than a 20 year sgt/lt.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight - The first one to work and last one to leave (THE SGT) doesn't get issued a car? Laughable... Imagine how far along you'd be in a competently run dept.

Seems like there is becoming a divide between the officers who live in DeKalb County and those who do not. I'm not sure it is being done on purpose but I can't imagine why management thinks this is a healthy thing for the department.

Anon 7:21
You are right about East Precinct being a hell hole. It's not because of the supervision at the precinct itself which seems to be pretty good considering what they have to work with. The call volume / response time, lack of manpower, the condition of the precinct building itself and the ridiculous crime rate at that precinct should be embarrassing to the the management of this department. But I guess Cedric will keep looking out for SOD, ILP and every other B.S. unit in the department.

I was trying to think of something to say but the only thing I came up with is...."I am so glad I am retired from that place". Its like looking back at some terrible illness that you overcame. I think back the way we used to police there and then I hear officers talking about being understaffed at East Pct. East Precinct has become what south precinct was back in the 80's and 90's.....and we all saw it coming.....no big surprise there. What is shocking to me is that there was no plan in place YEARS ago for this. No grand plan to bring up the number of officers on the street to reflect the massive increase in population and crime. It just goes to show how the leadership of the county has NO CLUE what they are doing and hasnt had a clue for decades. As I said, I am so glad I dont have to deal with it anymore But watching it all unfold on the evening news in entertaining.

Ladies and Gents please take my advice. Take the time to check out surrounding agencies and the way that they treat their officers. There are departments that will pay you for your experience and treat you the way that you deserve. Examples would be tuition reimbursement, incentive pay for speciized positions, take-home cars, over-time, and most importantly RESPECT. There are greener pastures please take the time to check out your options. This county cares nothing about you and would prefer you quit so that they can train a rookie for 37k to do your job at a much cheaper price. People are leaving in droves and it's a reason why, a Detective and Sgt. At South just resigned for greener pastures. Please do yourselves and families a favor and just take the time to see what's offered out there; you'll be surprised. God bless you guys and gals.....

Some of the crap that went on before I retired would make you sick. I proved a theft of equipment case (5k value), against a county employee that ended up being swept under the rug. A second incident of a filing cabinet being shipped to storage accidentally still containing a laptop pc beloning to the CEO Vernon Jones' office. When the warehouse was asked to look for it they already removed it and got rid of it. If an audit of county owned equipment were ever to be conducted, the tax payers in Dekalb County would be schocked.

You cant drive your take home to a part time if you are on any part of your three off days. Going to and from work you are allowed to drive it as long as you are reporting for regular duty before or after your part time. But hear this warning from this supervisor, it is not worth it to get caught driving your car when you are off going to a parttime. Even if you do nothing wrong but get hit in the rear at a light or something, your done. If you have a car you more than likely live in the county, so the drive cant be that bad. Don't mess it up for others man, and READ policy so you wont get in trouble.

Anonymous said...

You can thank Major White for that order but rest assured he drives his car to his extra jobs.....all the time.

No negative comments, because they have been thrown a bone. In the form of a take home...Open your eyes happy ones. You too will one day be a veteran officer, then you to will get screwed at every turn...Just watch and see young ones watch and see!

The powers at be better FUCKING WAKE UP! East day watch has lost 5 officers since the end of January alone! 3 very recently to Chamblee. Thank God I don't work at East anymore because I would probably quit on the spot. From what I am told, and from my experience at that precinct, especially day watch, it is a giant clusterfuck!

Giving take home cars to officers who have been with the county for 15 plus years is a start, but they NEED to roll them out to EVERYONE! We all know those veteran officers aren't going anywhere anyways. It's the younger group of officers they should be focusing on, after all, they are the future of DeKalb. Rather than having recruits go through the academy only to leave two years later.

Give us an incentive to stay. These bullshit one time 3% "incentives" don't do jack shit. You want to stop the arterial bleeding and extremely high turnover? Here's a novel idea: How about actually giving us a raise, an annual cost of living increase, & better benefits like EVERY OTHER DEPARTMENT! The pension is also a fucking joke and totally needs to be overhauled. Why does Cedric the Entertainer get a salary increase and we don't?

The morale at this department is beyond being in the toilet. Just my two cents from yet another officer about to be 10-42 from this piece of shit department.

The massive bleeding and extreme turnover will always continue in DeKalb because we all know you are NOT committed to us officer's. You are too cheap and more importantly you do not care to keep us happy, hence veteran after veteran officer leave in droves. Experience and training they posses cannot be easily replaced, no matter how many academies you decide to run at the same time.

Greener pastures here I come! FUCK YOU DEKALB COUNTY!

This sums up how idiotic this place is - a 3100 badge number at center precinct got a take home car because they counted her years of service when she worked in the Record's room. I shit you not!

Maybe some of the ticket writers that stay so far north everyday that they should get paid by one of the cities could write some in East and increase the presence. Why are the SOD units not relocated to where the crime stats and call volume warrant more units, atleast you would have someone to back you. The officers that think they work for Brookhaven but drive a DeKalb unit should be reassigned, you know who you are!

Anonymous said...

Did you mean 15 plus years of service for a take home or 15 plus tickets a day for a take home. The latter has been in effect for years!

Anonymous said...

Is it legal for an East precinct CID sergeant to do a photo line up with a 7 year old victim a day after the crime? Then order a detective to go get a warrant for the wrong charge? Then when called on it, tell the detective that he misunderstood what she said? Just wondering...

We can't help it that several officers bailed and went to Chamblee....hell...I was even offered a job there.....but I stayed in DeKalb......cuss me later for that decision...too many years vested to leave.....still have hope believe it or not...Conroy is a good man....as our president says....change is a coming...lmao.....Rome was not built over night!!!!
So....for what it's worth....tell me with whom you're talking about and we will discuss matters to clear them up......

To 7:43 what is so special about writing as many tickets as you can and then go home early as a reward for your efforts? I know that traffic enforcement is a vital part of policing but we all know that some stay in their little honey holes and get their quota each day. This does not increase the presence in the areas that we are desperately short on units. Just take some of these SOD units and have them located in areas where a watch is short that day, thus increasing the visibility and providing backup when needed for uniform when there might be 4 or 5 units on duty in a certain precinct. I don't mind that you work for SOD just the fact that you need to let go of the incorporated areas and let their police departments handle what is theirs. Several county units spending half their day in Brookhaven or Chamblee while we are pending calls at East, South, Tucker, etc.

Aww come on. If you're going to imitate me, at least learn proper sentence structure, don't just insult me like that. I'm at least not so lazy that I'd leave the 'e' off of "be safe". I've never worked near Brookhaven a day in my life, and I'm definitely not in SOD.

I'm not still here because I have "too many years vested", I haven't even made MPO yet. I'm here because I chose to be here not too long ago fully understanding how shitty it was. And I chose to stay because I still love what I do, blame it on rookie excitement and dream fulfillment I guess. Not because I joined in the "glory days" and simply don't have the balls to quit. If that's what you're implying.

It actually insults me that someone that writes like a teenager in summer school would actually attempt to imitate me. I'm hurt bud, I really am. You're probably one of those 10+ year slugs that can't pass the promotional exam and stays afloat by hiding from calls and trying to take credit for his partner's J1's. Get a life.

BE Safe out there.

Regarding the constant pending calls, a media story is about to come out from weeks of monitoring radio traffic and the county's response (or lack thereof). I'd guess SOD will be required to respond to those pending events once this story airs.

Hey Sgts. hope you're ready to have the entire watch list staffed by rookies straight off FTO...

Major White told us we could not take our assigned cars to a part time job. Well he certainly uses his take home car for county jobs and personal use. In fact he just drives his assigned car to pick up checks for jobs that he gets paid for and does not even work the job. He was in a school a few years ago and did not work but was getting paid for being there while he was in another state.....this guy is useless and just likes to talk down to people and belittle his officers.

Well, Center precinct has a quota now. 2 tickets a day. Warnings don't count, parking tickets don't count. If you fail to produce, a Sergeant will be riding along with you. They handed out stat sheets in roll call this morning that had every officer's stats for the month on it. What's funny is they told us to hand the stat sheets back in and wouldn't let us leave with them. What is the brass afraid of?

I know what you are thinking, I'm not one of the people who's stats are in the shitter. I'm just tired of hearing about stats in roll call every day. It still puts pressure on every officer, even the ones that are not slacking.

I don't care if my fellow officers write shitloads of tickets or none. It won't be long before the command staff at center precinct are contacted by attorneys.

MARCH 25, 2014 AT 5:19 PM, Sergeants aren't looking forward to all the rookies... it will be nice to have a full or even half full watch list but, with rookies come rookie mistakes, indecision, 41's, incident packets and complaints.

On top of that....they're already upset about penalized for being sergeants when it came time to give out take homes... Totally ignored were the following: their time of service, their rank, the headaches associated with their stepping up and becoming supervisors and their coming in first and leaving last.

Be prepared for more sergeants leaving and watches being led by rookie sergeants....your job is about to become that much more difficult.

Anonymous said...

Tucker,

I thinks the point was to have officers drive the cars to part-times to show visibility, a force multiplyer if you will. Stand-by that will change.

Anonymous said...

WOW..............So what they tell you in GCIC certification is not true. If you violate the GCIC rules, here comes jail, prison and a large fine.

So you get transfer until the heat blows over and then assigned back to your old position.

What about the criminal case in Gwinnett where the victim was assaulted do to someone furnish tag information?

TAC uses their take home cars to patrol off duty in apartment complexes for private security companies. Then you tell me that I can't park mine in front of a wal-mart that I'm working at! WOW!

Anonymous said...

To 6:25 pm, I heard they are suspending Sgt's part time jobs if the officers don't bring in two tickets a day. Sounds like a quota to me. LAPD paid out 10 million for a quota lawsuit.

Anonymous said...

How does someone not get fired after illegally running someone on ncic, then giving that illegally obtained information to a friend who Ends Up using it to track someone down and beat them almost to death? Someone in ended up the hospital because a certain female tac officer provided illegally obtained information to someone looking for revenge. Doesn't that make the Dekalb officer party to the crime of aggravated assault? Not only was this female not fired, she was just sent back to her specialized unit on a blue order! I guess there's a different set of rules for the cute light skinned females.

Anonymous said...

Everyone there is too cowardly to file a lawsuit.

Anonymous said...

Wow.....at least two veteran sergeants have bailed this month....are there more?

Guess 3% and the promise of a take home (after their subordinates get take homes) was not enough to get them to NOT take their experience and go elsewhere.

How many more sergeants and officers will leave after we find out the specifics associated with Open Enrollment?

Anonymous said...

So here's a couple questions....first....why are a good many of the officers issued take home cars, not taking them home?? Second, why are the FTOS who have the take home cars parking their take home and tying up another unit because they don't want their rookies driving their car.....doesn't this defeat the entire purpose of the cars?

First Responder said...

To hell with Dekalb...arrive on time....punch the clock...answer calls and give the citizens what they paid for....THE MINIMUM!... punch the clock and go home.

I'm adding to my pension and counting the time....done with above and beyond.... why should I care about busting my ass when they think so little of the officers and sergeants.

I can understand no one wants to go to CID and work 5 days a week and have weekend duty and carry a huge case load. It makes sense but why is it that no one wants to to to special operations they don't have a case load, oh wait tho the chief over special operations is an idiot he has made them work 5 days a week and you have to work weekends every third week. No one wants to work for a command staff that just tells their officers they can go back to uniform and just yells about tickets all the time and screws with your schedule every other week, please just back back to the Alabama play Army and make those people unhappy and leave us alone.

Anonymous said...

No one wants to go to CID because like being promoted to sergeant, it is a lateral transfer with headaches! There is no reason to leave uniform or test for sergeant.

This county is corrupt, disorganized, mismanaged, fraudulent, criminal, inconsistent, tumultuous, disorderly, misinformed, super political, understaffed, and deeply troubled. Did I miss anything?

Decatur is filled with criminals from the top down, and Cedric the assclown is a joke of epic proportions who has done more than his share to shake this county down for thousands of dollars. But the citizens and media sure do love this attention whore, who knows absolutely NOTHING about policing, and more about "swagger".

This county refuses to issue officers yearly raises, instead they give bullshit "incentives". They will never revamp the pension plan, give take homes to all officers, especially officers that are driving more than 30 miles to work each way. Especially officers that work outside the county. This point system of issuing take home cars is a fucking joke.

Why am I, or any other officer for that matter going to continue to bust their ass for absolutely nothing in return from this cesspool of a county? No raises, bonuses, better benefits, no commendation letters for going well above and beyond, etc etc.

Officers are constantly yelled at for not conducting traffic stops and writing citations and generating revenue for this shithole county. How the hell can we when we have 20+ dispatched calls in a day routinely? At least six of those calls requiring J2!

No I am not going to do any traffic stops, nor will I go out of my way to line the pockets of the assholes in this fucking county. GO fuck yourself.

So for the citizens of DeKalb County, sorry, but you get what you pay for. We as DeKalb County police officers are SEVERELY underpaid, mistreated, and we're tired of it!

The problem is this county doesn't give two shits why so many good officers are leaving. The individual officers reasons for leaving are varied, but I assure you it is for better benefits, better salary, better working environment, (not the ghettos of DeKalb), take home cars, and a whole lot less stress and political bullshit.

So for the officers that are still working for this county, I truly feel sorry for you. Get out of this filthy garbage dump while you still can, and ENJOY your life somewhere else. Don't listen to the Lieutenants or Sergeants at the precinct levels, the grass IS MUCH BETTER AND MUCH GREENER OUTSIDE OF DEKALB!
