We would follow him through the doors of Hell to fight the battle. That's all I got to say about the man.

Chief Burgess was a legend for sure and loved the department as his own family. When I was shot, he was by my side like my own dad and saw that I was treated right as well as my family until I could return to work. I wish I could be half the chief that he was to his department. May God's comfort be with the family.

Rest in peace my brother and my friend. You did an excellent job as a police officer, family friend and most important, a human being.

Our condolences to the Burgess family and to his Dachshunds.

RIP... though he was before my time... I often saw him while at center precinct.

Chief Burgess was there before during and after many other legends from the old school that made Dekalb a great place to live & work started and retired.
Once upon a time it was an honor to serve with the DKPD until every Chief after Chief Moody left trashed the place with the help of corrupt politicians.
Gone but never forget the memories, RIP Sir, you deserve it!!

I always wondered what happened to him after he retired. The last chief at DeKalb who actually made the decisions on how DKPD was run, and officers followed them out of logic and respect.

Chief Burgess handed me my badge and sshook my hand. I was never prouder or felt more honored than when he wished me, in sincerity, good luck. So I say to you Chief, God bless you. I am sure that there is a trash can or 2 up there that you can kick around. You will be missed.

He love the troops and always went out of his way to talk to them. It made us feel like he was one of us in this job.

When I was injured on duty, Chief Burgess invaded the DeKalb General ICU like General Patton's invading army. He truly loved each and every one of us. Rest in peace.

A great chief and fine man, the guard detail in heaven now has a new Chief.

When I look back on all those years and what all transpired in DeKalb County, I think we actually DID follow him through the gates of hell. I will never forget him saying over the radio "stop em, they're jumping the medi-an" on Memorial Drive during one of the "freaknik events".
He was definitely an old school, real genuine cop, and it was a pleasure to work for the man.

You were truly a great man, a brother and a Cops Cop....You were a deer friend and you will be missed deeply. Our prayers and condolences are with your family.....

Your comments are about the best tribute that can be bestowed on an individual.
God speed chief! I hope to meet you on the flip side.

Yea he was the best chief I ever had the honor to work under, but isn't it sad that after 45 years of service and dedication there has only been 15 post about him legacy.

This department is not what it used to be, we leave, we retire, and we die, then we are forgotten about.

Only a select few will remember you when we are gone!

Who's gonna run the blog now?

Anonymous said...

No, Slamin Ethel, you have it a touch wrong. I believe you mean we leave, we retire, we are forgotten about, watch our department be destroyed and then we die.

RIP Chief. You were a great person and a great chief...
