For all officers who do not have the FOP Legal Plan you are playing Russian Roulette every time you go 10-41. I will make this short and sweet. With the FOP Legal Plan if you have an issue (civil, administrative, criminal) you call the attorney DIRECTLY. Unlike the PBA, there is no middle man; there is no one to weigh the value of your case before they approve representation. You are covered - period. Only catch is you have to be a member of the FOP because this is a member benefit. Yes it costs extra; so what. What is your career worth? If you are too stupid to not realize this, then when you get in a jam - right when you least expect it (ask the 6 APD officers if they thought enforcing the curfew law was going to get them fired) - you're on your own.

Rest assured of this as well, if there is even the slightest question about whether what you did was in line with policy or the law - you are the expendable one. If you dont think a DA, in this environment, in an election year, will not hang your ass out to dry, you are a fool. If you bypass this opportunity, you’re an idiot - sorry, I cant emphasize this enough. Every time you go 10-41 without coverage is another shift you are putting your future, and if you have a family, their future on the line. I am not pushing the FOP per se, but you have to join them to get the coverage, and its not immediate. Dont waste any more time. Think about this before you click and go on to the next picture in your instagram or twitter feed - you are being watched by people who want to see you fail. They are recording your every interaction. Don’t let their version of what happened be the final outcome of your career. Don’t be stupid. BTW, I’m retired so I get to sit back and say, “Damn, I hope he had legal protection.”

Cole was an in my academy, the nicest guy and I hate hearing this about him. I’m gone now but the above FOP statement is spot on. I did 16 years and had an incident. I hope it all works out for my brother Cole. Young guys need representation these days.
