Great information and thanks for sharing it.

To the public safety pros on this blog: Is there something like a "benchmark" ratio of command staff to patrol officers for a metro like ATL? Seems everyone agrees that we need more patrols and I'm wondering what sort of command staff size would be "implied" to support the current number of officers and then the desired number of officers (+100, +200, ???) down the road.

The question I ask is how did Chief Bolton become aware of these fine leaders that Chief Pennington at Atlanta Police somehow over looked?

It’s hard to understand, these new commanders know only the ones in the inside circle. How can you look at the officers and supervisors who have been here for years and expect respect from them?

I guess its all about money. The next question is where is the money coming for this entourage called a command staff? We probably have over a million dollars in command staff salaries, yet crime is at a record high pace.

I know we are sending all the supervisors to Houston Police to learn WHAT?
There has to be a connection with Lee Brown involved in this decision.

Where is the money for this Houston Adventure coming from? We have new recruits having to wear old vests, and officers needing vests replaced are put on HOLD.

I wish I could have worked here when this police department was one of the best. No, I don't want to be that old, I would just like being known as one of the officers during those times.

I can only hope I stay here long enough to see the resurrection of this department.
We have a lot of good people still left; we only need the leadership to put us back to what we deserved.

One passing note, we all thought Vernon Jones would be great for the police department when he first ran for office, Mr. Law and Order- pro- police. He ended up being the demised of this police department. I just hope we are careful who we support this time around.

Under Dick Hand this department was second to none. When other agencies, such as Rockdale would get into a 10-80, if the chase ventured into Dekalb, the perps would stop and give up. One even said when asked, why did you just stop. His answer, "I knew I was in Dekalb County and I wasnt about to run from DK..Those cops dont play". And they didn't. Growing up in Dekalb it was just a given that you did not mess with the Dekalb County Police. They demanded respect and they got it, from everyone. And you had better not even think about applying if you had a record. Now, they just want bodies. Most academies would start with 25 to 30 officers, and graduate half that many. If you were not Dekalb material, you didnt make it. Instructors such as Becker and Irwin, under the leadership of Col. Howington made sure you were made of the right stuff to become Dekalb's finest, or you were shown the door. It truly saddens me to see what this department has become. I just hope that one day this department will again be known nationwide for its fine upstanding officers, and not the laughing stock the we now seem to be....

Are Changes Coming?

They have moved Deputy Chief Burrows down to the 3rd floor. I'm guessing because he is the most senior of all the command staff in place. Someone said there was writing on the bathroom walls at headquarters and that soon we would have the new Majors from APD as new Deputy Chiefs.

He has less than six months to make those promotions.

Could Deputy Chief Burrows and Deputy Chief Horner be his next targets for replacement?
