Bolton is in search of 5, count ‘em, 5 sergeants to become F.T.O. Administrative Sergeants to Lt. Kaulbach who heads up the Field Training Program, one sergeant from each precinct. Good God, how does he come up with these ideas? Did he inhale too much smoke watching his personal Magic Bus burn to the ground? Is the man insane?
Why does he want one sergeant from each precinct? North Precinct hasn’t gotten any recruits from the last 2 academies. I bet he tosses that one to someone special.
These sergeants work hours will be 07:00 – 17:00 with either FSS or SSM off; of course you can throw all holidays off into that too. How bout a take home car?
This idea is the product of one of the now defunct wasteful trips our command staff took to Houston. It appears Houston Texas P.D. has a similar program. But has anyone told Bolton that Houston P.D. has over 5,000 police officers and their last academy graduated 71 officers with at least five more academies graduating over the next 6 months? That’s over 400 officers! Hell, we don’t have 400 uniform officers working the streets including all 5 precincts.
We are short handed on Sergeants as it is now. Most shifts work with only 2 sergeants per day, with a 3rd one thrown in about 3 days a week. These sergeants are worn out at the end of the shift daily, and now Bolton wants to take 5 away.
Bolton continues to demonstrate his distaste and jealously of the uniform patrolman working the streets. This is because Bolton was never a true uniform beat officer. He cared only for his political ambition, which he was a failure in Dallas. He will never live up to any of our patrol officers or sergeants.

They're rushing so many thru to get warm bodies on the street, they might just need these Sgt's to babysit them through the process.
Remember, its quantity...not quality.
Doesn't matter how many Sergeants you have "overwatching" the FTO program. We don't have enough FTOs left at the Precincts to properly train the rookies. Key word is properly. In theory the FTO program is good, in reality the few FTOs are being burned outed too fast. All the veteran MPOs are either leaving, going to CID or Special Ops, or just don't want to train any more. What does it take to become an FTO and maybe get you one day off a week when the vacation schedule allows it? A long application paperwork process that includes a letter why you want to be an FTO. How do you tell them "please send paperwork back to me at least twice and give me more paperwork to do along with the regular shift reports" nicely? I think this goes back to the old concept of "need more indians then chiefs" As a FTO of several years I understand the need to train the rookies as they are my backup on the next call. But I'm just worn out and it seems like there are less and less FTOs every day and the rookies keep showing up. Just my two cents.
I can understand and relate to you anonymous, it goes without saying, I am also burned out as a new FTO, and I just started!
With all the "new" and "young" officers our next issue/concern is... what about the cars? There are NO CARS....and the cars we have are being driven 24 hours a day non-stop (some cars have 119k miles) needless to say the engines sound horrible!! we also have to wait for a car for 1 1/2 hours after roll call this is ridiculous! and once you get on the street and work for a total of 6 hours (out of 10 hours) -only to be called to come in early so the next shift can come out.
And we wonder why our crime rate has gone up?
My questions: where is the union and the media to bring this to light?
Oh and another question...what does the tax-payers have to say about offiers having to sit in the parking lot and wait for cars and having 911 calls on hold until the next shift come out.
Did I sign up for this?
Why pull sergeants from the streets? Word is District 1 is so short of sergeants, that precincts are having borrow a sergeant from other precincts just to cover the watch. Horner is an idiot in step with Bolton. Why not pull a sergeant out Property who have 3, Code Enforcement who has 2, who knows how many in Background. This place is ridiculous! Sad thing is someone is going to get hurt or worse yet, killed.
Dear Anonymous,
Where are the citizens? We were out, in force earlier in the year, begging for the BOC to properly fund the police department with compensation and cars.
Check which commissioners did not support the measure. The same ones running an election. Can't get much in an election year.
Thanks for all you do, with as little as you do it with.

You guy's are still just preaching to the choir. If you were getting you message out the news media would do stories about it. Come up with a plan to get more public with your issues.
It's not preaching to the choir. I can tell you the local news media WILL NOT do a story just because you tell them something is dirty in DeKalb. Trust me. Seriously.
DeKalb needs a change in leadership. A change from elected officials down to those they apoint to run things. DeKalb Police needs to be run by a DeKalb Cop. There are only a few of those left who are qualified to do it.
I pray for you guy's safety and hope for your future.
SOUNDS TO ME THE MAJORITY OF YOU COMPLAINING PROBABLY HAVE BEEN WITH DEKALB POLICE A SHORT TIME. TRUST ME, I COMPLAIN PROBABLY MORE THAN ANY OF YOU. I GO OUT ON THE LIMB SAYING OUT OF (4) COMPLAINTS LISTED HERE, I STILL HAVE MORE TIME. POINT THAT I'M ABOUT TO MAKE YOU MAY AGREE OR YOU MAY NOT! FIRST, TAKE HOME CARS ARE NOT BEING ABUSED BY WORKING A PART TIME JOB. IT'S AN EXTENSION OF THE OFFICER, AS THE UNIFORM EACH OF YOU WEAR AT YOUR PART TIME. SO TRYING TO MAKE A DETECTIVE,ICP UNIT, OR ANYONE ELSE PAY FOR THE GAS IS INSANE!!! SECOND, FTO'S NEED TO BE WITH THE DEPARTMENT ATLEAST (5) YEARS. THERE ARE TO MANY YOUNG OFFICERS TRAINING YOUNG OFFICERS WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING YET. THIRD, A SARGEANT FROM EACH PRECINCT LOOKING OVER THE PRECINCT FTO PROGRAM IS NOT A BAD IDEA. HOWEVER, ALL ISSUES ABOUT CONCERNS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE LT. IN CHARGE OF THE FTO. THESE SGT.'S DO NOT NEED SPECIAL TREATMENT,SPECIAL DAYS OFF. THEY SHOULD BE A POINT OF CONTACT ONLY. FOURTH, TOO MANY SARGEANTS(LOL)!!!! HOW ABOUT QUALIFIED SARGEANTS WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE TO START!!!! THERE IS ATLEAST A HALF A DOZEN EVERY TWO YEARS THAT SOMEHOW GET PROMOTED. HOWEVER, YOUR VETERAN OFFICERS DON'T! THERE ARE SO MANY VETERAN OFFICERS THAT HAVE BEEN WITH THIS DEPARTMENT OVER 10 YEARS BUSTING THEIR BUTTS....BUT HAVE TO LOOK AT A (5) YEAR SARGEANT. WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT PICTURE IN WHOLE!! THERE IS ALOT SAID HERE, I COULD WRITE MORE! I'M DONE WITH IT!
Whether we can afford it or not (from both a monitary and a resource standpoint) the theme set by our leadership is "titles, perks, and everything you can get".
Good for the officers with take homes....they're just doing their jobs and have the ability, the flexibility and the desire to get one of those titles.
It's all a game! If you don't have a take home, you're either not playing the game or don't have the desire to get into it.
It's just a game.
We're so short officers now, you have to give them something or look the other way in order to keep them.
So they use it on a part time! Atleast they are wearing a Dekalb County PD badge. They could go somewhere else.
Atleast the car is visible in the county and deterring crime.
It's just a game.
Ummm last I checked you werent supposed to take your work car to a part time anyway unless your job was scheduled just before or after your shift...I could be wrong
I just saw K.K. Jones in a Dekalb Sheriff's Office uniform, didn't he get fired from Marta P.D.? I saw him on the news a few months ago where they were talking about him using his take home care against Marta policy.
I've been wondering, who is paying for this new "VIP" program. What in the world was Tebo thinking? Sgts. don't even have county cell phones. And what citizen in DeKalb County is really going to put a magnet on the doors of their vehicle and be a target for perps. Umm, can we say 34's. Not only that but someone is going to get hurt at the county's expense. I've just been wondering what commissioners "if any" passed this program.
