What really is the purpose of the DeKalb Police Alliance?

With the dreadful news of the economy lately, we were sitting around wondering about our family’s future, particularly if something should happen to us. Noting our chances of getting killed in the line of duty is increased because of our critical manpower shortage in uniform, this making our job more dangerous than necessary.

Anyway, we came across an organization in Chicago Illinois called the Hundred Club of Chicago (www.100clubchicago.org). In a nut shell, in Chicago, when an officer is killed in the line of duty, they present to the officer’s spouse a check in the amount of $50,000.00 within 24 hours of the death. They also provide an educational assistance program to all spouses and children. The educational program is for higher education which includes trade or vocational school, college, university and graduate school. Pretty straight forward.

So we Googled the DeKalb Police Alliance. First noted is their website, dekalbpolicealliance.org, is no longer active. Go figure. After more searching we were able to find some information under some obscured website called GuideStar.org.

For the year ending 2007, they list accomplishments of providing a 3-year $100,000 life insurance policy for all full time certified police officers in DeKalb County. Our questions are: Is this for in line of duty death only? If the $100,000 is paid over three years, then how long before the widow or widower is handed a check? Or is it given in monthly installments? How much red tape is involved?

Their objectives for 2008 were to make sure that the police officers are well-trained, and that their families are supported, and get this; raise funds to help purchase bicycles for DKPD to support their initiative of community-based policing. WTF? (and we don't mean off days of Wed, Thur, Fri)

But what really caught our eye was the total revenue for 2007 was $238,066 with total expenses of $206,623. Specific expenses are not broken down. It is an assumption the families of Stepnowski, Barker and Bryant were paid approximately $33.000.00 each. This would leave $107.623.00 in expenses for.......what?

Just wondering.

You shuold contact the widows and get their input... It's important information for us to all have BEFORE a tragedy takes place. For example, did you know that health insurance for the spouse/families expires 30 days after the death of a Dekalb officer? Imagine the situation those poor people found themselves in on day 31.
We need to know what to expect and who's going to take care of US after our loved-ones have taken care of the county.

What expenses would they have to total over $100,000.00? I tried their website too and it doesn’t work. So we know one thing they are not paying. Do they have an office and all the expenses that go along with it? Is anybody getting a salary? You have raised a very good issue. Show us the money!

Speaking of the Dekalb Police Alliance wasn't the "Policemans Ball" suppose to be in September? Hmmmm....I wonder why it didnt go down? Any ideas? Chief to busy putting out his fire on his RV? Margarita Williams too drunk already? Replaced the ball with a open house? No more money left from bicycle purchases? Geeeez....

The next Police Officers Ball is January 24, 2009.

I wonder what her salary is of the director of this organization. I would guess that it's more than what is requested. We are a world of scams.

Well we need to help all the future unemployed people that are leaving DeKalb. Look at CEO Jones payroll.

I would take a wild guess of somewhere around 100 grand?

I just read the post on the DeKalb alliance... I cannot speak for Latoya or Yolanda... But I never received anything from them.

A comment was also made about health insurance. It actually ceases the MOMENT the officer is killed. It is reinstated once the pension is approved. I found this out by going to the doctor and being told my plan was canceled. I called HR and was told the moment the officer is killed my health insurance stopped. However like I said it was reinstated with the
pension and I have health insurance until I die through the county and the cost of the insurance is at a retiree’s price and is automatically taken out
each month.

Atlanta has a 300 Club. The week Step was killed I was handed a check for $5000.00 dollars to cover immediate expenses, his parents were also given a check and I assume for the same amount.

Just my 2 cents

NOTE FROM DEKALB OFFICERS.com: From what we have learned so far, the Police Alliance life insurance started in 2007. Dennis was killed in 2006. As of this writing, we are not able to contact the Police Alliance or Nicole Blackshear. She was appointed by Vernon to run the day to day operations. From all accounts, she works in Vernon’s office.

Kellie,

Step was a good man and a good officer. I really miss seeing his smiling face come out of a car that just stopped behind my traffic stop.

He was always there to check on you or answer a question.

For what its worth....My little girls still remember "Officer Step" in their nightly prayers.

Can somebody please give me the story on why Keisha Williams is refered to as Margarita Williams I would assume that she likes to drink! And if this is the case she must have been busted by the cops.

Nicole Blackshear is Vernon's Deputy Chief of Staff.
