DeKalb traffic tickets disappear. $90 million to $135 million in uncollected fines

How can one county, be run by so many incompetent people? Vernon and the (Honorable?) Judge R. Joy Walker should be held accountable and prosecuted.

Not only is the police department 911 computer system a total failure, it is now brought to light the Recorders Court computer system is a failure also.

Not only do they have incompetent people managing and working in the court, just as we do running the department, we are betting untrained, self taught so called technicians are piece milling the system together just as the police department.

The article fails to mentioned how Southern Automated Systems, the computer software company, was awarded its contract. What is its connection to Vernon?

Not once does the article state anyone will be held accountable. Judge Walker's answer to correct it? Retrain the incompetent and throw more money at it. Truely stomach turning.

And just think, Judge R. Joy Walker thinks she is competent enough to be a superior court judge where she would be in a position to deny someone of their property, liberty or life.

The public should be demanding a federal investigation!

$90 Million to $135 Million...why do I picture the mad doctor from Austin Powers tossing out that number?

Hmmmm....bet a lot of camera equipped patrol cars, tasers and laptops for those patrol cars could have been purchased with those funds.

Heck...with that much money, we could afford to buy patrol cars AND Magic Buses for each watch!

(Side Note - I've heard we can't use that money for the Police, but that would sure free up money from elsewhere in the county budget)

Gotta say as a longtime county resident, the DeKalb Police Dept. does an awful, awful job with traffic enforcement. I don't blame all the officers out on patrol, but I do blame some. It's never been a priority with DCPD administration. Speeding and reckless driving is out of control in DeKalb, whether on the highways or county roads. And I can name ten intersections where drivers consistently blow red lights. And I've seen county police officers at an intersection and not even blink when a car blows a red light.

GWINNETT COUNTY: Traffic accidents drop with presence of drug task force
By Andria Simmons
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thursday, November 06, 2008

Gwinnett County police say there has been a marked decrease in traffic collisions since its Highway Interdiction Team —- primarily focused on nabbing drug traffickers —- began patrolling the interstates early this year.

There were 500 fewer accidents on I-85 and I-985 during the six-month period from March 1 to Oct. 1, compared to the same time frame last year, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli. The number of accidents dropped from 1,905 in 2007 to 1,434 in 2008. That is about two fewer accidents every day, Schiralli said.

“It appears that the high visibility of patrols is making an impact on the drivers along the interstate,” Schiralli said. “The mere presence of an active law enforcement unit such as H.I.T. is influencing driver behavior without interfering with the criminal interdiction mission.” Gwinnett police believe the department’s DUI Task Force, which lately has been concentrating its efforts on the interstates, also is contributing to the decrease in motor vehicle accidents.

The Highway Interdiction Team was formed earlier this year to intercept drugs and other criminal activity on the interstates.

Since February, six officers on the team have seized more than $12 million worth of drugs and arrested more than 60 people on a variety of charges, said supervisor Sgt. Jim Price.

The H.I.T. targets aggressive drivers and equipment violations more often than speeders. However, people are slowing down and driving more carefully when they see the patrol cars, Price said.

“We may sit in the same spot for 30, 40, 50 minutes before we stop somebody, but everybody going by sees the police,” said Price. “We noticed immediately the reduction in the accidents when we started getting out, especially on the two-lane portion north of I-985. We’re out here, everybody knows we’re out here and they’re driving more cautiously.”

Who picked Judge Walker for the job? Never mind I think I know.

A federal investigation would be pointless. There is no law against being stupid.

this is to anonymous who thinks the police do a awful job with traffic enforcement.07 76 fatal crashes 08 38 07 was one of are highest years. since 08 we have cut down on speeders, accidents, etc because of the hard work by us officers. dont knock what we are doing everyday because you dont like how tebo is running things, we cant stand him either, next time dont vote for someone like mr. jones and we would not have had too deal with this for the past 8 years.

For whatever reason, I miss Traffic Court on my assigned day. I get a two day suspension without pay.

What's the penalty for losing $90 million to $135 million in tickets?

Is there a penalty and will there be a formal investigation?

Since the State hasn't been getting their cut, you'd think they would have the GBI crawling all over the place.

Will Ellis add this to the forensic audit everyone has been calling for in relation to the spending of county dollars?

Time will tell.

My money is on business as usual. A couple of honest individuals will take the fall and the responsible parties will be promoted to higher office.

It's the Dekalb way.

Hope is our only answer. We cannot get any further down with this current leadership in place. I hope one day we can look at this department at a leader and not as something that an embarrasment.

Well look at what the current CEO has left the new CEO balance sheet. Just more tax payer dollars at work. If its not their money who cares.

Remember when..... you learned as a Cub scout or a Boy Scout that you leave a place better than you found it.

Can you just imagine leaving a camp site trashed after an overnight?

My troop leader would have skinned us alive if we left it the way Veron is leaving Dekalb County.
