For those who didn't go to the public hearing for the 2009 Budget, or watch it TV, Steen Miles (part of the Ellis transition team) attended the hearing, and spoke in support of a Public Safety Director. She also heard support for the Public Safety Director from the South DeKalb Coalition, and many leaders from neighborhood associations and communities around DeKalb.

Steen is right, the 4 commissioners heard what they wanted to hear. It is my belief the they had their minds made up before they walked in the room that morning, and before they ever heard extended public coment. It is truly a shame when the voice of citizens doesn't impact an elected officials decision.

Additionally, I heard the support of a Public Safety Director from so many of Burrell's Budget Meetings, which the commissioners attended.

Citizens really need to question why the 4 commissioners voted the way they did.

The Johnson, Stokes, May and Sutton-Barnes are not on my Fantasy Team for a Better DeKalb.

Larry Johson leads the foursome of Johnson, "Clueless" Connie Stokes, Lee "Bankrupt Business Owner" May and Sharon Sutton-Barnes.

Both Johnson and May want to be CEO, and are intentionally trying to discredit Burrell Ellis every opportunity they get. Johnson has a Vernon Jones-like inflated opinion of himself.

CEO Ellis has done the right thing with axing Bolton and Keisha Margarita (hopefully Rancider and Don Frank are next).

If you support CEO Ellis, have your friends and family e-mail and call Johnson, Stokes, May and Sutton-Barnes and demand they support CEO Ellis when it comes to public safety.

This my first post as a non-anonymous user. I have 24 years with the county, I am not police services but work closely with them on many issues. I get around the county alot, and probably have one of the more balanced views of county functions and services. Just read the entire online version of the Champion and I was impressed. Where the AJC tends to research and publish DeKalb stories from the desk in downtown ATL, the Champions writers are DeKalb citizens in the thick of it. I do not agree with the argument that DeKalb police services needs a Director of public Safety, what DeKalb needs is a competent Chief of Police and an able staff. CEO Ellis is commended for his work in firing Bolton and moving O'Brien into the acting Chiefs position. Nothing could of done more to revive morale within the department. With the county budget shrinking, do we really need another 130 grand director?
