Burrell Ellis Makes Right Decision

The C.E.O. is making the right decision by taking away all non-essential take home vehicles, which the majority fall into that category.

A few examples of people or units that have take home cars and are never called out or it is never anticipated they will be called out are: ICP, Inspections, Motor Officers, Staff Aides, Taxi Unit, Record Room Director, TRT Commanders, TAC, Special Ops and Property Crimes detectives that are not on call. You probably could throw in Property Crimes supervisors too.

Maybe with money saved, updated equipment can be purchased or it will contribute to the merit pay increases being put back in place.

As a taxpayer, I'd like to see the list of every take home behicle to always be online.

No more Tebo's, no more Keisha Margarita's. Everything needs to be out in the open from this point on.

There is still a lot of shady spending and questionable behavior in the county Sheriff's Dept. I hope this blog keeps exposing problems with the Sheriff's Dept.

What about the Property Room MPO's what does PK need with a van anyway. Or I guess it's to haul plants from Walmart in.

Hell, why don't we just take them from the capts, majors, and deputy chiefs. They don't get called out either. If we are going to follow your logic let's be fair across the board. This is not going to free up any more money. The county is fiscally irresponsible and is look for any scape goats it can to take the blame off them for their lack of governing .

I agree with some of your logic but some of the TAC officers and other Special Ops units do get called out. TSU is part of special ops and they have been called out several times. SWAT is part of special ops and so is Aerial Support. Should we take the cars from them. There are many units in Special ops that do get called out. I do agree with most of the others listed not needing cars like, Property Room, Taxi units and a few others but leave TAC, SWAT, TSU, and some of the others alone because they are needed.

I'm guessing for the police department around a savings of say 100k-300k. It's not like your parking the cars and they won't be driven. There will be cases where some will be driven even more such as ICP cars, they will be driven 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. It's been proven that departments with assigned vehicles actually SAVE money over the long run. It's just the initial start up that gets you.

As a side note I like how the county was able to find the $250k in savings in the police department for the needed position of Public Safety Director.

ICP has been called in more than TAC over the past year, the command staff uses them for call outs more now because they know they have cars, county phone and fifty bodies.

The city of Tacoma, Washington did a take home car study and showed that they saved 8 million dollars over several years in car cost by assigning officers cars. You save on gas, repairs, and cars stay in service longer.

All of those who bitch about the take home cars are just mad because they dont have them. Curently there are 2008 cars with 130K miles on them. If everyone from MPO and up were issued cars they last approximately 6 years if you have an average of 400 miles per week. Folks do the math, right now the cars average over 2000 miles a week because they are driven 24/7. Granted the up front money is costly but that is made up over a 5 year period. Just another example of how poor money management. People placed in high positions because who they date, or hang out with, not because they earned it.

Yes, he made the right decision but let's hope the county commission does not waste the savings someplace else.Just becaause you get called out does not mean you need to take a car home. If a chopper pilot gets called out, he flies the chopper. Thats all. No need for a car at all. If a major crimes detective gets called out he will have to go several places. Certain detectives need assigned take home cars but not all of them.Detectives in all units that are on call need to take a car home when they are on call only.

Sincw we are trying to make the department better through this blog, how about this. Nothing at all against the dope unit but..the uniformed division catched pure damn hell from the public about all of the dope houses in neighborhoods. The uniformed division can not work dope in uniform and in marked cars but the uniformed division catches all and I mean all of the shots about the drug dealers in the neighborhoods. Uniform does not have the man porer to put guys in cool cars and street clothes. The dope unit needs to work these dope house's and street level drug dealers. The dope unit supervisors or command staff need to attend these community meetings where the uniformed guys constantly get trashed by the public about street level dope dealers and crack houses. I keep hearing that our dope unit is too busy to handle streel level dopers because thy are always tagging along with the FEDS to get the big stuff and big dealers, mostly becaus the county get's a cut to the general fund on what is RICO's or confiscated. I'm asking, is this true?...and why io all of this dumpped on uniform. The center Pct Major was absoutly correct with what he said at that community meeting a while back. He can't do anything about the crack house in the citizens hood or the Majors hood. The narc squad needs to take the heat on this don't they? Uniform get's the friggin heat on a hell of a lot more. Take some heat off. There are the same doped dealers in south Dekalb. Scottdale and Lynwood Park that have always been there. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong....or offer a solution.

I'm so sick of these 2900 badge numbers acting like they know everything.

No rebuttal. Must be true. Just how many dope houses are in Dekalb county and who is doing something about it?
