Kudoh's to them for handling it and prosecuting. Too many times things have been handled internally or swept under the carpet. If serious, the officer simply resigns.

I'd make a smart comment, but I know that DKPD be in the news again before long.

Nothing that I'm aware of on the burner, but I just believe it is just a matter of time before one of our officers does something outrageous and thinks he or she is entitled to do it or immune from prosecution because "they have a badge".

is it possible to track how many officers/deputies were fired in 2008 compaired to 2009? then separate it down to if it was criminal or not, or if they got arrested or not. Someday we will go back to quality over quantity. Lots of wasted money and man hours training thugs to be better thugs

That's exactly what I thought when I read that crap. Just what we need. Another yo yo shows up in the news. Where do all these jackasses come from? Even though he is a half a notch above a security guard ? maybe? , the public links him with us.

I bet Crime Analysis could get those stats for ya concerning officer arrests in '08 vs '09........... Oh wait Crime Analysis got disbanded because of all the bickering on this website. It disgusts me about all the infighting on this site. We're ALL officers. There is no need to call units out on this site. There are a few units that have been affected by this site. The stuff y'all say has consequences. Bolton may be gone but he was just part of the problem. We are left here to pick up the pieces and I don't see the pieces coming back together. On another note how about those raises we're getting because of the new "take home" policy? What!? No raises and the Sgt/Lt aides still have take homes?!?!? Surely you jest!

Oooh..Cry me a river.....play me a symphony.

Do you hear that sound? It's my little fiddle playing "My Heart Bleeds for You".

Crime Analysis, if it is truly gone, was disbanded because it didn't bring anything to the table.

I don't need a specialized group to tell me that there will be a shooting on McAfee or Candler, a robbery on Memorial, a shoplifting at Perimeter during a holiday weekend or a burlgary on "fill in the appropriate street from your precinct" Blvd...... If they bring value, they will survive the light of day and scrutiny.

This website will not impact the existence of a valuable unit.

If they are not bringing value, they will go the way of General Motors and Chrysler.

Welcome to the big leagues. Either you bring something to the table or you fade into the woodwork.

Hopefully the days of specialized units reporting to people in positions "created to give power and perks to made people" are gone.

We have had and still do waste too much money on politically correct BS that doesn't CRUSH CRIME.

Rock on Acting Chief....

I have a few questions about this incident, but I'm not in law enforcement, so maybe people here could give me answers.

It sounds like Steib was off-duty when he visited this prisoner. I've never visited anyone in DeKalb's jail, so is it even possible for a visitor to sexually assault an inmate? Aren't there guards present during visits? Even if it was a "show me yours" thing, how does that go unnoticed by the guards, or other inmates and visitors?

I looked up Steib in DeKalb's OJS and saw that he was arrested twice in DeKalb (and who knows how many times as a juvenile). He was arrested in 2003 for Failure To Appear (you have to see his mugshot for that one). He was also arrested in 2004 for Probation Violation. There is no record of what he was on probation for. So, is there no rule against hiring someone to be a jailer who has a criminal record?

Aides still have take home cars?Well how the hell do you expect them to pick up their bosses dry cleaning?

He was on duty when all this happened. You have to know the layout of the jail interior to know that what he allegedly did could not be seen by the detention officers or other inmates. The alleged incident may have been heard though by inmates. Detention Officers, for the most part, do a fine job. Do not categorize all of them. I can name several DKPD officers, rank and file, who started their career at DKSO. Now they are an asset to DKPD. One apple, thank God, does not spoil the whole bunch.

ddh,

Thank you for your reply. The AJC article and TV stories about the incident talked about Steib "visiting" the inmate, so I assumed Steib was visiting as a regular member of the public. I won't ask about what other inmates might have "heard" though! TMI

What about if the DKSO has a policy about hiring someone to be a jailer who has a criminal record?

ddh said...

That is why I left it at that because it would be TMI. LOL.
Seriously though, the policy
I assume is the same or similar to DKPD. Misdemeanors, depending on what they are, are not instant disqualifiers. Remember, technically traffic tickets are misdemeanors too. I know we have all had at least one of those prior to getting our badge.

I am still trying to figure out how someone that can be found on OJS for being arrested got the job as a jailer.

I guess the Sheriffs office has resorted to hiring persons with criminal backgrounds to watch over the criminals in the jail now?

Thanks again for the reply, ddh.

I still have to question the judgment of the DKSO in hiring Steib. This is a guy who had been arrested at least three times, and at least twice in DeKalb. We don't know what the original charge or charges were, but he was arrested for Probation Violation and Failure To Appear. So not only did he commit a crime, he failed to show up in court and also violated probation. That sounds like he was not taking the matter(s) very seriously and had no respect for the law. This is a guy who did wrong, and continued to do wrong, albeit on a minor scale. And this all happened just a few years before he was hired.

p.s. more shenanigans at the jail:

Way to go Thomas Brown!! You sure can pick 'em!

Wait, didn't Brown also hire KK Jones?? The same KK Jones who was forced to resign from Marta after he totaled a MARTA police car off while off duty AND REFUSED TO TAKE A BREATHALYZER?! Gee, if I had nothing to drink, I wouldn't have refused.
