It Didn't Even Take 24 Hours

Less than 24 hours ago we started a new feature called "Open Post" because things were kind of slow around here. How silly of us.

On the eve of another multi-jurisdiction speeding crackdown as part of the “100 Days of Summer Heat”, Assistant Police Chief Rancifer has ordered all officers currently operating laser, who were trained by any agency other than Dekalb County, stop operating laser immediately.

It appears Rancifer is under the delusion that any other police agency, including the Georgia Public Training Center in Forsyth Georgia, is simply inadequate.

Not only is this an insult to the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council who sets training standards for all police and sheriff agencies in the state of Georgia, it insults the fine departments who took the time to train some of our officers.

No matter where these officers are trained, it takes money. The money comes from the taxpayers. Now you have more taxpayer money wasted; wasted because you have fully trained officers not using their skills.

What is Rancifer’s plan, to re-train all these officers using the “DeKalb” way, costing the taxpayers even more money?

The Madness Continues

This is nothing new...applied for the Laser class a year ago and got a memo when it got denied saying Dekalb is no longer sending officers to Laser classes at other training facilities.
Rancifer wants his privlidged few to have all the fun running laser while the lowly street patrolman is looked down on from 90 and his pawns...LOL...
Anyways who approved this B.S.? I know chief O'Brien couldn't do such a thing....or could he? As the plot thickens the dept. will begin to thin again and we will hire an additional 300 officers who are perps themselves i.e. fraud girl, 32 boy, and O'bama's #1fan!! Way to make us all look bad high five Dekalb.....10 hours 4 days a week thats all you should be doing!! The Dept has become a laughing stock, no cars, no guns, no tasers, no training, no raises, no sick checks, and no RESPECT......

Tell me this is a just a joke. If anyone was going to question the quality of training from an agency the adency would be DKPD. This is insane. I'm glad I left when I did. Those that are still hanging on at DKPP..the grass is green on the otherside!

OOH, OOH, I know he is gunna train them to run laser from the helocopter I bet.
Wow this should be fun stuff, and the cost of the fuel will be offset by the revenue that will be generated by the thousands of citations written one day.
DUMB DUMD DUMB!

Rancifer "has ordered all officers currently operating laser, who were trained by any agency other than Dekalb County, stop operating laser immediately."

IMHO

That's probably because we don't have enough lasers and we don't have any batteries that still take and hold a charge.

This source of revenue and arrests has been seriously mismanaged.

It reminds me of..... "What do you mean we're out of tickets books? Didn't someone know the department was running out of blank ticket books?"

An officer trained and equipped with a laser will pay for the laser and the training in short order. Making arrests and getting drugs and guns off the street are just bonuses that impact overall crime numbers.

good, line level dont need to enforce unlawfull speed, thats what TAC is for. Line officers need to be in the neighborhoods as a burglary deterant, making good quality arrests. You could teach a 10 year old how to pull cars over and write tickets. Someday the supervisors will stop grading officers by the amount of tickets they write and stop giving take home cars to those who write the most.

Lieuteant/Sergeant - hmmm who should get officer of the month this month. Officer Jones has 25 Felony arrests but only 30 citations. But Officer Smith has 1 Felony arrest and 60 citations, great Job officer smith!!!

Such bullshit. There are officers on some watches that have been running laser every single day for over a year. They havent answered a 911 call in months, handcuffs probably rusted. They can sure write a speeding ticket though.

Lets give P.O.S.T. a call and let them know what Rancid thinks of them and their training.....:(

Do you think all the officers that are assigned to Special Operations were trained by a Dekalb Laser Class.

Nope, they were trained by other departments offering the class.
Its just a recent appointment who has come up with this new concept for the police department.

So why do we even bother to send an officer to any school at another department.

Who is our expert trainer, are they better than everyone else in the metro area ?

While I agree that line officers should be answering calls and catching 42 and 44 perps, I also think it's complete nonsense that Hot Rod won't let officers trained elsewhere (and POST-certified to boot) run laser...such kingdom-building, ego feeding nonsense.

Officers are stuck in the status quo method of operation.
Hell I cant remember the last time I have actually seen a POLICE OFFICER who catches the bad guys and not some peddley ass speeder.
Yes I know we have to enforce traffic violations still, but I would much rather have Felony J-1s as opposed to 10 citations.
But the officers have gotten away from policing these days because for one it's more dangerous, so why put your life on the line not to receive and incintive such as a raise.
2nd its just damn easier to write a ticket and go 10-8, heck you may even get someone who may suspended so there is your arrest for the day.
3rd officers arent allowed to really police these days due to society being a bunch of pansey asses and complaining when there smacked around a bit.
LETS BE HONEST PEOPLE NEED TO BE SMACKED FROM TIME TO TIME! This is the only way they understand, asking please sir dosen't get you shit these days. If you want the streets back you have to take them back, but this requires the understanding of citizens that they may very well be a withness to a perp ass beating, and if so they should say thank you officer and not oh my god did you see that!.
Until we have the true backing of the department this wont happen either, we must have a Chief Director to go before the media and say yes we did have to fight the bad guys, and yes we won too damn bad for them.
But until then we will continue to operate with the bare minimum in mind including officers on the street.
Now its time to go beat Ethel around a bit more, Rock on Chief Obrien.

The problem with you people is that you do not realize how smart Rancifer is. He is a damn genius and the sooner you morons realize this, the better for all of us. He is smarter than the people who run this blog, he is smarter than Director Miller, he is smarter than Chief O’Brien and he is smarter than CEO Ellis. The reason that SO MANY people hate Rancifer is because they are jealous of his superior intellect. He is also a fair person whose motives are always pure. His decisions are always made in the best interest of the department and it is never about him. He really doesn’t need this job but he stays only to serve this department with his superior skills and abilities. When he does retire this department will collapse within six months without his leadership.

If Rancifer says you guys are too stupid to run laser unless you have been trained by HIS Special Ops people then he must have a good reason for saying it. If he tells you it is Easter in August, just start coloring your eggs boys and don’t ask questions. Rancifer is always right, even about the Easter Bunny.

I can't see how we found a pilot helmet to fit Rancifer's swelled head and yes some people are going to say why are ya'll taking shots at each other. It is because we are tired of getting kicked around because we refuse to bow down to King Rancifer and every time he does something else stupid he will open him self up for more. he should be changed back to Lt Rancifer and send him back to the air wing our luxury Choppers need full time pilots

That must be from who in Spec Ops, with that much praise, he walks on water.

Eight peole killed in police chsase in California. Is it really worth inocent civilians getting killed for a stolen piece of machinery, a stolen car. I don't think is is an even trad. Eight dead bodies for on wrecked recovered stolen car. Just think if it was your family killed.Comply with the chase policy.

It pains me that Rancifer and Don Frank get nice salaries and benefits from my tax dollar money. They should thank their guardian angel Vernon Jones every day of their lives. How did Don Frank not receive jail time for the illegal background checks he performed on department computers?

Rancifer and Don Frank represent every thing wrong Vernon did to the department.

I don't work for Public Safety, but I have met Rancifer, O'Brien and most of the command staff, I know several by first name and others I just know by rank, and face.(I am lousy on names) O'Brien truly impressed the hell out of me, along with his staff. Rancifer strikes me as the typical fighter jock-ego type that rubs many the wrong way until you get into a fight and your saving each others ass. Unlike many in command he does make a decision, and is right 50 percent of the time, which is 50 percent more than all those in command who make no decisions at all. He gets in the trenches with his men (and women) on crappy holiday details and even takes his lumps with the guys on the street, as posted in this blog several months back.
For all his faults he is the only tactically aggressive leader on the command staff.
As to the order on laser guns, it makes no sense to me either, The damn thing is pretty much point and press. The only issues are the target environment, angle of descent on a hill, legal restrictions, and crap like that. Probably you could teach the course on-line, (y'all might want ot explore this possibiltiy) and then take your certifcation. Personally I believe speed limits are way low around DeKalb and Georgia in general, it looks like most of you guys agree because I go through speed traps all the time 10 mph above the speed limit and haven't been ticketed in the last 20 years, and y'all keep passing me with your blues off....

Don't worry we are not chasing anyone in DeKalb. So speed away and quit worrying about a ticket.

Don't expect much from Obrien. He is truly a nice guy but thats all you get. I'll eat my words if it isn't true.

Lt's please stop coming to roll call and telling us that pedestrian robberies, auto theft, business burglaries and home invasions, etc. are up, then tell us not to chase. Do you think perps know we can not and will not chase them for these offenses? So, let me me get this right, you are telling me, if a perp wants to do a crime, all they have to do is jump in a vehicle and speed away and when the police see them and they will not stop..we stop chasing??
It's sad that someone has to be killed during a police chase but someone is killed everyday that's non police related anyway.
Come on brass, put your heads together and come up with something else that will be logical to police and the public. I dont know...but coming from the top of my head... speed sticks and PIT comes to mind.

Above said, "Lt's please stop coming to roll call and telling us that pedestrian robberies, auto theft, business burglaries and home invasions, etc. are up".....

I thought ICP was supposed to have all that taken care of! Uniform's job is to answer calls, write a few tickets and hammer out reports.

Uniform is no longer a proactive part of the department. Uniform officers are simply here to chase their tails and amuse the brass.

ICP is where the real policing takes place, so bring that to their plate. Uniform is just a necessary evil, not a contributing part of the bigger picture.

If speeding is that big of a problem in Dekalb, which I highly doubt (more of a 'we need more revenue' problem), then call the Georgia State Patrol. Last time I checked, it is their job to patrol the highways. If DKPD is short manned, get the officers off of 20, 675, 85 and 285 and into the neighborhoods. Or do you guys like bringing home the cash rather than the criminals?

So, I'm curious. For perspective I'm not police but come from a police family (Dad, Mom, and Brother all officers).

But don't traffic stops often result in drug, stolen property, or warrant arrests? Not to mention public safety.

As a citizen I'd like to see a little more traffic action and pulling trained officers off the traffic assignments bothers me.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that traffic enforcement is one of the best ways to have a presence in the community, and actually find some perps. Now obviously 911 calls are likely more dire and urgent, but enforcing traffic laws has to be better than cruising a neighborhood waiting for someone to steal something.
