Open Post......

Things are kind of slow right now (we do have a couple of irons in the fire), but as sure as your first call for the watch will be either a domestic or a vehicle accident, it will change.

So go for it.

Keep it clean.

Rumors welcomed.

Tasers cometh...
Laser classes for all...
Shotgun and patrol rifle classes are actually being offered...
Maybe if we got another car or two around here life wouldn't be too bad.

Any rumors afoot about when the precinct boundaries are going to change? One would assume with North being smaller and Tucker being constantly slammed, a realignment is in order. Is the idea of a sixth precinct dead?

I use to work Tucker and it is stupid big but then they had maybe 8 on the road per shift. Dont they run like 15-18 officers per shift now and still have enough for day and evening net team as well as putting several officers on special everyday??

Take home Dodge Chargers, I tried spreading that rumor for years.

The Game Has Changed said...

15-18 per shift?

Obviously you're not working on my team. We work with less than that, half that on some days, and a number of rookies who don't cover their territories. They're 10-6 on a 10-48 from 10-41 to 10-42.

I feel bad for the citizens who live in their assigned territory and the officer covering the territory next to them. Unless they're 10-8 when a call comes out, they rarely visit their assigned area of patrol.

Yes uniform manpower is good, the next big surge will be CID. We need some good, experienced, and aggressive officers to make the switch to CID.

Well at Center Precinct we still waiting on cars after roll call. We still have all the ICP cars parked and not being used.

Before (Lt.) Rancifer leaves us the county needs to make sure he returns all property he has stored at his home..you know..GRANT STUFF...GUNS ETC.

Anonymous said...

Heard that they were forming another HIT/County wide NET team with officers from each precint....is this worth it? doesnt each precint have NET teams of their own? Where are the cars gonna come from they use? and how will people be picked for it will it be the "Chosen Ones" or will regular officers have a chance to be on the team too?

Anonymous said...

"The game has changed" I have heard about the rookie situation. But thats a LT/Sgt issue because they are letting them get a way with it. But you know they dont care because they are bringing in the "quota" to keep the Capt/Maj off their butts.

Things will never change at DKPD. Yall need to get out like a did and start a career somewhere else. These same debates and problems have been going on for 10 plus years...

The DeKalb County Police Department was constituted to serve all the citizens of DeKalb. We, like the Fire Department seem to be the only public safety agencies in the county that can’t refuse a call assigned to us (the municipalities always seem to claim its not their jurisdiction, the Sheriff’s Office always seems to be too busy to serve arrest warrants or “unqualified medically” to accept a drunk at the jail, and others are limited by their mandates). I propose DeKalb County make a few alterations so that its officers serve all the county’s citizens.
After the county straightens out the reported issues at Recorder’s Court, I suggest members of the Legislature and the B.O.C. craft legislation that would allow the Recorder’s Court to hear traffic citations, certain county ordinances (Public Intox, Disorderly Conduct, Loitering Drugs or Sex), and certain misdemeanors (Possession Less than Ounce, Shoplifting) brought before it by the DKPD regardless of whether the incident originated within an incorporated or unincorporated area of the county . This would be a win/win initiative and should not be to legally difficult since the court already handles citations for quasi-jurisdictions like MARTA or Emory.
First, the revenue question. If the incident was handled by a county officer but was within a municipality then the county would return a small percentage of any fines to the municipality. The county’s and the municipalities financial benefit from the fines would be small initially but both could see a greater long term financial benefit with more stable neighborhoods, business districts and traffic.
Second, would be the enhanced ability of DKPD to act in the most efficient manner available to handle a problem. Having DKPD baby sit an accident or a public drunk/disorderly conduct until a municipal officer arrives is counter productive. Its completely absurd to have DKPD handicapped because a drug corner sits ignored in a city pd’s jurisdiction while affecting an unincorporated area. The criminal element knows that straddling the intra-county jurisdiction boundaries provides them with sanctuaries; remove the boundaries.
Third, the citizens don’t want to see the DKPD ignore an easily solved issued just because it sits within a city. DKPD unfortunately gains a public perception of uncaring or incapable when the easily solved problem is ignored or the citizen is told to call the city pd because its not my jurisdiction. The majority of citizens neither understand nor care about intra-county police jurisdictions when they point out a problem or see an officer drive by a problem.
I believe these three steps would impact DeKalb County as a whole in a positive manner; possibly increase revenues for the county and municipalities, enhanced law and traffic enforcement activity and create an improved public perception of law enforcement.
A few addition steps that I believe would help; align and expand the county pd’s precincts to cover the entire county not just unincorporated, a unified or at least inter-department accessible police record system for the entire county (there’s no legitimate reason for investigators from different agencies to be playing phone tag in order to research their cases), the legislature to create a tiered or ranking system for law enforcement (the public has a right to know of the important and critical differences and capabilities of the different law enforcement agencies and their officers, unfortunately the public believes small agencies and their officers are as capable and as well trained as the county’s), develop policies and incentives that make the county pd’s uniform division competitive to CID or specialized units (there is simply not enough seasoned officers in the uniform division), and be committed to innovative apparel, equipment and training (in essence become leaders in police service again).

Thank you to Director Miller for coming to Tucker Day Watch roll call at 0600 hrs to thank the officers for catching two 42 perps in his subdivision. What other brass has ever done that? Little things like that is what good leadership is all about!

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Tucker,,, Y does Tucker have to send an officer to CID temporarily to help then enter guns on NCIC? She's been there for about a month. In the meantime I cant get a day off because of manpower shortages. WTF!! We had 130 calls pending during the floods, and I see an officer on the watchlist as 'special detail-CID.'

Anonymous said...

I hear that all sworn officers will get furloughed 1 day in early November. Any truth to this?

Anonymous said...

She is in CID because she is pregnant! Why didn't you just ask her?

Anonymous said...

I did ask her. She's not pregnant or on light duty. They sent her back there because when she was on light duty several months ago she was assigned there.

Wow that new Director and his staff must be like the second coming of christ. All must be great with the DKPD world now. Im so excited for everyone I could just throw up. Believe me for most of us its just more of the same BS with different morons running the place. Im just glad the past complainers must have got the promotions they wanted because they finally shut the hell up.

Anonymous said...

Why are we sending beat cars/call handlers to the Disaster Relief Center detail in East Precinct instead of ICP?

Anonymous said...

Why is Lt Kaulbach allowed to work directly for Chief Loos? Same ole Dekalb - New Start, New Biginning!

NEED INTERDICTION TEAM said...

ICP needs to be leveled down to about two officers per precinct.....there needs to be a county wide highway interdiction team formed like Gwinnett and every other smart agency...who does interdiction besides Becker and Morrison????!!!! HELLO BRASS!!! You guys want money how bout seizing some of the millions of dollars in cash and dope that drive past you on our highways every day!!!

Good things never happen said...

Interdiction Team - I was told that Higdon once proposed such a team and was shot down.

I hear that only 20 to 30 officers applied for CID for this last advertisement. This is out of a 1000 man police department. Far too many officers in uniform (including supervisors) just want to complain about what they do not have and what they are not allowed to do. But when you really get down to asking people to apply for many specialized positions like CID all you hear is excuses. Oh I just can not work those hours. I have to work my extra jobs. My wife will not let me work CID because of the hours. I just do not want to be on call. There are some really good officers and supervisors in the Uniform Division but there are also a lot of cry babies who want to talk about CID but have no interest in actually doing it. Step up to the plate and take a swing or shut to hell up!

By the way, Becker and Morrison are good at what they do because of years of hard work, training and experience. The same can be said of other specialized positions within the department. You can not just create a new unit and expect success. You actually have to know what you are doing.

Anonymous said...

I'll second that on Becker and Morrison.

Gwinnett may do more bragging, but those two get more money and dope.

You don't need to be on a special team to do interdiction. Being on an interdiction team doesn't give you magical powers. Hang out on the interstates. People lots of people over. Look for indicators. Don't be in a hurry to scribe them a 10-67 and go 10-8. Dig deep. Gather intelligence.

Chief O'Brien and Police Alliance has only asked all the faithful bloggers to contribute $50 dollars for a Gala that provides $100,000 of life insurance for your families and the faithful whiners on the blog let him down. They stood at attention when TEBO called and showed up in great numbers. Chief continue to run this Department like you have been groomed to with good sound decisions. You know who is on your team.

Is anyone assigned to keep the DKPD website updated and current? It seems that pct cmdrs names, ofc of the month, the listing of the command staff are always old and outdated. Also, did the dept give up on the monthly newsletters? This is minor stuff compared to everything else going on ,I know. But as a former ofc I like to see how the dept is doing, and where folks are now.

Anonymous said...

To the previous poster....basically the county is going to hell in a handbasket and everyone that you knew has probably retired or sought greener pastures!

Anonymous said...

How much does it take for the Dekalb Police website administrator to remove TEBO from photos in areas such as National Night Out 2008. We have already had the 2009 version of National Night Out. Why do we pay the people who control this.Either lazy or sabotage on current Chief.

Whats the gossip on the latest prom. Nobody bitching must have been a great success with the great new miller time.

Whats up with these double standards? The other night at Tucker officers used OC on a naked suspect. The suspect was able to run inside his house and lock the front door. The duty commander told the officers to go 10-8, leaving the suspect inside his home. WTF! They didnt even get warrants on the guy. Good thing he didnt die from the OC exposure. Im sure if a peasant sergeant wouldve made the decision to go 10-8 he wouldve been suspended!

Anonymous said...

That Sgt is an idiot. I'll say it to their face if you'll post their name here. Naming names is the only way this nonsense will stop.

Haven't you ever heard of "hot pursuit?" You didn't even need a search warrant to chase that perp into his house.

What the hell is going on in this department when we have supervisors telling us we can't arrest people who we have charges on and who run from us??

Anonymous said...

It wasn't the Sergeants decision, it was the duty commander's decision. The Sgt was just following orders.....even though the order sounds improper or illegal.

Anonymous said...

Who was the duty commander who decided we're girl scouts and not police?

Anonymous said...

Before any supervisor ever got involved, the officer screwed the entire thing up. He just sprayed the guy and then watched him run into his apartment. He NEVER even made an attempt to take the guy into custody. I am not taking up for the supervisors involved but unfortunately I think I know what really happened.

Anonymous said...

Where the heck did the Mooneyham post go? Yall been bought off or promised a promotion or what?

Anonymous said...

That sounds believable, given the incompetence and arrogance of so many rookies that seems to be a prerequisite to getting hired recently.

I heard about a veteran MPO getting written up because he told a rookie that he should get out of athe brand new Crown Vic he loaded up and let a veteran officer drive it.

Anonymous said...

The officer did the best he could, considering he was alone and attempting to arrest a nude suspect. For us to use force(oc) on a suspect and then go 10-8 is unbelievable. Is this Mayberry PD? Like a previous poster said, Im sure nothing will happen to the Duty Commander for his/her gross incompetence.

Ya know..the stress from inside of the DKPD is far, FAR worse than the stress from the crooks and dealing with the public.Working for a bunch of Schitzo's is a lot worse than the psycho's out side of the place...how's that for an observation? SERENITY NOW !!!!!!! ;-}

Anonymous said...

OK, from now on just take your prisoner to Grady Hospital and the Jail people will be there to pick out who is in perfect health enough to be admitted to jail ...oh wait..the DA''s office will be there too so they can pick the best candidate for a plea...THEN you can take the selected few to the jail. This new proceedure will save a lot of waisted time and effort.Someone get this on a blue order ASAP.

Think about it said...

Three die in a 41 on Hwy 78.

I wonder if SPEEDING had something to do with it?

People...its time to slow down!

Civilians and Officers (on-duty and off duty) need to consider if speeding is really worth the few minutes saved. Unless you are traveling hundreds of miles, you won't save much.

You may not get a ticket because there is little enforcement or you can flash a badge....but you just may have an accident.

Playing Russian Roulette with your life and the lives of others on the interstate isn't worth the few minutes saved.

It only takes seconds to end your life or change it for the balance.

Anonymous said...

Is it just me or has this blog become very boring since the blog authors post about everything but DKPD. We know and see whats in the news, dont need it here. Dont really give a crap about the DA's office either. The blog author is removing front page post like Mooneyham with no explanation. Dont think that would have happened in the past. Oh well just wondering what the heck is going on. Appears they are trying to make everyone think its all warm and fuzzy at DKPD which is total BS.

Any comments on what will happen to our health insurance if Obama care passes?

Any comments on our pension, like the return that was posted a couple of weeks ago?

Any comments on why we don't get updates from our pension rep's?

Didn't think so, just keep bitching about who has a drive home car etc and let the big stuff go unnoticed.

Anonymous said...

How is it that a MPO in Property Room can have a take home vehicle and be out on FMLA til December and the vehicle sits in her driveway. You would think that the Property Room personnel might need this van, unless the Sgt. of this area is aware of this. I thought when you were out on OJI or FMLA the vehicle is to be parked at the perspective area. Just wondering.

FYI, this blog sucks now that the people running it or obviously being controlled by the currrent command staff.

A response for "Think About It Said"

Understand that speed does not cause accidents. Risk-taking and more commonly distracted drivers do. Speed, if a factor, increases the severity of the outcome in an accident.

For example, our interstates are designed and modeled after the German autobahns. In rural areas, they have unrestricted speed limits. That means anyone can go as fast as they like. The difference between the Germans and us is that they are highly disciplined drivers. For the most part, they are obedient and respect the law. They pay attention and DRIVE THE CAR. They do not allow themselves to be distracted or engage in activities that cause distraction. They pay an enormous price to be licensed so they respect the priviledge.

Now, here in the United States, we have drivers on our roads, legal and not, who come from all over the place or backgrounds. And all of the bad driving habits with them. So, don't blame speed. Blame talking on cell phones, texting, eating, drinking, dancing, reading, putting on make-up, changing clothes, surfing the net on Blackberrys, checking emails, changing CD's, failing to signal, following too closely, running red lights, blocking intersections, cutting clearances too close, failing to yield, failing to stop, rubber-necking past accident scenes, Move Over Law violations, etc., etc., etc. All of these and more are the real culprits to the accidents we see. All of these contribute to the number of accidents, property damage, injuries, and deaths on our roadways more so collectively than DUI's and speed.

So "Think About It Said", how good of a driver are you? Can you honestly say that you have never engaged even once on a daily basis in any of these distractions or bad driving habits while driving? I think not. Having investigated hundreds of accidents and witnessing all of these while I patrol, or drive on and off-duty, this is the real truth. Speed does not cause accidents. It just makes accidents worse.

Having said that, the next time you see a police officer on patrol traveling, show some respect. Not only for the officer, but yourself. Obey all laws! If you think failing to obey the laws and disregarding the officer's presence is okay and legal, your playing with a venomous snake. Better watch out. We just might bite.

For my fellow officers, remember, the civilians are watching us too. Set a good example. The laws apply to us as well with some exceptions as outlined by the law.
