The department, after input from line officers has decided to replace the Baretta .9mm with the Smith & Wesson .40 caliber.
That's good news, but the Atlanta Journal Constitution and others make it sound as if we well be able to out gun the outlaws. Until the county issues all line officers with long rifles, we will always be out gunned by the thugs.
At least it's a move in the right direction.

How many of you went down to the range to try the new guns? I'm excited to upgrade to a .40 and I'm also glad they went with the Serpa holster, but the Smith??? Who of you actually had the S&W down as their top pick. Personally it was a toss between the Glock and the Springfield. According to some folks at the range and the little surveys they had us fill out,the S&W came in as the #3 pick over all. How exactly did we come to the S&W? Don't they realize the problems APD is having with their frames cracking? Why did they even bother to waste our time and the ammo to have us come down there and shoot them if they were not going to take our input seriously and decide to go with the S&W anyway? I shot it, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The trigger felt like it was gonna break and it was just very mediocre. Oh well, I guess that's why I don't make the decisions.
If you have been here at least 5 years then you know everything around here comes down to money, so there is your answer. It was cheaper!!!
Whippingboy, I agree with you. The Smith's trigger pull felt like they had sand in the assembly. Personally, I put the Springfield pistol on top.
Happy for the upgrade in caliber and I thank they for it.
I did the math and assumed there was a significant police discount -- of course I have no idea what retail is -- just seemed like pretty low price.
What others (guns and calibres) were considered?
I'm with DKPD Whippingboy....I liked the Springfield overall. Looks like politics as usual.
I put the S&W as my first choice, Springfield second, and Glock last. I hated the Glock; it had far too much kick and didn't like the grip.
Every person I spoke to had the S&W and Springfield in some variation of one and two.
I'm thrilled with the choice!
My thoughts on the process as quoted in US Marshals....
Sam Gerard: "You got a backup weapon?"
John Royce: "I've never had the need."
Sam Gerard: "Get one. Keep that in your suit unless I tell you to take it out. Get yourself a glock and lose that nickle plated sissy pistol."
What happen to hi-point? kel-tec? lorcen?....how come DKPD didnt accept their bids?!! I am outraged!!!!
The bids are public record. It certainly didn't come down to the bid price. The bids included offers to trade the current Beretta pistols even up for both S&W and Glock pistols. So DKPD had their choice to trade their current pistols for new pistols at zero cost and had their choice of either S&W or Glock. Can't make out from the bid summary what the Springfield offer was. Personally I think the best choice would have been to go with the new Glock 21sf in .45acp like Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and most recently Fulton Co PD are carrying.
get the facts correct, APD had trouble with the Tactical 40 that they carried for a few years. Currently they carry the M&P 40 that beat out the Glocks in testing. It is basically a S&W version of a glock. The APD test was done by their rangemaster who is very highly respected by the officers and recieved no pressure on the test decision. Would not have mattered because he would have made his choice known anyway.
I "retired" from DKPD after 9 years hahah.... Went to a city in Gwinnett to police. Most departments in Gwinnett carry Glock 21's (.45 cal). We also all have long guns mounted in our cars. Dekalb has always been a joke and will continue to be so.
does anybody know if we are going with blackhawk or safariland want to know so I can get ready to buy my own light bearing holster cause I know the county want buy it for us
A quick search of the net on the Smith .40, I found the chat boards had good things to say about the pistol.
Not my first choice, but I'm glad to see the scuttlebutt on shooting sites is all favorable.
Ready for the rollout!
According to Chief Loos, we're going to the Blackhawk Serpa Level III holster; I've heard good things about it.
I know I'm a bit late on this thread, but the AJC article mentioned something I've been curious about for a while.
I've often heard media accounts about criminals armed with AK-47s, M-16s, Uzis, and other NFA (ie Full Auto) weapons.
On the other hand, the NRA maintains that almost no NFA weapons are used in crimes. Given that I've never read a media story about something I'm personally familiar with and not see a factual error, and that I've seen news stories that obviously get firearm details wrong, I've been inclined to trust the NRA. Of course it's quite possible that the NRA is referring to legally registered pre 1980-something NFA weapons that citizens can legally obtain vs wholly illegal weapons carried by criminals.
I'm curious about the opinion of officer in the field. Do you guys run into bad guys with actual machine guns?
I have been on the street for 23 years. Not a chie'f aide, not CID, TSU, Training or anywhere else. I have worked South, North and Tucker. Haven't seen one yet in the hands of a bad guy.
I to am a line officer and the only time I have seen one is when a retard gets drunk on new years eve and forgets their fireworks
I work for a Sheriff's Office in South GA in a county of 100k. We are issued the M&P in .45, an M-4 with red dot optics, a Remington 12ga, and a tac vest with rifle plates, every patrol deputy and detective has this.
Its insane that in such a violent county you guys arent given long rifles.
