The commission proposes layoffs to meet budget shortfall. Even with the more than expected early retirements, the county is short 8.7 million dollars.
Would you expect any less? When Burrell took office nearly two years ago, he said he would trim the fat including selling the 5 worthless magic buses purchased under Terrell Bolton's regime for 2.5 million dollars.
Yet today, three (3) of the buses are sitting at fleet maintenance on Memorial Drive at Rays Road, rotting away. North precinct wrecked one and now it's being repaired costing the taxpayers untold amounts of money. The 5th one is sitting at Center Precinct.
Looks like Burrell "misspoke" or as some call it, lied.

Heck they don't even have the backbone to let us spend our "furlough day" with our families or working a part time. They find it easier to just short our paychecks than to explain why there are few cops on the street.

I was really trying to get 30 in before I left, But with just a year left to go; it was time to go! I took the Magic Bus right on out of here. I've seen this County change 10 fold with worthless management and politicians and just can't take it anymore. Why do the people of DeKalb continue to vote for trash in the positions? Well, I guess you can say payback is HELL!
We always complained about Levitan, but she was far superior to the last several terms and KNUCKLEHEADS!!!

When times are tough, layoffs is the dreaded term heard all too often around this place. But the important question is - Who should you lay off? How should you lay off employees? When should you lay off your workers? These are all questions that need to be addressed in order to determine how to handle layoffs with the most success.
The first step to knowing how to handle lay offs is to determine if layoffs are really necessary. In the short term, laying off employees might seem like the way to go, but we need to consider long term effects. Will DeKalb County be able to handle the work load without the additional employees? Do the employees you are laying off have valuable skills that you will have to outsource for a much higher fee than you would be paying if kept the workers on? I think we already know the answer to these question.
We are already understaffed as it is. Calls are always pending, response time is increasing and morale is falling lower and lower everyday.
However, as much as we want to freak out and assume that we are going to be the ones being asked to pack our shit up and hit the road, let's be a little more realistic. Out of all of the jobs in DeKalb County, public safety is not at risk here people. The commissioners (as retarded as they can be sometimes) know that the last thing they want to do is lay off public safety. So don't fear my comrades...we are going to Pleasure Town!

The first one that needs to be on the layoff list is the PIO Sheila Edwards. That is a waste of money and after the embarrassing conduct on video. Why is she still here.
Everyone says she is very hateful person to deal with. She thinks she is CEO II. Will this county ever change to the days of non-politics in the police department.
Appointed positions always lead to wrong type of loyalty.
I lived in the county nearly all my life till I left 10 years ago. I do not enjoy the commute but my new county made sound choices, furloughed and laid off employees a year and a half ago, and is still making cutbacks as the revenue continues to fall. I haven't been happy with all the choices, but you have to cutback somewhere and service is part of the package. I commend my commissioners for not wasting time and making tough and sometimes slightly unpopular decisions; they have led instead of ruling through indecision.
I agree with Ron Burgandy; uniformed cops will not be laid off. You might lose some admin staff and clerks but that will be about it.
As the judges have decided that court functions are the most important part of county government the cuts will have to come from the rest of the county services.
The GSU study is a non-starter with the commissioners and CEO, so DeKalb will keep its top-heavy and inefficient management and gut the poor guys providing the services.
The county will choose to can 3 service employees rather than fire one manager that would provide the equivalent savings with no loss of services to the citizens. Its the county way, cut back on essential services so that the citizens will beg for the county to raise taxes to get the services back.
