14 days before our next holiday (Labor Day, how appropriate, should be "Free Labor Day") that we are being forced to work for no pay, we learn Burrell Ellis has given his former assistant, Shelia Edwards, $45,980.00 to keep quiet.
You remember Shelia. She's the one Burrell Ellis gave a $13,000.00 dollar per year raise just before she resigned for making a complete and total fool out of herself and Burrell. Like he needs any help.
Why $45,980.00 you ask? Good question. If it had been $50,000.00 dollars or more, the full board of commissioners would have to approve it by vote. This way Burrell can take care of his buddy and no one can do anything about it.
Where did Burrell find the money to give his staff up to a 34% raise? Where did he find hush money to pay off Shelia Edwards?
But he, and the other commissioners can't find the money to pay us for the holidays we are being forced to work.
The madness continues.

And the citizens still don't give a damn..... $$$$$$ down the drain.
That $45,000 is enough to cover the holiday pay cut for an entire precinct!
Not only does this heifer get a $13,000 a year raise when she's making a fool of herself and the county, but she "voluntarily" quits and gets 4 months severance pay/hush money?? No one, and I mean NO ONE, in the private sector would get a deal like that unless they were the CEO of some Fortune 500 company!!
The next time you write a warning ticket, make sure you tell the person to call the CEO's office and tell him what a crappy job he's doing and that officers deserve better!
If she voluntarily resigned why pay her hush money?
Dekalb seems to have plenty of money to throw around on short notice.....
Ellis and the BOC don't seem to have any trouble finding money when they want to spend it on themselves, their VIP's and their pet projects.
And they wonder why PD is issuing a boatload of WARNINGS!
Keep it up...eventually they'll have to scream uncle.
Let me get this straight...
If I turn in my resignation tomorrow to go work for Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Doraville etc... the county's gonna cut me a check for 4 months of pay.
Damn...I wonder how many officers left without collecting their severance check.
Did the county also cut her a check for her unused vacation and sick time?
Well our mission will continue, if we dont get a raise and get laid off, atleast it will be at my own hands.
FU Ellis.
CEO Burrell Ellis continues to amaze me with his extremely poor decision making and “crash and burn” leadership. I cannot believe he would increase my property taxes to finance a private developer over making sure our police and firemen are paid.
What was he thinking?
The fact that his law firm was due to make millions on the deal did not make things any better. CEO Burrell Ellis “back door” negotiation style must stop. CEO Ellis must stop giving his special interest group money and severance packages (Shelia Edwards) they do not deserve.
I know our CEO looks at this blog because he would be more of a fool if he didn’t. I want to say to him, “Please stop embarrassing this county and making us look so bad!”
U know maybe I should be a perp just like the CEO
Severance is generally for downsizing or layoffs...not when people resign. Good Lord!
So all appointed people who resigned on their own are now getting four months salary. What a deal for the taxpayers.
Never thought I would say this, "we were better off with vermin". Atleast we got our raises and holidays then.
Wow nice real nice, keep up the warnings you have the blessing from your supervisors.
I know one damn thing, if im the supervisor on duty the next time one of county commisoners are stopped.
I will do my best to put your asses in jail, especially if your a fruad suspect like Ms. Sutton!
And then while on the scene I will notify the media to come and take your friendly photo while sitting in the back seat handcuffed.
Guys this is sad. The main reason we keep getting SCREWED Is most if not all of you live outside of DeKalb County, this means you have no vote, no say so, or voice . I know I just pissed most of you off but think about it. You have no nickel in this quarter and the BOC knows that. The one thing we can hope for is that the CEO’s job is abolished and we get a county manager that might be our last hope. And for those of you live outside DeKalb County, make about 100 friends that vote and let them know what’s going on, that is how we can make real change. Trust me I’m on your side. You can insult m, kick me, and beat me down. The fact is you live here weather you want to admit it or not. When most of you get off you high tail it to an extra job for 5 or 6 hours or longer after you get off. You spend a lot of time here guys so at least get a voice and be heard. The real fact is actions speak louder than words. Let’s all be safe.
It's almost been a year since I left this crumhole of a county, where the H is my severance pay???
Severance Pay to an employee who quits????????? I have never heard of such a thing!!!! I believe the website has it correct; Ellis is taking care of his friend. No other explanation!!!!!!!! Taxpayers should be demanding retraction of the offer to pay anything other than what the personnel code calls for; pay for the balance of accumulated annual leave..... This is ludicrous......
Can we say the CEO will be the next Bill Campbell. I thought Dekalb politicans would learn after what happen to Sid Dorsey.
Can someone who studied hard for the Sgt's test tell us if there is a county policy about hush money for employees who quit? I can't imagine this is allowed.
I'm wondering if Ellis just taking care of his friend, or he is taking care of himself? What does she know and what can she say?
Look just be damn glad you have a job, hell at my precinct Chief O'Brien was handing out free football tickets for the LSU game.
Now they were given to the county courtesy of Chic Fila, im sure this will boost morale.
Hell boys thats better than a merit increase, or holiday pay.
Now me and one frined of my choosing can go watch a game thanks to Chic Fila.
I think im back to writting tickets now, so long boys your own your own with the ticket slow down im back in action, full throttle, and wide open. Watch out your traffic violaters im coming to get ya!!!
Oh yea and I heard the Chief also said that the 12 hour shift was being postponed until after the 1st of the year, I wonder what the logistical problems could be.
Maybe no cars to sit our asses in, or the mere fact that the majority want to be left alone and dont want a 12 hour shift.
Hell what'a I care im going to a game.
Tickets...what tickets? LSU tickets?..... like long copy tickets issued outside 41's, I haven't seen any LSU tickets.
To answer Anonymous August 26, 2010 2:12 AM's question...
"Can someone who studied hard for the Sgt's test tell us if there is a county policy about hush money for employees who quit?" ......
I didn't see anything in the manual about severance outside being paid for unused sick/vacation days accrued.
If I'm not mistaken, the max was 60 days...... but what do I know... I'm not "made" and don't expect to be one who will benefit from the process of dropping questions because they "statistically favor one group or just because".
I feel sorry for the Chief, he just following the directions of Ellis and Miller. He has no true leadership. As long as the current state of leadership is in place we will die.
Wow tickets. Then you look at the people in place to lead us. We have a majors who drinks the KOOL-AID everyday. They are appointed to the position , let it lay. They have to be secure in their positions.
Maybe while your enjoying the game you can look up to the private boxes and see your ceo sitting with the GM plant developers. Maybe then he will see you and offer you hush money. Chief O'Brien give it up everyone knows that you have to be a puppet to the Great Wiz and his master. Guys keep up your pressure and keep the media in the loop when these crooks pull something. It is so sad that we have to turn our backs to the greatest criminals that this county has.
